  1. You should definitely explore the city while you're there! The museums are great. I loved walking around the city and then going to a museum for the afternoon to escape the cold. I second that pizza place too!
  2. When I first began nursing, I felt extremely stressed at the end of the day. I found that exercising when I get home really helps me wind down. I run a LOT and then do yoga for about half and hour. I am a lacto vegetarian (transitioning to vegan). I am grateful that I am able to be up and moving throughout the day unlike some of my friends who are sitting at a desk all day.
  3. Yeah, I had the same thing happen to me a few weeks back. I can't remember any of the specifics, but it took the pt. several hours before their (foley) output was "normal".
  4. I loved peds! Try not to dread it; just like everything else, it gets easier and more relaxing as you go.
  5. As a woman who has seen several relatives die of breast cancer, I am thrilled with this new development in technology. I think this should be limited to true "problem" genes, like a certain type of cancer or adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD); this shouldn't be used for hair color, IQ, etc. This is an amazing advancement!
  6. Where I work, I am not always working with kids. When I do, I have a lot of trouble focusing on the task at hand. Recently, I have not been able to insert a single one of the children's IVs. Usually I get nervous and flustered with the crying/screaming/antics and I just can't concentrate on what I am trying to do. Any advice?
  7. Maybe some of you have heard about the coal plant that broke down and released heavy metals and orificenic into two rivers in Tennessee. These rivers supply drinking water to many areas in Tennessee. Most likely, the effects of this event will occur many years later, but I was wondering if anyone has treated people who have been affected by the fly ash or sludge in the water (or air?). Do you think the people who live nearby area are at risk of acquiring health problems?
  8. Ha! Poor guy...I'll bet he was humiliated. Yeah, the mother who diagnosed her kid online is the best. I always allow myself a chuckle over them.
  9. With the elderly, I just try to remember that it may be heartbreaking, but it is the natural cycle of life that must take place. And I comfort myself by thinking of how long they have lived and the happy experiences they have had.
  10. That was such a good message. I probably don't mind working today as much as others because I am Jewish, and I know my pts. and their families are grateful for all of us too. Today was nice because everyone was joyful and cheery.
  11. I'm definitely wearing gloves a little more often than I already do.
  12. Yesterday, I was distributing meds, and I knocked on the next pt.'s door (16 yr. old male). There was no reply. So I knocked a second time, louder, and waited a few moments. I decided that the pt. must be asleep, so I opened the door and went in, and he lying in his bed masturbating. I was momentarily stunned, but I left quickly. I have never encountered this before... How do you handle the situation professionally?
  13. Yeah, the one time I had a catheter (10 years ago) I remember that I felt like I had to go all the time. It was terrible. Now, I just tell the pts. to expect the feeling.
  14. Oh, the irony. I went out of town to visit some relatives. While I was there, I had to take my 13 yr. old cousin to the ER for an emergency appendectomy. She thought she was having menstrual cramps for the first time, and she didn't tell anyone because it "got better" aka her appendix ruptured. At least I'm not out of practice with appy pts.!
  15. I became an RN at 22, but I always admired my older classmates who seemed calmer and wiser. Any age is a great time to become a nurse! I don't think it is any more of an accomplishment either way.
