question from saunders book
ok so i was reviewing about the addisons and cushings from saunders book, took some notes about the signs and symptoms. Cushings: hypokalemia, hypocalcemia, etc etc... After that, i did a 10-item quiz and encountered a question from the cd about s/s of cushings syndrome. W/c of the ff lab findings would the nurse expect to note in this client with cushings syndrome: a. glucose 110 b. potassium 5.5 c. wbc 6000 d. platelet 200,000. So everything looked normal to me except for option B. But i was like "no, it cant be! in the book it says, patients with cushings syndrome has hypokalemia!" But as i went throught the rationale, it says that: The client with Cushing's syndrome experiences HYPERKALEMIA, hyperglycemia, an elevated WBC count, and an elevated plasma cortisol and ACTH levels. These abnormalities are due the effects of excess glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids in the body. SO which one is right?? the saunders book that says clients with cushing has hypokalemia or the saunders cd that says they have hyperkalemia??

Does anyone know how to answer Pharm ?'s, when u have no clue????
Its easy for other people to say to just learn the med suffix and you'll go just fine. ive encountered a lot of meds in nclex which has the MOST UNUSUAL suffix. I understand that what the asker may want to know is that if you encounter a really strange med, what will you do to select the correct answer. i had to agree with "callioter" and "nmaracle". They are very REALISTIC. Make a guess, pick an answer, forget about it or at least dont let it make you feel down, then go on with the next answer. =)

Helpless and Alone
i feel you. I, too, feel so alone since no one in my family understands me. they think im a moron for not passing the nclex the first time. im planning to take it again and i study in my room most of the times. i lock my door because whenever they see me studying they just say "you might fail again" and then they will laugh. Im really gona study hard this time because the first thing ill do when i pass this exam is to move out. I feel so alone in this house cuz nobody supports me. Hang in there, we can make it. =)

So...I failed the RN NCLEX....AGAIN!!!!
yeah, it really doesnt prove 100% if you'll be a good nurse in the future. It cannot be realistic when we say that it proves how competent you are as a nurse 100%. NO. And my teacher would always say that "nclex is different from the real world." when youre answering the nclex, you think differently than what you see/do in real life. I know a lot of good student nurses, may it be written or clinical, who perform well in school and hospital, and they are the same persons who failed the nclex rn. while this other person who passed the nclex the first try, didnt study at all and almost fail nursing school. He admitted that he didnt evenn read most of the questions, and he laughed so hard when he found out that he passed because he cant believe it. Nclex is really unpredictable. Those who studied so hard and those who didnt study can both pass or fail!! We may think ts unfair but we should not stick our thinking to that. I think we should just do our role as test-takers. Study hard. If we fail, study again, Because passing nclex is the only way to being a RN. Well, dont be discouraged, i know its hard, but like what they say, "if you fall 7 times, stand up 8."

Confused with question from Saunders
I picked the same answer. Im confused as well. I didnt pick option# 1 because it says "theres no need to be concerned." Of course there is a NEED to be concerned, the child is immunocompromised in the first place. option#2 "bring the child in the clinic for vaccine" And like what you all said, I THOUGHT THE BOOK SAYS VARICELLA IS A LIVE VACCINE so immunocompromised children should not receive this. option#3- "keep the child out of school for 2 week period" - I picked this answer, its the safest!! option#4- "monitor child for elevated temp and call clinic if tis happens" - I didnt pick this one because you should not let the immunocompromised child to just be exposed to a classmate diagnosed with chickenpox and do nothing but wait and just take actions when the child already has a fever ad the disease has been transmitted. SO I WAS REALLY SURPRISED WHEN THE RIGHT ANSWER TURNED OUT TO BE OPTION# 2.

Humiliation and embarassment after NCLEX failure
oh well..i was wondering about the same thing. i have friends who didnt even review, and still passed, without even memorizing the normal laboratory values! One friend of mine just guessed the entire exam and laughed so hard when he found out that he passed. He called it LUCK. LOL. Im on the same boat as you are, failed the first time while my friends passed the first time. And yeah, i feel so ashamed of myself. I really hope you pass next time. God bless you and all of us here. :)

For all test takers: My long NCLEX-RN story
had the same nclex experience....had 265 questions, never took breaks, guessed answers on the last numbers because having answered a lot of questions, i got so tired of thinking, went home thinking that i failed, prepared to tell everyone that i failed, and after 2 weeks a letter came and has FAILED on it. Oh well, we may have the same experience, but I was one of the unlucky ones. COngrautlations! =)

265 Questions?
jsome, yeah, ive been in your situation, i was checking the brn website every single day for 10 days. After 10 days, my name's still not there. After 2 weeks, i received a big white envelope that said FAILED. well jsome, they said that in california it takes 3-10 days for the candidates name to appear on BRN website. So there's still hope for you. :) We all really hope that you pass. :) 2 days ago, a friend of mine passed the nclex-rn on her first try and told me "i never thought that the nclex-rn is that easy!!." I was like "WHOAAAA??!" Lol. She was lucky enough to get the questions she was familiar with. And im happy for her. Im planning to retake the exam maybe like 2 months from now.

265 Questions?
Btw, when did you take your exam? :)

only really intelligent people pass NCLEX RN the firs time?
Is it only the really intelligent people who has exceptionally high I.Q. who pass NCLEX-RN the first time? Because I have friends who admire those who passed the first try and doubt the intellectual abilities of those who passed the 2nd try (or more). (..btw,i think the alien icon is cute.. LOL:heartbeat)

265 Questions?
ive read from most members who did all 265 questions that they got a lot of "prioritization and meds, 1 SATA, no computation, and the last questions were easier." And from my personal experience, i got the exact same questions! and i also answered 265 Q's. was it just a coincidence? or maybe they give some random test takers the same set of questions?
-
First time, NCLEX-RN, 265 questions, FAILED
i also did all 265 Q's...and i think we had the "EXACT"! same questions!! was it just a coincidence?
-
265 questions..can i pass?
i failed my first try with 265 questions. but dont worry you dont have to assume that you failed too. a lot of members here passed with maximum questions, who knows you might be one of them. maximum wait for your name to appear on brn website is 3-10 days. keep your head up.

lots of pharm questions
to all those who had a lot of drug questions on their nclex-rn and passed, were the drugs unfamiliar and what did you do to answer it right? did you guys guessed? :bluecry1:i just need to vent because my friend who passed nclex the 4th time was kinda like telling me that i should have not guessed that i should have answered each drug question using critical thinking. but ive never heard of those drugs before..and the nclex question just ask for the side effect of a particular drug and no other clue is included in the question, just the drug itself.

Failed 3rd time
dont lose hope..my cousin took the nclex 5 times. she had no regrets because she's been a RN now for 4 years and counting. you can do it. dont give up!

ive had a lot of med questions on my first try. i think thats what made me fail. i havent even encountered all those meds during my review. now im taking my 2nd try and im worried that i might get a lot of med questions again. but at least i reviewed more meds now than before. anyone out there who had lots of med questions on their first try and stil had a lot on their 2nd or 3rd try? On my firt try i felt:crying2: like taking the exam of a LVN because of all those meds..ive had all 265 Q's and almost half of it are med questions.
