Hi, How are you doing in school? Are you able to apply things clinically? Are you a good test taker? I think these are just as important. I took the HESI exit last year in April, studied for two days (about 6 hours each day) and took the test. I do not think more studying would have personally helped me. The questions are not straightforward, there are things embedded in the questions to pick up on. The HESI cd was horrible for me, it was much harder than the actual exam. Good luck to you, you are on the right track, I did take a Kaplan review course which helped me with overall test strategies and did tons of nclex review questions. The rationales for the nclex answers helped me a lot. You can do it. I got an 1150 on the HESI exit what do you all have to get to pass? Avery

Wow, First, I think you need to surround yourself with positive people. I have never had anyone who told me I couldn't do something but rather they helped push me on my journey! When I started nursing school, my boys were 1 and 5. My husband runs a large corporation and my parents lived eight hours away. I graduated four years later, with my BSN, was president of my school's nursing student association, had four years of diverse experience in er, icu, nicu, and cvicu. I graduated Magna Cum Laude. So my answer would be yes, if you are determined, you can do anything! Btw, I am in grad school now to become a NP. I will graduate in 2009. Avery

How about using the ROME rules? Resp is opposite Metabolic is equal This applies to the arrows and whether they go the same way or opposite ways in regards to pH AND Co2. It cannot be compensated if the pH is not normal, it can be compensating. Hope this makes sense. Avery

We had no time to prepare for HESI either but we all did great. You could spend this negative energy into something positive and study for HESI. You will pass. Avery

Nursing school is truly something to enjoy in the moment. It is an experience and every moment of it will make you a better nurse. Get a NCLEX book and look through the questions in each section that parallel with what you are currently studying. The goal at the end is to pass NCLEX; it is never too early to start. You will meet some great friends for life who will understand you better than anyone! Have fun and work hard; it will pay off. Avery

Hi, I am thinking of looking into PRN hospice jobs and just wanted to know what to expect. Does any know of reputable hospice companies to work for in or near Dallas? Is it difficult to get hired by hospice? I currently work in Cardiac ICU and much of what I do is deal with end of life issues and withdraw of life support. I feel based on my experience of dealing with the issues, with patients and their families, hospice would be a great fit for me. Any ideas/places are welcomed. Avery

I think this varies by hospital. The CCU I work in is an ICU. We always get the patients who have an MI who need to come to the ICU. We also have lot of swans and balloon pumps. On the other hand, lots of people are fixed in the cath lab and so we also have a lot of resp failure, shock and even some trauma overflow. Avery

Is nursing something that appeals to you? If so, I think you could do any pre-reqs you have left and then take an accelerate BSN course. Avery

Pleural effusion or inflammation of the pleural sac that was more like a friction rub is what I am thinking.

I work in a very busy, fast paced CCU. We put in all of our own orders and answer the phones and certainly do not have anyone watching our monitors! Avery

Hi, I just started school last week to become a NP. I was wondering how you chose what speciality to go into? Am I more marketable if I do the FNP route or does this depend on location? How can I find out what the demand is in my area as most NP jobs are not listed in the paper? I currently work in a level one trauma center in a very high skilled CCU. We do lots of transplants, balloon pumps, swans, and also get trauma and other various ICU overflow. I was thinking of doing acute care adult but wonder if it will be hard to find a job with this speciality? Anyone with any helpful hints or advice is appreciated. Avery

Yes, we have the green little sponge things. It is still possible to do mouth care. We have this chlorohexadine rinse we do once per shift to prevent vent acquired pneumonia and then every two hours use the stuff that comes in the kit with the green sponges. Are the nurses not doing mouth care? What state are you in? Avery
