DFW area: Am I being low balled?
Hi, I'm a nurse with 3 years experience in telemetry/PCU. I got a job offer yesterday in Ft. Worth TX. I moved here recently and don't know what to expect as far as pay for this area or for a nurse with 3 years experience since we all know salary talk is forbidden lol. I was offered a base pay of $24.48/ hour ; that's for a 3 year experience nurse rate according to them. This seems quite low to me since that was my starting rate 3 years ago else where, in a small city actually. This would mean going way down in pay from what I had. However, this is for a weekend only position and so weekend differential will make up for the difference but I feel that I should be making more from the base pay point of this. What do you all think? Preferably people in the DFW area? Is this fair or not. One of my friends said she has 1.5 years experience in dallas and was offered base pay of 26/hr. I have double her experience. Should I try to negotiate for more? This position is for medsurg oncology... Thanks in advance! !

Is it ok to ask for some time to decide whether i'l take the job offer??
Well, I'm done with the interview and they offered me the position on the spot! She told me I had until the end of the day to decide but at the end said well you have a week, I'm guessing since I didn't jump on it?? It may not be my preferred department to work in but I was impressed by the pay and the offer for a day position. I think I'm going to take it. My interview scheduled for the 13th of this month is in pedi ER, I'm afraid as a new grad someone else with experience will blow me out of the water and I'l be left with nothing. If I were to get hired at any of the other interviews I would be taking a $5 difference and working nights...I think my best bet would be to take this offer while I can, Thabks everyone!!!

Is it ok to ask for some time to decide whether i'l take the job offer??
Hello everyone, I recently moved to this city and have been looking for a job for a couple of months now. I recently landed a few interviews : The one I am MOST interested in is in 2 weeks however the rest are scheduled from tomorrow on out. My question is, if I were to get a job offer from another unit or hospital (which are second on my preference list ) before that interview is it ok to ask for sometime to make that decision? If so how much time should I ask for? I don't want to risk them thinking I am not interested but I would hate to accept the offer (If and when I do get one) and then find out I could have worked at the place that was first on my preferred places to work. Let me know! Thanks:redbeathe

So frustrated with IV starts!!
Those snap release ones is all i know lol. What works for me is the first thing you must do when you first open up the needle slide the catheter slightly up and then put it right back (these are know to kinda get stuck and not finding that out till your ready to advance sucks! so just slide it up and back down so you know its ready) I enter the vein but not all the way. The moment I get a blood flash I advance LITTLE bit more with my needle, then with your index finger advance the catheter using that little ridge that sits at the top advance it all the way THEN push your button to safe your needle, do not push it till your catheter is off. This method has worked for me and I was taught this way for best results. ESPECIALLY the part about advancing the catheter with your index finger, good luck!!

...best jobs while in nursing school.
Nurse Intern! most hospitals have the position, most require you to be done with first year of nursing school, at my hospital i get to make my own schedule at anytime 24hrs a day...they know your a student, you practice what you learn and work on your rn competencies while you work. It is by far the best nursing student job ever, basically get paid to be a student when your not doing clinicals for school. I am allowed to do everything except meds, i can pull them prepare them but not hand it to them, nurse will do that while you learned the whole process right before its inserted into their body.

Tips for Mother/Baby interview
I havent graduated yet however I had an interview for mother and baby unit for a nurse intern position, they pretty much interviewed me in the same fashion as they do to a new RN position because they said once you intern they give you a spot on the unit upon graduation. Heres some of the questions i was asked: *Why do you want to work on this unit? *Are you willing to start off in post pardum before going into L&D or NICU? *What is your ultimate goal in nursing? *What is your experience with breastfeeding? Do you support breastfeeding? ( i have no kids so i told them i had no personal experience but i also let them know what i knew about breastfeeding such as the benefits) *Do you have an issue with teaching breastfeeding? * What if a mother does not want to breastfeed, what do you do? *what if mom wants to breastfeed but daddy/family does not want her to? *What would you do if you had a coworker who constantly picked at your work even when you did well? I was hired even though the position was not even available, im happy to be there and cant wait to graduate. Hope this helps! Good luck!

Oh come on people shes just asking for some articles! Here are a couple, feel free to look for more on http://www.nursingcenter.com, she will need to use sites such as web md and her pathophysiology textbooks from class to give her the disease description and basic info like that, she also will need to use her nursing diagnosis books to do that part, im sure she knows this. hope this helps! heres one on a study: http://www.nursingcenter.com/library/JournalArticle.asp?Article_ID=661639 http://www.nursingcenter.com/library/JournalArticle.asp?Article_ID=759505 http://www.nursingcenter.com/library/JournalArticle.asp?Article_ID=536343

how much time did you study a day in nursing school?
I agree with everyone, but as for me is study constantly, keep in mind there are lots of group projects so aside from school hours and clinicals you have to make time that is in agreement with everyone else, working full time is out of the question, no way no how! there is no way, atleast not in my program that you can work, part time is even pushing it. i study atleast 4 hrs a day and i know people in my program study more than i do, i take it easy on fridays after clinicals but thats mostly because im nauseated from lack of sleep. Another thing is if you shoot for C's your likely to get f's..most people shoot for b's at the least and are often disappointed because theyre struggling to pass an exam, nursing school is tough!! and time consuming, you have to learn to take their test, their not like the tests prereq's throw at you. Good luck! get a loan and work part time...you will be able to pay it back with a nursing salary sooner than you think

low GPA..trying to be hopeful
hang in there, i know people who have gotten in to the program who were worst than that, look for schools with large classes, I go to Texas Tech Univ. they took 150+ students for their program..look into it

Waitlist Position number
Im not sure what your case will be but i was accepted into a nursing program and waitlisted in another, there were 15 of us on the aitlist and they were calling me repeatedly to offer me the spot, in the program i got into they had plenty of spots because life happens, people dont end up taking the spot and those same people get accepted to other schools, Good Luck!!!

RN- associates or bachelors degree?
you can definitely become an registered nurse by way of an associates degree, its the minumum requirement for becoming an R.N. Getting a BSN in nursing may be more appealing to employers and you can also move into administration and case managent with a bsn, im a BSN nursing student right now and most of the nurses that are my preceptors are r.n ( a.s degree nurses).
