You have it made! M-F only!! I would do 12 hour shifts, 3 in a row M-T-Th or T-W-F, or M-T-W, then you can have 4 days off. Don't choose 8 hour shifts nor 10 hour shifts.

I agree with nurse Beth. I just wanted to add that if you do change your mind on the PRN position, you can always go through an agency, that way you are not required to meet the minimum requirements a hospital may require.

To be quite honest, and I mean this in the most non prejudice way. I believe that many of these young people have a warped sense of entitlement. They feel entitled to be accepted, to feel how they want to feel, to think how they want to think, without being rejected. Kids have been bullied forever. African kids are bullied ALL the time!!! I went to school (in the early 2000s) in a very rough neighborhood, with Blacks and Latinos. I personally knew people who brought weapons to school or hid their weapons outside the school on a daily basis. I've seen kids get jumped and bullied. I've seen kids get jumped and urinate on themselves with the whole crowd laughing at them, and still came to school the next day. This was a reality for many of my friends in similar communities. No matter how many times we (referring to people at my school) were bullied, rejected, or outcasted, no one EVER said they wanted to bring a weapon to school to hurt anyone. Maybe we need to start examining what's going on within this specific demographic - young white males - and why they hold this attitude of: if I am sad, depressed, rejected, or bullied, I am ENTITLED to kill others, in order for them to feel my pain. IDEA: Implementing metal detectors would be a great start...just my opinion, in addition to violence prevention strategies, like they do in inner city schools. Hi JMarie327 - how has Duke's program been for you? I was thinking of applying to the WHNP program.

If this is the case, what are other options? How would they make their program unique? Maybe offering job placement for cna's who complete their program? I'm asking because I'm trying to do the same in my state of Maryland and it is also a saturated market.

I agree. Try the VA!! I got an offer there as a new grad.

It's time to move. Come to the dc/maryland/northern virginia area. Jobs are plentiful. MedStar hospitals are pretty good and you will be able to climb the ladder without discrimination.

Hello Everyone, Getting my BSN was THEEEE BEST decision I made in my professional career. It has opened up so many doors. I finished my BSN in August 2014. My public health contract position ended in October 2014 and I took a month vacation. I sat for my NCLEX in December 2014 and passed! I took the first offer on a medsurg floor in January 2015 and have been at the same hospital ever since. I just recently transferred to Labor and Delivery, after a year in medsurg. I have maintained a consulting-part-time job in public health and after that ended, I picked up a part-time job giving flu shots at corporate sites. Nursing has opened sooo many doors for me, especially since my main goal was to combine my public health and nursing degrees. It was a struggle finding jobs in public health. I would apply for 50 jobs and get maybe 4 call backs. Now I'm more careful in applying for jobs because more than likely, I will get a call back. :) For all my fellow MPH'ers, just go ahead and go to nursing school. So many people discouraged me - family and friends told me - "don't do it...why not get another masters or phd...why do you want to start your career again at 28.. another bachelors is like going backwards." If I had listened to them, I would still be struggling with my direction in life.

I got offered a position in January 2015. I was supposed to start in February, but my endorsement license just took wayyyyy to long. SMH. I am now starting on April 27 in medsurg.

Hi @healtheducatorinCA I got my MPH in 2010 and just completed my BSN in August 2014. Good choice in choosing nursing. It will open many doors for you in the long run. Don't stop, keep going. Because you have substantial experience in public health and it seems like you have experience in case management you can finesse your skills in a way to work in a non hospital setting after you become a RN. If you want to get some clinical skills now, try finding a patient tech position. Once you graduate, you can work part time as a nurse (Top 5 places a new grad can find a job (that's not in a hospital) | Scrubs – The Leading Lifestyle Nursing Magazine Featuring Inspirational and Informational Nursing Articles) while pursuing your MPH or if you choose another non-clinical masters program. I worked a full-time job in a public health role at a health department while attending nursing school full-time (night classes & weekend clinicals), so yes, it can be done!! So many people warned me against it, but if you know what you are capable of, just keep pushing!! I have been offered a med/surg new nurse position at a hospital in the city. I am contemplating declining the offer and seeking out a community health nursing position, because in the long run, that is what I want to do. I love all things public health, mainly maternal and child health. In fact, my maternity and community health clinical rotation are the ONLY clinicals that I looked forward to.
