shift preference? and pigeon-holed new grad?
You have it made! M-F only!! I would do 12 hour shifts, 3 in a row M-T-Th or T-W-F, or M-T-W, then you can have 4 days off. Don't choose 8 hour shifts nor 10 hour shifts.

School Shootings
To be quite honest, and I mean this in the most non prejudice way. I believe that many of these young people have a warped sense of entitlement. They feel entitled to be accepted, to feel how they want to feel, to think how they want to think, without being rejected. Kids have been bullied forever. African kids are bullied ALL the time!!! I went to school (in the early 2000s) in a very rough neighborhood, with Blacks and Latinos. I personally knew people who brought weapons to school or hid their weapons outside the school on a daily basis. I've seen kids get jumped and bullied. I've seen kids get jumped and urinate on themselves with the whole crowd laughing at them, and still came to school the next day. This was a reality for many of my friends in similar communities. No matter how many times we (referring to people at my school) were bullied, rejected, or outcasted, no one EVER said they wanted to bring a weapon to school to hurt anyone. Maybe we need to start examining what's going on within this specific demographic - young white males - and why they hold this attitude of: if I am sad, depressed, rejected, or bullied, I am ENTITLED to kill others, in order for them to feel my pain. IDEA: Implementing metal detectors would be a great start...just my opinion, in addition to violence prevention strategies, like they do in inner city schools. Trouble getting a job in a "Good Ole Boy Town"
It's time to move. Come to the dc/maryland/northern virginia area. Jobs are plentiful. MedStar hospitals are pretty good and you will be able to climb the ladder without discrimination.

New RN, looking ahead; MPH?
Hello Everyone, Getting my BSN was THEEEE BEST decision I made in my professional career. It has opened up so many doors. I finished my BSN in August 2014. My public health contract position ended in October 2014 and I took a month vacation. I sat for my NCLEX in December 2014 and passed! I took the first offer on a medsurg floor in January 2015 and have been at the same hospital ever since. I just recently transferred to Labor and Delivery, after a year in medsurg. I have maintained a consulting-part-time job in public health and after that ended, I picked up a part-time job giving flu shots at corporate sites. Nursing has opened sooo many doors for me, especially since my main goal was to combine my public health and nursing degrees. It was a struggle finding jobs in public health. I would apply for 50 jobs and get maybe 4 call backs. Now I'm more careful in applying for jobs because more than likely, I will get a call back. :) For all my fellow MPH'ers, just go ahead and go to nursing school. So many people discouraged me - family and friends told me - "don't do it...why not get another masters or phd...why do you want to start your career again at 28.. another bachelors is like going backwards." If I had listened to them, I would still be struggling with my direction in life.

New RN, looking ahead; MPH?
Hi @healtheducatorinCA I got my MPH in 2010 and just completed my BSN in August 2014. Good choice in choosing nursing. It will open many doors for you in the long run. Don't stop, keep going. Because you have substantial experience in public health and it seems like you have experience in case management you can finesse your skills in a way to work in a non hospital setting after you become a RN. If you want to get some clinical skills now, try finding a patient tech position. Once you graduate, you can work part time as a nurse (Top 5 places a new grad can find a job (that's not in a hospital) | Scrubs – The Leading Lifestyle Nursing Magazine Featuring Inspirational and Informational Nursing Articles) while pursuing your MPH or if you choose another non-clinical masters program. I worked a full-time job in a public health role at a health department while attending nursing school full-time (night classes & weekend clinicals), so yes, it can be done!! So many people warned me against it, but if you know what you are capable of, just keep pushing!! I have been offered a med/surg new nurse position at a hospital in the city. I am contemplating declining the offer and seeking out a community health nursing position, because in the long run, that is what I want to do. I love all things public health, mainly maternal and child health. In fact, my maternity and community health clinical rotation are the ONLY clinicals that I looked forward to. I had women in my cohort who were 45+. They are all RN's now. Keep going!! It will all pay off. Trust me. :) Best of luck if all that you do...send me a message if you want to talk more.

New RN, looking ahead; MPH?
I was reading her other posts. I don't think she has done hospital bed side. I have met a Nurse of 30 years who has worked at the health department for 29 of those 30 years. She said she has no interest in bedside and hospitals. She has done international, mission trips, but mainly community health/health department projects, worked in implementing several federal health grants.

New RN, looking ahead; MPH?
Thank you for that...very inspiring. I would like to do something very similar. Once you finished nursing school, did you ever do bedside in a hospital setting, or did you go straight into the position at the health department?

Pursue MPH or finish ADN ??? help!!!!
I encourage you to continue you degree in nursing. It will open so many more doors for you combined with your Healthcare Management Degree. I graduated with my BS in bio in 2008...and my mph in 2010. I battled with my decision for so long. Starting the pre-nursing courses in 2010 and then stopped. Sometimes feeling like I was going backwards. But I have spoken to many clinicians and doctorate (MD, PHD, RN, CNL clinical nursing leaders) holders with 15+ years of experience and none have discouraged me from doing nursing. They said it is an incredible addition to my MPH and will open more doors. You are considered more resourceful. Someone even told me that...if you think about it, the MPH degree was originally created for clinicians who needed greater knowledge of public health. I am currently in a 2 year 2nd degree bsn program. I started in 2012. I had a friend's friend beat me out of a program coordinator position for teen mom's ONLY because she had her RN/MPH and I had my MPH, even though, I had more experience than her. In a way it's kind of political, but understandable. I say just focus on your nursing degree. Get the MPH while you are working as a nurse (they have 1yr programs for clinicians). If you want public health experience, while you are in nursing school, volunteer doing public health work...they have plenty. I have no plans on remaining bedside after a yr or 2. I want to combine my mph with my bsn and develop health programs. Public Health is my first love...my passion, but I know nursing will give me the leverage to get into the international health and adolescent reproductive health field. Hope this helps :)

New RN, looking ahead; MPH?
Hey All! This is a question for everyone :) I have an MPH (undergrad in Biology), have been working in the field since I graduated in 2010. But have this burning desire to get an ASN or BSN. My thing is, I love the field of maternal/child health and adolescent health. I seem myself doing program development, health education, maybe some international working, and I am working on developing my own program. Anyway, my question is BSN or ASN? Then or ASN-BSN? What would you do, and why??

Morgan State BSN Program
Hello. i contacted morgan state as well...the big guy who answers the phone - YES HE IS VERY RUDE - over the phone and in person. I was able to speak to another lady, and she informed me that because they are a new nursing program, their accredidation is contingent on the first graduating class from the nursing program. She said there 1st class will graduate in May 2011, and then they will be accredited.
