Can I be a Nurse?
I dont think hep B would be a problem. Most people are Vaccinated against it these days, and needle sticks have other things to worry about. If people with HIV can practice, im sure you can too :)

I-CVT vs RN?
Here you go..everyone that was interested.. I think this may be my new major next semester :) I-CVT... The invasive Cardiovascular Technologist is a medical professional who is highly skilled and trained in the applied science of invasive cardiovascular technology with experience in all aspects of diagnostic and interventional cardiovascular procedures and who has demonstrated proficiency and knowledge through a credentialing examination. Academic training in the science of invasive cardiovascular technology includes: a bachelor of science degree, an associate of science degree from a two year course of study, or a certification of completion awarded from a hospital, trade or technical cardiovascular educational program. All of which have been accredited by the Commission on the Accreditation of Allied Health Educational Programs (CAAHEP) or an equivalently accredited allied health or science degree with practical experience. Confirmation of educational preparation, knowledge, and competence is evidenced by the achievement of professional credentials in invasive technology. The invasive Cardiovascular Technologist position generally requires working in a Cardiac Cath Lab or Special Procedures Lab. The Cardiac Cath Lab provides professional cardiovascular care to the patient undergoing cardiac evaluation, diagnosis and treatment for cardiovascular disease known or suspected or for cardiac anomalies. In this setting, the procedures require either puncture or incision of an artery or vein which is used to thread a thin catheter that will traverse the vessel and position itself in the heart. This position requires high levels of understanding of cardiovascular anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, radiation, physics and safety, as well as radiological imaging and positioning. Accuracy in waveform and hemodynamic analysis and measurement, preparing and administering medications, acquiring a viable image and proper sterile procedure are all prerequisites for a person in this position. The credential awarded to the invasive cardiovascular technologist, upon completion of the invasive registry examination is Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS).

Come On!!
I never knew there was an ANA until I read it on these boards. Why arent nurses just part of the AMA?
-
Nurses caps!
What do graduating male nurses get? We just don't get any show headgear?
-
Nurses Tooooo!
As someone on this board said (and this is my fav quote these days) "all those classes in between bed-pan changing classes are just there to take up time." Nurses don't know anything but how to change bedtimes, give little cups of pills, and fluff pillows.. remember?!

Why a Philadelphia hospital gave in to a racist demand?
So I guess im the only one that didnt see it as racist. There might be other reasons behind it. If I had a patient and I walked in and the man said "I dont want a gay male nurse" I would think "ok, I can see where this guy is comming from.." and I would accept it as making him uncomfortable, not as him being particularly rude toward me. Make your patient comfortable!!

Medical Mistakes on the Oprah Show
I started watching it.. but it made me so mad.. that story about the girl that thought she had cancer, and had all that surgery only to find out she didnt have it. I guess Im part of the "thankful" group.. Id be more thankful that I had never had cancer, and had all that surgery, than worrying about sueing the doctor/hospital for it.

Need some advice on quitting school
That is a hard question... Is there anything else you can do to keep your bills down? Maybe you could just withdrawl from a few courses, and goto work more, but change school to part-time.
-
How Rude!!!
Thats basically what my family told me.. sadly "I cant believe your going to goto college with your grades and your brains just to be a nurse." Its sad.. but alot of people think very lowly of RNs.

The "menthol" nursing school trick
I know some here have recommended putting Vicks vapor rub under your nose if you have trouble handling the smell when your working with.. less than clean things.. anyways.. I found something today thats less noticable.. and its easy to carry around.. They now have ChapStick brand Vicks Vapor Action Chapstick.. I used it today, and boy its great.. Just letting you guys know if anyone was in clinicals and wanted to try it out.. its better than having it on your upper lip all day :chuckle

I-CVT vs RN?
Got a few questions answered today, they said that brochures would be put out soon to watch for that. Anyways.. really all I found out was that its an associate of applied science degree. Its a "mix" of different titles put together to make a new field, and put some relief on other areas. They I-CVT work in cath labs, cardio offices, rehab, and can also work in labs. Duties can vary from education about excerise to working in the OR and cath lab. Salary in this area is about 19 an hour starting vs 21 an hour starting for nursing (average). Ill fill you in when the pamplets come out.

I-CVT vs RN?
I am taking pre-reqs.. but I will be finished with ALL the non-nursing courses when fall 2004 rolls around.. and I cant move around Nursing courses because they fall in order, so ill be making up class. CVT can be moved around though, so I could take a few at the same time. Just trying to save myself some time.

I-CVT vs RN?
Today, for some odd reason, I picked up my college handbook and started thumbing thru it and looking at other majors.. maybe one that I could get done faster than nursing, since I now have recieved a "maybe" for fall 2004, which means Id be a 2006 grad. Well anyways.. it seems that my school offers an I-CVT program (Invasive Cardiovascular Technogist). Im pretty sure I could get into the program this spring and be done with it fairly fast I know its not nursing, but honestly you guys don't seem to be happy with the long hours, crappy pay, etc.. and it doesnt seem worth it. I was looking on salary.com.. does anyone know which title ICVT is under?? Its not perfusionist but it CANT be Invasive Cardiologist. Im just wondering what the pay rate is..b/c Im considering changing majors now :imbar Thanks for the help ~L

CCU the same as ICU
The hospital here has a CCU (Critical Care Unit). The only reason they call it that is b/c the hospital doesnt have specialized ICU depts, so the CCU is just a combo for all ICU.

Teacher and Student Intimate Relationship: Is it ok?
I think he has spoken to the Dean already about us. Since we are both pretty out about it (We have lunch together at the Cafe in the school), its pretty wide known about us. I think they will try to get me in a different class. Its just POSSIBLE that I might get one of his.

Teacher and Student Intimate Relationship: Is it ok?
Well I will have to say that it depends on the situation. If they were dating before that, its not really fair. Im dating a guy right now that teaches a class that I will (more than likely) have later on in school. If that happens what am I supposed to do? I cant not take the class, and it would be pre-mature to end the relationship just b/c of that. I dunno.. I think it matters on both people. If I got into a class, and had that teacher, and then mid-semester he asked me out.. Id have to say no, favouritism?

How do you wake up in the am
my "backup" alarm clock is my cell phone. If my alarm doesnt go off (power etc) it rings at the times set. Of course on weekends its crap to have it start blaring at 7am
-
How do you wake up in the am
I trick myself since I know in the morning I wont be paying attention.. first.. set your alarm clock +20mins. So when you set it to wake up at 5am, it will really be 4:40am. Next, always set it way before time to get up, that way you wake up, hit snooze, and then it seems like you got sleep in Works for me anyways..

spooky spooky spooky
Not a nursing ghost story but this happened to me and it scared the crap out of me.. i worked at malco, and theres a malco ghost. bobby said a construction worked died while building it. i was in theatre 11 i think.. it was me and this girl that worked there. the theatre was closed and we were doing the final clean up and making sure no one was left.. we walked in, and the lights wouldnt come on.. so i said.. well we will have to clean it up without lights then.. so we start walking around cleaning up.. and the projector comes on.. and its on the movie screen with little patches and things like its playing an old film.. its gray and the patches are in it, and the sounds crackling.. then it goes off and the lights in the theatre come on!! Well.. we both ran out of there faster than anything you would believe. Bobby (the manager) told us that he had been in there a few times and had the same thing happen. Id also been in there a few times and you could see something bright near the projector in the room. Anyways, he still has trouble getting people to clean theatre 11 lol.
