High amounts of flatulence in Psych
I have worked nights on and inpatient Psych. ward for 3 years. Mostly Psychitzo effective. I have noticed a large amount of these people have extreme amounts of gas (flatulence). Now I'm not saying that I hear or smell an occasional fat. I'm saying the whole room is gassed up and travels out into the unit from over half the rooms. I have worked in Hospitals before and I know the smells from medsurge. I have never experience this type of horrible gas smells in any other field. This population has (to me) an extreme flatulence problem. Now, please take my post in the most serious way. This is so obvious to me that I've been even trying to find information about it on the internet. All I can find is information about gut bacteria and the gut microbiome. I did read that Psych meds only work on the brain but most of our mental health actually comes from the gut. Has this been researched? Does anyone have a personal experience or something to add to this? I would really like for this to be researched. I think there is something to this.

Bipolar and going into nursing
Some of the most passionate people who have created great things were bipolar. You just need to learn how to react to it when you know it is coming. Think of it as a flare up. My mother is bipolar and she is awesome. When she is manic she is so creative and can do things that take most people 3 times as long. I know how it feels, I am not bipolar but I know what depression feels like because I have really bad PMS some times and I will "Rage" on my husband 1 day a month and we had "the talk" prior to that day so there are reasonable expectations. I think it is the same thing with your situation. You train yourself to recognize "Triggers" and how you will react. That's smart. As for "legalities," you could be considered as "compromised" to some organizations. You may not get a job that requires high security clearance. There are a few jobs out there that if you have high debt, addicted to hookers, gambling or maybe bipolar, you might not qualify for high security clearance job. Do you really care tho? Another possibility is that it is considered as a pre-existing condition on insurance. Another possibility is if you were called into a wrongful death lawsuit or if some really bad stuff went down... they might have you on the stand and throw it up in your face and a detective might look at you as a suspect or something.... "just making up a far fetched worst case scenario"

Does anyone know if health care reform going to affect rn salaries?

Drug seeking or real pain? How do you tell?
Since I believe that people own their own bodies and it is not my job to play God of morality, if a client says they are in pain... Then they are in pain! Obviously, if someone is already under the influence then that is a game changer but if a person is AOX3 and states that they are in pain then I take them at their word.

"No self- respecting nurse"
If a Doctor told me I was a glorified waitress, I would tell him that if that was true, then he was nothing more than an ATM for hookers.

Alcoholism: disease or choice?
Addiction is a human condition and some are susceptible and some are not. Every addict has a choice drug and wither it is legal or illegal does not matter. Yes, it is a choice just like being skinny is a choice... but how many of you can fit into size four jeans?

Private healthcare does it best (C-span)
If I was you I would have went to the low cost clinics to help with the bills. I have been to both and with an appointment its around an hour wait. Because it's Govt run the receptionist are not friendly, they herd you through like a cow and if it can't be treated with a pill then your basically in trouble because anything more is another matter. But I did it a few times just to save money. If you without an appointment you have to show up an hour before they open and get in line with the other walk in sick 7am or so. You may get in by noon.

I think this is horrible! But your watching this with belief or "Faith" that the other option is better. Instead of scrapping what we have shouldn't we fix it so the school teacher with Leukemia can not be dropped by her insurance company? Truth is under Universal healthcare she will have coverage but could die on a waiting list with many others who would not have gotten dropped. This is not Japan or Switz. they don't have 10s of millions of obese people with metabolic syndrome bogging down the system.

Obama's health plan takes shape
Looks like we will be getting that 25% VAT (value added tax) sooner than we thought. Every time a commodity moves it will be taxed. The problem is that Countries that have a VAT don't have the IRS. Also, they do not have 30% of their country with or close to Metabolic Syndrome aka Obese. We will be crushed by this. We are not the Skinny Swiss or the super healthy Japanese. We will need at least a 25% VAT just to touch this. Nurses will also take an estimated 25% pay cut as well. (You do the math) Here is an example of what universal health care would be like if it was the restaurant business.

Good argument for why private health care does it best.

ATI Comprehensive NCLEX test?
I took this test while in school and it said a had a 96% chance of passing the first time. I took the NCLEX and I passed on the first time. All I did after graduating was use the Saunders CD for 2wks before the test.
-
How are you using Saunders
I gave the book away and used the CD only. I just picked a category and took all the questions. After you answer the question you read the rational. Thats all there is to it. If you did this with all the questions there is not way you could fail test if you graduated a good nursing program.

Contaminated Scrubs..do you wear scrubs to the stores
people do not trust that nurses have common sense and knowledge of infection control? when did this start? i always have two sets of uniforms (since i'm moving from paramedic to nurse i'll say scrubs soon). the idea of wearing scrubs is if someone pukes or bleeds on your scrubs/ uniform, you do not ruin your street clothes. you just go change into your spare scrubs. i will be wearing solid toe white shoes so if blood, urine or whatever falls on my shoes i can wipe them clean with disinfectant. so the true question should be... why does america not trust that we do not know what we are doing? i always wash my hands after patient care, i never hold dirty linens against my body. if i were to stop off at the store after the only thing that would come in contact with anything would be my hands (which have been washed!) either america does not understand that we know what we are doing or the board of nursing is handing out licenses to sub-standard nurses.
