High amounts of flatulence in Psych
I have worked nights on and inpatient Psych. ward for 3 years. Mostly Psychitzo effective. I have noticed a large amount of these people have extreme amounts of gas (flatulence). Now I'm not saying that I hear or smell an occasional fat. I'm saying the whole room is gassed up and travels out into the unit from over half the rooms. I have worked in Hospitals before and I know the smells from medsurge. I have never experience this type of horrible gas smells in any other field. This population has (to me) an extreme flatulence problem. Now, please take my post in the most serious way. This is so obvious to me that I've been even trying to find information about it on the internet. All I can find is information about gut bacteria and the gut microbiome. I did read that Psych meds only work on the brain but most of our mental health actually comes from the gut. Has this been researched? Does anyone have a personal experience or something to add to this? I would really like for this to be researched. I think there is something to this.

Bipolar and going into nursing
Some of the most passionate people who have created great things were bipolar. You just need to learn how to react to it when you know it is coming. Think of it as a flare up. My mother is bipolar and she is awesome. When she is manic she is so creative and can do things that take most people 3 times as long. I know how it feels, I am not bipolar but I know what depression feels like because I have really bad PMS some times and I will "Rage" on my husband 1 day a month and we had "the talk" prior to that day so there are reasonable expectations. I think it is the same thing with your situation. You train yourself to recognize "Triggers" and how you will react. That's smart. As for "legalities," you could be considered as "compromised" to some organizations. You may not get a job that requires high security clearance. There are a few jobs out there that if you have high debt, addicted to hookers, gambling or maybe bipolar, you might not qualify for high security clearance job. Do you really care tho? Another possibility is that it is considered as a pre-existing condition on insurance. Another possibility is if you were called into a wrongful death lawsuit or if some really bad stuff went down... they might have you on the stand and throw it up in your face and a detective might look at you as a suspect or something.... "just making up a far fetched worst case scenario"

Does anyone know if health care reform going to affect rn salaries?

Drug seeking or real pain? How do you tell?
Since I believe that people own their own bodies and it is not my job to play God of morality, if a client says they are in pain... Then they are in pain! Obviously, if someone is already under the influence then that is a game changer but if a person is AOX3 and states that they are in pain then I take them at their word.

"No self- respecting nurse"
If a Doctor told me I was a glorified waitress, I would tell him that if that was true, then he was nothing more than an ATM for hookers.

Alcoholism: disease or choice?
Addiction is a human condition and some are susceptible and some are not. Every addict has a choice drug and wither it is legal or illegal does not matter. Yes, it is a choice just like being skinny is a choice... but how many of you can fit into size four jeans?

Private healthcare does it best (C-span)
If I was you I would have went to the low cost clinics to help with the bills. I have been to both and with an appointment its around an hour wait. Because it's Govt run the receptionist are not friendly, they herd you through like a cow and if it can't be treated with a pill then your basically in trouble because anything more is another matter. But I did it a few times just to save money. If you without an appointment you have to show up an hour before they open and get in line with the other walk in sick 7am or so. You may get in by noon.

I think this is horrible! But your watching this with belief or "Faith" that the other option is better. Instead of scrapping what we have shouldn't we fix it so the school teacher with Leukemia can not be dropped by her insurance company? Truth is under Universal healthcare she will have coverage but could die on a waiting list with many others who would not have gotten dropped. This is not Japan or Switz. they don't have 10s of millions of obese people with metabolic syndrome bogging down the system.

Obama's health plan takes shape
Looks like we will be getting that 25% VAT (value added tax) sooner than we thought. Every time a commodity moves it will be taxed. The problem is that Countries that have a VAT don't have the IRS. Also, they do not have 30% of their country with or close to Metabolic Syndrome aka Obese. We will be crushed by this. We are not the Skinny Swiss or the super healthy Japanese. We will need at least a 25% VAT just to touch this. Nurses will also take an estimated 25% pay cut as well. (You do the math) Here is an example of what universal health care would be like if it was the restaurant business.

Good argument for why private health care does it best.

ATI Comprehensive NCLEX test?
I took this test while in school and it said a had a 96% chance of passing the first time. I took the NCLEX and I passed on the first time. All I did after graduating was use the Saunders CD for 2wks before the test.
-
How are you using Saunders
I gave the book away and used the CD only. I just picked a category and took all the questions. After you answer the question you read the rational. Thats all there is to it. If you did this with all the questions there is not way you could fail test if you graduated a good nursing program.

Contaminated Scrubs..do you wear scrubs to the stores
people do not trust that nurses have common sense and knowledge of infection control? when did this start? i always have two sets of uniforms (since i'm moving from paramedic to nurse i'll say scrubs soon). the idea of wearing scrubs is if someone pukes or bleeds on your scrubs/ uniform, you do not ruin your street clothes. you just go change into your spare scrubs. i will be wearing solid toe white shoes so if blood, urine or whatever falls on my shoes i can wipe them clean with disinfectant. so the true question should be... why does america not trust that we do not know what we are doing? i always wash my hands after patient care, i never hold dirty linens against my body. if i were to stop off at the store after the only thing that would come in contact with anything would be my hands (which have been washed!) either america does not understand that we know what we are doing or the board of nursing is handing out licenses to sub-standard nurses.

Nursing Care Plan
yes, they are a pain in the rear. When I was in the LVN program I always wondered why there was not a class on nursing care plans and labs. I guess because you get a little bit with each system. I'll tell you what is cool, get the care plan flash cards or borrow someones. Wow, we had a girl who took hers to every clinical and she actually did very well. Care plans are real snoozers but they are the foundation of your care.

Warning - excelsior students
few years back book companies were scamming people. she would have started when this problem was ramped. they have a huge "scam alert" on their site (at least they did) many people have been dupped by this. while in the lvn program i was told many times that kaiser in ca. will not hire excelsior grads. (just repeating what many nurses told me) your sharing your personal experience and your in alot of pain. watching someone you love go through this must be difficult. excelsior has helped many lpn/paramedics reach their goal of becoming an rn. those who succeed spent alot of time researching what they were getting into and had ample of clinical experience prior to starting. i was in that program and dropped it because i didn't feel like i had the support structure i needed. many people do not need that and do well with this program. i have finished my lvn program and i feel good about a rn program now. joining excelsior is like being given a new rope.... you can either lasso your dreams or hang yourself.

Jobless in California
Oh yeah, jwf00 one more thing to add to the recipe: 1cup of 10% unemployment 1cup of many private LVN schools pumping out many LVNs lately 1cup of thousands of foreign LVN nurses competing for jobs add 1cup of Baby boomers that got a HUGE haircut on their retirement when the stocks dropped. Those nurses have either not retired hoping to wait out the recession or went back to work. and like someone else said... it's not so much that nurses can't get jobs as much as they are being forced to take the less desirable jobs. * :smilecoffeeIlovecof Can you say graveyard shift... bleh

Online Schooling
correct me if i'm wrong but www.excelsior.edu is not online except for a forum you can go into that is just for chatting with other students. it is or atleast was a correspondence program that is not accepted in many states. i started in as a paramedic to rn bridge and didn't feel comforable with it so i went to everest college for a year and i am now waiting for my test results and i feel like i can do an online program now. i'm looking at isu now.

Jobless in California
I believe many factors all put together have caused this. I see it as a recipe 1cup of 10% unemployment 1cup of many private LVN schools pumping out many LVNs lately 1cup of thousands of foreign LVN nurses competing for jobs Not just one thing is the cause but I believe you add all this together you have problems. If you want a job you need to stay competitive because I can asure you that the nurses coming here from socialist countries are working hard to get the job and are serious players. The day of entitlement is over. California is a world market. If you want a job you need to go that extra mile. Get those certs, learn a second language, show good attendance and keep a high GPA.

Salary in San Jose
yup... I am aware. I'm not in Kansas anymore!

Salary in San Jose
I went to school in LA and not in SJ and I noticed that there are more working from over seas than are from here. I guess the day of entitlement is over. I should be "lucky" to get a job in my own country. Its a world market now. My husband is going through the same thing as me. He finally got a managers job because a woman from India wouldn't drop her rate any lower. LOL, isn't that something. And my husband led troops in war (6 year vet) and blearily got his job.

Salary in San Jose
I am a new nurse and will be working for the first time in SJ. I am a little worried about finding a job. I worked as a Paramedic for years but as a new nurse I'm hoping I can find a job. I'm just curious.... I don't want to sound disrespectful to Nurses who come to the USA to work as a Nurse but is one of the reasons there is a problem getting a job is because of all the nurses leaving socialist countries to work here? I noticed in clinical that about 80% of the nurses at a nursing home was at was like that. Anyone have any kind of info on that? I had to ask the nurse to please speak English so I could understand what she was saying because she was speaking Tagalog to my classmates. I guess that's why it's in my head.

LPN to RN bridge programs in Augusta, GA
Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but I had a college network representative visit with me here in California and all they have to offer in respect to LPN/LVN to RN is Excelsior and Indiana State. Both are online and Excelsior is not recognized in many states. Oh and "The College Network" is not actually a college.
