The IPN finally took my license
So actually, after I looked trough all the paperwork the IPN has kicked me out twice for paperwork even though they said they never would. I was in the middle of moving and hadn't forwarded my mail yet and the new contract went to the Port Office. When I didn't turn in the contact I never got I was kicked out. When I told them about this they were unmoved. The IPN has been a rash on my entire nursing career, just because I asked for help for depression after working in the Burn Center. They change the rules, they want me,at 51 with health issues to work in a hospital setting. I can only work part time, they aren't hiring part time. It was a catch 22. This is a heart breaking end to my nursing career,I could go through the board and get into "guess what" the IPN again whcih "works so well" for me. No thanks. I'm having a pity party I know and I'm sure nursing will survive without me and this post will probably be removed. Maybe I'll go into sustenace gardening, farming, anything where the back biting, back stabbing and all around nastyness that is nursing anymore isn't around. Adieu!

The IPN finally took my license
Since I got very depressed in 1987 following a severe health issue( I had just finished working 8 years in charge of a Burn Center) I was reported to the IPN for depression. I jumped through all of their hoops, sat in groups of addicts who mainly talked about how to beat the urine screens and showed up nodding off from pills. I went to the doctors they wanted me to see,I was cleared and cleared again. I did have some issues from work mainly because the IPN would only let me work in hospitals and hospitals are only hiring for their hardest to staff units like Bone Marrow Transplant. I also broke my back and have a fusion and an immune problem and would get ill after working in these units. I couldn't physically do it. Mentally I was on top,I know my stuff,I have worked in critical care all my career but it doesn't seem to matter. Basically in the IPN I couldn't take a job I could succeed in and because I wasn't succeeding they kicked me out. Now my license will be suspended. I'm sorry for the whiny self indulgent nature of this post but I feel like I wasted my life now. The IPN screwed me royally and I don't know what I'm going to do with the rest of my life.

new grad options
Hi,in my opinion no it's not. Just on a regular floor it's difficult enough to learn the priority setting and organizational skills while learning massive amounts of new information with increasing amounts of responsibility. In critical care just double that. It also depends on your experience too,if you've been a tech in a critical care area and you are fairly familiar with their pt's and responsibilities it might go smoother but I think it is best to start in a more basic area. I'm sure there will be many other opinions on this. Good luck!

Contaminated Scrubs..do you wear scrubs to the stores
Doctors.residents, medical students are immune to all germs do ya know? I love when they go into the isolation rooms, use their own stethoscope while leaning over the pt,their tie is laying on the pt and their coat is touching the bed. So they put their now contaminated stethoscope around their neck maybe wash their hands and walk out of the room and say when you ask them about PPE that they "didn't really touch the pt". :angryfire:banghead: Then they go into the fresh post op's room check out the incision and wonder why a few days later that the incision is now purulent.

Swine flu raises fear of pandemic - Adults and Children
The flu deaths in Mexico raise fears of global pandemic. This is a new flu virus that is not covered by the flu shot of this year and could take months to develop a vaccine for. This is very frightening. Mexico has shut down their museums, schools, libraries and theatres. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/30386163/

Orientee's now being counted as staff!!
Also maybe a note to risk management as this is hugely dangerous for the pts, they might want to know about how many lawsuits to anticipate. Sorry I know that's not very helpful but it really makes me angry what they're doing now. They keep precious few nurses on staff and threaten them with whatever if someone speaks up. It's "turn and burn" nursing still. That and they continue to perpetrate the myth of nursing shortage to keep new nurses coming out so they just figure they'll hire someone else who will do it when the nurses there resign. It's very discouraging, something is going to happen on par with what happened to the banks to straighten this out. There are people still raking in a lot of money(not the shareholders) and they're trying to sqeeze out every last bit before they're caught. As for the OP,if you feel you have to take an assignment you feel is unsafe fill out an incident report and see if the others who are placed in this situation do it too. Try not to be the only one doing something as that makes you a target. All the best :redpinkhe It will get better.

Advice from RNs to a senior nursing student, please
You sound just like I did in nursing school,my hands shook so much when I was trying to insert a foley in a woman I that it was impossible for me to get it in (LOL?) but my instructor was very understanding,in a stage whisper she just said "relax, you're doing fine". I also looked very young,I was 22 and looked 18 or so. I had experience as a CNA and started work on a busy surgical floor where once the staff there knew I could pull my own weight, they supported and helped me.That helped give me confidence because I was just sure that I didn't know anything. I also lost 40 pounds in nursing school,it was/is rough. You sound like a very conscientious and caring person we need you. Welcome!!

Every Nurse Should Give Birth
Yeah,I started to say I'd give birth if it was to kittens but then I had a disturbing flash as to who the father would be.

Every Nurse Should Give Birth
I'm sorry that your cousin is going through this Vito, pain control is not very well handled in health care these days(a large understatement) being that if you actually complain of pain and ask for drugs by name that "you must be a drug seeker",which is of course Bull****. My 84 year old mother can complain of bursitis in her shoulder and get 100 Vicodin, what's up with that? I broke my back in '94 and have had no significant pain from that until recently where it is beginning to impact my life negatively. I am in almost constant pain but no one will prescribe anything for me and I have gotten tired of fighting for it. I even had a NP say that" um...but your blood pressure is OK" meaning that if I was in true pain it would be higher. When I initially broke my back and was in so much pain I was screaming my b/p was only 130/98. I had positive CT for kidney stones on top of that and she was still wondering IF I was in actual pain. Needless to say I'm changing doctors. Please ask your cousin to change doctors and find one who treats his pain appropriately and compassionately, they are out there. I am going to be looking too. I know it's little consolation that your cousin has lots of company though.

Dangerous nurse?
I think you did fine too, learn from it,any intervention would have just prolonged the inevitable, seeing the overall picture and stating that to the physician comes from experience and confidence. It wouldn't have changed the outcome but might have eased your mind that you and the physician are on the same page. If I have a deteriorating pt and the doctor doesn't seem to be responding the symptoms the way they are usually treated I say something like "you know she's deteriorated overall from this morning, etc, etc. They usually say something like "I know....she's dying and there's not much we can do,try these few things and see how she responds but we'll probably end up putting her on palliative care when her family comes in" That way you know the "game plan" and aren't overly hard on yourself like you're being now. You did fine,it's hard I know. Thanks for caring, that is a sign of a good and caring nurse.:redpinkhe

Message to all nurses....sincere thanks and my point of view
I guess what I bring to this is that I know everyone feels that way about their loved ones and had I been there I would've showed you where the ice machine was and empowered you. My problem is when I have a patient crashing, actively dying and someone who wants ice chips stops me dead to tell me that their loved one isn't getting adequate care while I'm running to call anesthesia, get the crash care, get D50 to push so someone who is in a hypoglycemic shock doesn't get brain damage. When I go home that night after successfully getting that critical pt to ICU and hopefully help save their life what I'm going to remember and get in trouble for is that I didn't get someone's ice chips fast enough and they complained. That is why a lot of people are unhappy in their jobs are negative etc. Even as a visitor people need to learn priorities. This is why there is a triage system always, even on the floors, the sickest pt gets our attention not the loudest. Just another point of view.

Jobs W least amount of needles and blood.
Accounting... sorry, needles and blood are part of the job, there are some types of nursing where there are fewer injections and such but all of them do at least in the entry level. Your sister would have to demonstrate competency with giving injections and being around gross situations before getting to those jobs. Actually giving injections and such is not that bad and no one especially looks forward to that part at first but you get used to it and do what you have to and are supported by peers, nursing instructors and staff. Tell her good luck,we need her.

Okay, so my mom.......
phew! That's good it's not a clot.

Possible Pedo patient and underage visitor
Call risk management,if this is in fact an abuse situation and at the very least it is very inappropriate the hospital needs to be much more active in finding out what is going on espeically in view of the difference in age and the pts HIV status.

Okay, so my mom.......
an arterial clot can cause that,if that's the case they would need to do surgery. Hopefully it's not. Try not to worry until you find out for sure what's going on. [[[Hugs]]]

Advice on revocation
Hi Brittany,I can sympathize but you have to work with the agency that is monitoring you, call every single day,do what you have to. Work with them, ask what you need to do and you'll have to do it. Since you've been in the program 15 months I really don't see how you could've forgotten to call twice in one month, call your sponsor, talk to your support group. Good luck!
