seasoned ICU nurses
I think it just depends on the person....We all have our unique attributes and strengths. Some new nurses do great in the ICU and others do not. I would not trade my MedSurg experience for anything!!! But I love what I do now as well! CV surgery Pts are my favorite - the sicker the better!
-
How long did you work med-surg before getting an ICU job?
Blah to that! I am a prior M/S nurse... Spent 5 years there and then transferred to SICU. I've now been in SICU for 5 years as well. It depends on the nurse, their skills, etc... Love my open heart patients - the sicker the better!!

How long did you work med-surg before getting an ICU job?
I worked for 5 years in Med-surg before I made the move to SICU (only because I needed the ICU experience to get into NICU)....I've been in the SICU now for 5 years and I love every single minute of it!!! Open heart's are my favorite - the sicker the better!! I think the need to have floor experience depends on your personality. I was a pretty "quiet" new nurse Who really need to get to know how to talk to physicians and patients and family members. I am extremely thankful for my background in med-surg nursing everyday! Where I work we higher brand-new nurses into the ICU all the time!

Proning ARDs patients
Don't delay proning you patient just because you don't have a bed!!! There are several great articles out there about the impact of proning on a patient's survival rates. With that being said, don't wait till your patient is knocking on heavens door to start harassing the doc about proning!!! Keep at it...know you P/F ratios...advocate, advocate, ADVOCATE!!! and get ready to "Roc" them :)

New nurse in ICU and I hate it...please help!
Sounds like you answered your own question...why not try hospice? You could stick it out for a few more months or change...do what's right for you...6 weeks orientation for an ICU, especially a new grad is a joke!.. Keep up the good work though, nursing can be challenging but oh so rewarding!

ratio for fresh CABG pts
Are you serious? Fresh CABG's should always be 1:1....Your facility should be ashamed to have their nurse tied to another patient! Wow...don't think I'd be working there long, what a liability!
- Do you like team nursing?

Do you like team nursing?
I HATE TEAM NURSING! My floor does not currently do this - Thank Heavens! But there are some floors in our hospital that do and I have floated there occasionally - I think I have way to much of an "A" personality for this to work for me! I was constantly checking to see if the work was done and offending others when I tried to help! GRRRR!

Port's and PICC's:????
I have seen many different techniques when it comes from de-accessing Ports and removing PICC's! I was curious what everyone was taught in school, vs hospital policies, vs what you are actually seeing on the floors!

New Med-Surg nurse
First off congratulations! Being a new nurse is very exciting and very scary all at once! Be thankful you have a manager who is actually paying attention! Try and take her advice - take a deep breath and really try and think about what's going on...ask questions..and try to present yourself in a non-frazzzzzelled type of way - easier said then done! It takes time!!! Good luck!

Med/Surg or Not to Med/Surg. That is the question?
GO WHERE YOU WANT TO GO! It is not necessary in this day in age to start out in Med-Surg! I have been working Med-Surg for 2 1/2 years and I feel like I am "stuck" here. My goal is to do NICU...and although I have acquired great skills and confidence and all that...I am finding it very hard to transfer to L&D, M/B or NICU....I wish I would have started out in NICU as a new grad! Good Luck

Excited! Kinda Off Topic!
My NICU job search is still ongoing...if anyone remembers me!:) I've interviewed at a couple different hospitals but usually get the "you don't have any experience in the NICU" excuse... So, I've been working Med-Surg now for 2 1/2 years! Yikes!...Anyways...long story short, had a patient today who needed to go to the Unit as soon as I got on the floor...but our ICU beds were full so I got the be his "1:1" nurse until we got him a bed (I still had 5 others! Luckily my Charge came to help with those!).....Had him for 5 hours, called report, transported him downstairs to SICU....helped get him settled...and the nurse asked me if I wanted to Transfer! Yeah! I of course said ABSOLUTELY! :anpom:(without any hesitation)....I am really excited about this proposition because I've been told this may be the route I have to take in order to prove I can do ICU! So hopefully...I will be in some kind of ICU soon!

Feeling detached after a rough week
Hugs to you! I am sorry to hear you are having such a difficult week! Although I am not a NICU nurse (yet!)...I just wanted to tell you I was thinking of you! Keep holding onto your faith in Christ! You sound like such a caring and loving nurse! My son passed away at 29 weeks and for a long time I wondered why he allowed such a horrible tragedy to happen....but that was 5 1/2 years ago and I would truly not be the nurse or woman I am today had it not been for God choosing to take him.... and although I miss him terribly, I am one of the lucky ones because I know that my son is in heaven!:1luvu:

Hospitals in South/Central Florida that give scholarships
I know that Lakeland Regional, Winter Haven Hospital, and Lake Wales used to do this...I am not sure anymore but I believe they still do....I did my ASN at PCC and worked for one of the above for two year FT, signed a paper and that was it! My schooling paid for! Absolutely Amazing!!! If you are a nursing student, check into the school and see if they offer it....Ours was a "relationship" btwn the Hospital and School, and I am not sure if it is offered to other students...Good Luck!:heartbeat

Is this too much information to share?
Haven't been on in a couple of days but I still wanted to add a comment! I too have a calling for the NICU! I lost my son at 29 weeks and through his short time I fell in love with the NICU. I have been on several interviews and I am starting to wonder if my willingness to share my personal experience had cost me the job offer! I am interested to see how your interview (s) go! Keep us posted!:heartbeat

Not told about a contact isolation patient!
Well darling, get used to it! It's pathetic that this happens - especially with pts with a known history, but it does! Kinda like when a pt presents with C-diff like symptoms and you have to wait for the test results to come back, by then it's been 2 days and you've been exposed! Therefore, ALWAYS wash your hands! and Always wear gloves - you never ever know!...And never wear your hospital shoes into your house! Some nurses leave them in the garage or put them in the trunk of their car!:heartbeat

Milking a JP drain?
We always milk JP's - otherwise they would clot off...seen it happen - not pretty!

Interviews
Both hospitals are great! South Florida Plant City is pretty small compared to Lakeland (LRMC)- but you get that nice home-town feeling! What kind of specialties are you looking for? Obviously Lakeland is going to have more - PM me for more info if you need it!
-
CMSRN - any effect?
I received my CMSRN a few months ago - Plus a small amount of money more per hour for having the certification! It looks great on your resume plus looks neat on my badge:lol2:! Seriously though, it gives me the peace of mind knowing I could pass it and gives me more confidence!

Interview today...
Had my interview today - it went pretty well and my essay rocked :rckn: - so we shall see! I am so excited! Plus the hospital I work at just opened a position in our NICU and of course I have already applied! Still won't know for a couple of weeks!!! GRRRRR!!!

Surgical nurse questions!
1. Always check the flap!!! 2. Almost always even if is says Adv as Tol, I start out slow - ice chips then jello/Clear liquids. If they can handle it I'll move 'em up 3. Poor managing by the Charge Nurse especially because you were a floater - but yup that's my typical day!

Bizarre Admitting Diagnosises
My favorite is "Sick" - no duh Sherlock!

Maybe a strange question...
As said before! The majority of us have HSV-I and a huge generation is coming up with HSV-II! What is it 1 out of every 4 people have HSV-II.

New RN moved to FL
I applied to a hospital in Orlando a couple of times and received no response - have you thought about working outside the area? Sanford? Lakeland? - I think some of the Lakeland/Winter Haven hospitals pay better anyway - or even Heart of Florida? Best of Luck
