Anyone else think HIPAA rules are getting out of hand?
It's a control issue with alot of flunkies in medical records who think they have the power to decide who can have copies of medical records even though they have the release right in from them from another hospital/clinic/instacare/dr's office.

Strep - Call in or go anyways?
If you work in the NICU PLEASE STAY HOME!!! Those poor little preemies don't need any more problems to deal with. I just got over a bout of bronchitis because a co-worker came to work sick because she thought the place would fall apart if she weren't there and I had to take 3 days off w/o pay due to my annual and sick leave used up for a recent surgery. I was not at all pleased not to mention the fact that I felt absolutely awful.:crying2:

Hooters as Job History...Could this hurt my chances of getting a job?
There are alot of nursing students who work as waitresses, cocktail waitresses, bartenders and have lots of customer service experience which really helps when you are at the bedside. As far as Hooters is concerned, the waitresses there are very courteous, friendly and do not flaunt their assets, plus the food is pretty good there.

Is Med Surg hard?? New grad. starting soon- not looking forward to 12 hours!
Med/Surg is definitely not a piece of cake but it is a great place to start out after nursing school. I did a year of med/surg after I graduated and I did learn a great deal which has helped me throughout my nursing career. Just take it one day at a time and look at it as another learning experience.

A Letter to Hollywood: Nurses Are Not Handmaidens
Please forward this letter to every network on television especially the ones that have soap operas, and every movie studio you can find. This is an excellent article and it's about time nursing is portrayed as highly respected profession.

Problem with Fundamentals of Nursing
The best thing to do is if you have a syllabus answer all the questions on your syllabus and use the textbook study guide otherwise you're going to really get overwhelmed. The instructors probably won't share that little piece of advice with you nor will they share that most of their test questions come out of they study guide and the syllabus. Also be sure to go over your class notes after class. Good Luck. Been there done that and I've been an RN for 17 yrs now.

Do you identify yourself as a nurse when you or your family are a patient?
I would imagine that if you are being admitted for inpatient or outpatient care, the admissions papers would have your occupation listed on them so there's no way around hiding the fact you are a nurse and it's really not anything to be ashamed of. Gadzooks!!! We worked our butts off for that RN. I'm not saying we should shout it from the rooftops but if asked, why deny it.

Native American Reservation nursing
Most nursing agencies pay for housing if you are a traveler working in IHS facilities. If you get hired by IHS I understand that some of the hospitals do provide housing for you.

Indian Reservation Nursing
Check out the Indian Health Services website. I worked in Gallup, NM for 12 weeks at the USPH Gallup Indian Medical Center as an agency nurse which is right in the heart of the Navajo Nation and really loved it.

TMCC Program
Oh Wow; I'm also a graduate of TMCC. Graduated 1993. They have an excellent reputation and very tough nursing program with 100% passing on the Nevada State Boards. TMCC Nursing Alumni please PM me. Would love to hear from you. I moved from Reno to Salt Lake City in 1996. For that matter would love to hear from any nurses living in Reno. I lived in Reno for 28 years and I sure do miss it.

Kind of bummed...My 4.0 is ruined
Ahhh Nursing School, such wonderful memories. You haven't lived or died til you have gone through nursing school, taken boards, etc.. Trust me, by the time you reach the end, you will be hoping and praying that you get at least a 75% since that is passing. Remember your patients won't give a fig about your GPA, but they will truly remember that you are a wonderful and compassionate nurse. Take care...

Gastric Banding to treat Type II Diabetes
Someone please pass this information on to the health insurances. Alot of them don't cover these procedures because they feel it's cosmetic.

Medical termination of pregnancy.
No therapeutic abortions are performed in any Catholic Hospitals that I know of. I don't think they even sell contraception in Catholic Hospitals either. Here in Utah where I live abortions are not done in any of the acute care facilities. Women who want abortions are referred to either Planned Parenthood or a Women's Clinic. I'm not sure about other states. If you have strong feelings one way or the other, wait until your interviewer asks and if they don't ask then by all means ask them what the hospital policy is.

Can an employer penalize you for calling-in due to illness?
You DO NOT HAVE TO SIGN ANYTHING that you disagree with and don't ever let them bully you into signing. Your kids come first and if they are sick and you need to stay home with them for that day then you need to stay home with them. Gadzooks!!! Sometimes kids can become ill very fast even from conjunctivitis. You can always find another job but what happens if your child becomes seriously ill and you can't be there for them??

My 9 year old patient was raped and required surgery
Because I'm a health care coordinator for kids in foster care, I deal with this on a daily basis. Just do what you have been doing and be there for her. Kids have really bad trust issues after something like this happens to them and when they feel safe enough they will start opening up about what happened. Chances are that you have gained her trust and she may open up to you. Be sure to document word for word what she tells you. I think you are doing a great job taking care of her.

Native American Reservation nursing
I worked at USPHS Gallup Indian Medical Center which is in Navajo Nation for 3 months as a traveler in their outpatient OB Clinic and really loved it. The Navajos are great to work with and the jewelry, rugs and pottery are candy for the eyes. Zuni is gorgeous too.

is it bad if i dont go to the christmas party tonight?
I'm with you on this one too. I don't like to socialize with people I work with after hours either. At our place the nurses on the health care team get together for a nice pot luck and gift exchange Christmas Party in our conference room. We have a great time and it's all on company time which has been allotted to us for this.

Nurses who became famous
Former Mouskateer Darlene Gillespie used to be an OR nurse until she got into some trouble with the law. Kathryn Crosby, Bing's widow. She graduated from Queen of Angels School of Nursing in Los Angeles.

Las Vegas - NOT new-grad friendly
I don't know what the pay is now since I haven't lived in Reno for quite some time but with California Nurses Association being their union, I'm sure St. Mary's pay will be quite good. There are several nurses here on this board who work at both St. Mary's and Renown so you may want to check the Nevada forum and check that out with them. Good Luck!!
