Stanford and Lucile Packard 2011 RN Residency
I just heard from a friend who is also waiting to hear that he was told they would still be calling people through this week. Don't know if that's helpful to you or not but I hope so!

Stanford and Lucile Packard 2011 RN Residency
I always prefer to think that "no news is good news" until I actually get bad news! But of course that's easier to say since I've already gotten my good news. I have a former classmate who is waiting to hear as well (he also interviewed on that same unit). I'll be keeping my fingers and toes crossed for you that HR gets back to you soon with a wonderful phone call! I think we were all pretty lucky to have gotten as far as we did. It's such a tough and competitive market out there and so hard to navigate. I'm grateful for this job as I haven't gotten a bite on anything else at all. I applied to Washington Hospital in Fremont (where quite a few of my classmates got interviews) and didn't even make the first cut to get an interview. So it just goes to show you that you never know what people are looking for in a candidate!

Stanford and Lucile Packard 2011 RN Residency
Got the call yesterday and was offered a position at Stanford! So thrilled! It was awesome to hear from HR that they were all so impressed by the caliber of people they interviewed that they added an additional three positions (now hiring 15). Go us!

Stanford and Lucile Packard 2011 RN Residency
That's awesome you got asked to interview for a third unit! Which one? What other two did you interview on? I met with F ground and D3. I think both interviews went well but it can be so hard to judge. That's awesome that a friend was offered a position already! I too hope they still have people they need to call! Good luck with the third interview!

meggleweggle - have you had both of your unit interviews? How did they go? I have my second one tomorrow. I would hope we will hear something from HR by the end of next week?

I got the call this morning too, as did another classmate. Yeah! Glad I can breath a little easier for a bit.

Bay Area New Grad Programs in 2011
Just did. I'm an "application has been reviewed" person. Looks like I only applied to one position but it doesn't specify in the job title if it's day/night. I hold out little hope since it hasn't been forwarded. Thanks for the reminder to check the status! Good luck to you!

Bay Area New Grad Programs in 2011
I did but I haven't heard anything yet. You?

Stanford and Lucile Packard 2011 RN Residency
When I did my phone interview she said they wouldn't be calling about the panel interviews for Stanford until the middle of July. LPCH candidates will be called first (end of June/beginning of July) because that program starts first.

Dameron Hospital Versant Summer 2011
Has anyone gotten a call or gone for an interview with Dameron?

Stanford and Lucile Packard 2011 RN Residency
And an update: Not sure if it's squeaky wheel syndrome or not, but just got a call this morning from the SHC/LPCH HR department for a phone screen for next week. Woot!
-
Stanford and Lucile Packard 2011 RN Residency
Yeah - I talked to HR today and was told it would be another 1.5 before they get through all the phone screens. I applied on the 19th. Glad I'm not alone in my misery of waiting for the phone to ring!

Stanford and Lucile Packard 2011 RN Residency
Argh! I applied on the 19th and I still haven't gotten a call for a phone interview. I contacted HR and was told I should get a call within the next 1.5 weeks. It just sucks waiting because every other single person I know who has applied (and applied after I did) has gotten a call for the phone screen. Just let me say again AAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH! Waiting sucks. Congrats to all of you that have had your phone screen already. I'm green with envy!

Add me to the list of USC rejection email receivers! Oh well. Back to waiting for Stanford to call . . .

Stanford and Lucile Packard 2011 RN Residency
Got my third letter yesterday & sent off my application last night. Can't believe I'm so nervous about a phone interview but it's my first opportunity since I've started applying for jobs! Good luck to everyone!

Did any one get acceptance to the CSU East Bay Hayward?
There are many quarters where you will need to find a 1 unit course because the nursing classes only add up to 10 or 11 unit hours and you need 12 for full time. There are some extra classes you may needto take that will help make up the difference but a lot of us scramble to get a 1 unit PE class.

Different nursing schools: SFSU or CSUEB
I'm currently a BSN student at CSUEB. I didn't apply to the BSN program at SFSU because they won't accept you if you already have a bachelors degree. I did apply to their Advanced Entry Masters program but did not get accepted. I can't answer which program is harder to get in but recommend you apply to both. As for clinical sites, it varies. For CSUEB all of our sites are in the East Bay, typically Oakland, Castro Valley, Hayward and Fremont. But it does vary year to year depending on what contracts are renewed and what facilities have openings for students. I live in SF but have found commuting to CSUEB to be pretty doable. I probably do 50% driving & 50% public transit. Good luck!

Should I go or not? Opinons please...
I so struggled with that fear when I turned down the position at USF. But as many pointed out to me, if I got into that program I would get into another one! I knew that logically they were correct but it didn't help allay my fears at all. Eventually, for me, the fear of paying back that much money overwhelmed the fear of not getting in to another program. I did have to detour in my plans, but if I've learned one thing in nursing school it's that you've GOT to be flexible and learn to roll with the punches. If you can't do that you won't make it in school, I can promise you that! :) I will tell you that even though I saved & planned for school, it's ending up costing more than I had anticipated. Books, uniforms, food/snacks while studying at cafes, transportation & commuting costs, "suggested" books, nursing gear & paraphernalia and other things you just don't think of until you're paying for them. They all add up. Whatever decision you make will be the right one for you at that time, just don't let fear be your motivating factor.

Should I go or not? Opinons please...
I understand the feeling of things passing you by or that you're not on a "life path" yet. I'm also in the Bay Area and know the fever and fervor of trying to get into a nursing program, any program. When I decided to start on my path towards nursing school I was 29; when I graduate from my program I will be 35. I made a conscious decision to delay achieving my goal due to money. I was accepted in the Advanced Master's program at USF but ultimately turned them down due to the cost of the program. I've already paid off student loans once and want to avoid doing it again. The cost of the USF program would have ended up being around $80K. I can't even begin to fathom paying that amount back in a reasonable amount of time while still actually having a life. I am now in a BSN program at a CSU. That extra year I decided to wait allowed me to save up money for school. I should be able to get through my entire program accrue less than $8000 in loans, all of the subsidized. While I'm not coming out with a MSN I will be able to work as an RN and eventually go back for my Masters. I may even be able to get some employer compensation towards that degree but even if I can't, I can at least work and earn while I'm doing it. I too would like to be an NP but had to admit that I needed to take a different path than the direct one! I suggest really looking at your options and your needs. Also, check out a loan repayment calculator like this one: http://www.finaid.org/calculators/loanpayments.phtml. It will give you an idea of what kind of salary you'll need to start repaying your loan. Also remember that unsubsidized loans will start accruing interest from the date of disbursement while you're in school. So you'll be accruing interest during school - that can add up. And I think your concerns about jobs and the economy are well founded. Do you know how much career/job placement help Samuel Merritt gives their students? The Bay Area, and a lot of California, seem to be pretty tough on new grads in terms of finding employment. There are so many schools dumping out so many graduates that the market is flooded. You've got a tough decision to make. I don't want it to seem like I'm being a negative nellie but I'm a proponent of being a realist. When I first started thinking about nursing I was bound & determined to do an Advanced Entry Masters program. The universe threw up some obstacles and gave me some different options and in the end I decided to change my path. I'm completely happy with my program (as happy as you can be when your life is taken over by school!) and satisfied that I won't be saddled with a mountain of debt at the end. I wish you luck in making your decision. Listen to your heart, your gut & your brain. It's a triad that will give you your answer!

How to pursue a second bachelors degree?
Once you actually graduate, if you decide to pursue nursing you would be a post-baccalaureate student. Some BSN programs will not allow people who already have a bachelor's degree to pursue a bachelor's in nursing (San Francisco State for example) but some will (Cal State East Bay). Advanced entry master's programs can be hard to get into and do often depend on having a good GPA. Research the schools and programs in your area to see what their policies are for second-degree seeking students. I did all of my pre-req classes at local community colleges. It's very common. Good luck!

All white uniforms? Eek...help!!
Flesh colored bra and undies. I wear "granny panties" because they really eliminate any lines. Also looser scrub bottoms help! Take the appropriate undergarments with you to a uniform store and try them on, you'll see what I mean! White underwear really stands out! signed - Marshmallow Gal

Peds ER Tech job
May I ask about the interview? Did it go well? Were you offered the position? I need to blanket my area hospitals with my resume for ED tech positions and I'd love to hear that you got a position!
