maybe you friend didn't "report" you but went to ask what happened and ended up getting into a little bit of trouble herself and the DON decided to make the big deal out of it. i would suggest you might consider writing a letter to both your friend and the DON, stating it wasn't your intention to make anyone uncomfortable, nor to cross any professinal lines, and appoligize.

A unit in trouble
II think you need to tell the NM what the senior nursing are doing, there is NO WAY 2-3 pt verse 7 pt is fair for any reason they are abusing their role and you adnthe other nurse if they always got the one less pt, while not nice, it's not a huge deal Ithinkthe NM need to know what up,

DEATH TO THE ALARM!
I work at a place that has a motion senser alarm where the sound emitting part is at the desk so the pt never has to hear it. I found it very anoying but I guess it works

Wanted to get everyone's opinion--regarding hipaa
I think it depend on what "descision Maker" legally entails I work as part time a pvt Geri case manger fora legal guardian of demented elders. I have written permission to have access to all medical information for our clients. I can walk into any facility and look at any of their charts without notice, I just have to give them a copy of my releases. is the pt compitent? are they demented? a HCP doesn't have any rights until the pt is unable to maek their own health care choices. if you didn't have written documentation of his right to look at the chart you did the correct thing. if he does have a right to the chart he need to provide it to the facility to be put in the chart

Holiday Schedule
most places I've worked put up the sign-up for holidays just after the new year, this let people sign up for what they want and then the scheduler make sure it all works

Leaving before contract is up? Seeking advice
go to HR and have a meetign with HR and the nurse manager. they are legally obligated to keep confidenial info private. if you would be a risk to give notice, that it would give an abuser a chance to figure out your plan to leave. make an appt w/ HR, then pack you bags, meet with HR/ nurse manger tell them what and why and just keep on driving. good luck and be safe

what nurses do in this situation?
sounds a little bit like a homework assignment to me... and you do need to notify the MD the pt is refusing the meds

balloon testing prior to insertion of foley
if you can't remove the fuild in the ballon just cut the catheter... sure has heck DON"T just pull it out if you can't remove the fuild. Working in Home care/ hospice finding a syrigne to remove the fuild can be imposible but you can always deflate the balloon by cutting the catheter. you can just cut off the fill port while covering the port with a chuck and the balloon is empty.
