You are the nurse for that shift you have to do what you feel is right. I too work with alzheimers and related dementia residents, and often feel that other nurses simple abuse PRN meds used for anxiety/aggression in order to not have the hassle of dealing with them. I try snacks, drinks, toileting first. Watch for signs of pacing, outbursts, wanting to leave. Monitor closely. If this does not work, then use prn meds. They are effective for reducing aggressive behaviors but should be used cautiously. JMHO.

I am an LPN who is working in a very nice, privately owned ALF. It seems that for the past six months, the residents that are coming in to live there require alot of care than what ALF can provide. These residents, most are in the later stages of Alzheimer's are in need of total care. The facility is half full and I know that they are looking for warm bodies who have $$$. I am sooo frustrated because I am the only nurse on day shift caring for 30+ residents doing new admissions, med pass, processing MD orders, dealing with pharmacy, residents, and there families. We do have HH come in to do labs and the occasional wound dressing. Is anyone else experiencing this?

There is one in every facility. He definately needs to be put in his place and needs a review of what his job description is. I would write him up. Im sure the other real "Nurse's" will follow suit. Good luck!

If I were you, I would accept job #2. Its steady work as and you don't have to sit and wait for a call as you would being a PRN. Probably alot less stress to and you do have other Nurses there for help and support. Good luck!

My Mother said it best. Never let an employer know that your ass is hanging out. Meaning, never let them believe that you really need a job that bad.

Don't beat yourself over it. You may consider confiding in your instuctors about your situation shortly after you start school. Do you live in Illinois? I had a DUI seven years prior to entering LPN school. The state first denied my license until I had to prove that the case was taken care of and I also had to write a letter to the Board saying that it was a terrible choice and I learned from this mistake. Good luck in school and study hard! Also stay out of trouble.

Thanks for the reply. I attended a private vocational LPN school and got the impression from the CEO John, that other LPN schools are substandard to the former Americare. Were the books included in the RN tuition? It seems that they nickel and dime you for everything. I did not like the way it was mentioned that Americare graduates have a priority in gaining entrance to the program. I received a quality education and have no regrets on the school I chose to complete my LPN. Thanks again!:)

Anyone out there from Ambria college of Nursing?

I am an LPN and had attended the first RN info session but was not given alot of information about this program as far as tuition, prerequsites, ect. When I contacted the school, I was told to attend another info session:confused: Please let me know if you attend this school and any other info. Thanks!

Its always about the almighty dollar. If you like your job you should suck it up. Jobs are difficcult to come by.

I wouldnt worry to much. Depending on the state you may have to write the Department of Regulation a letter saying that you made a poor choice and will never do it again. This happened to me 10 years before I went to nursing school. No worries.:)

Lost my job for clocking in 8 minutes before my shift. Company fought unemployment but I won. Had previously discussed with employer that since the facility did not have a charge nurse (She was fired 3 weeks before) I had to take on the role since i was the only day Nurse for 30 residents. Co. lost there business due to finances and poor management. What goes around comes around!

I took Nclex-Pn in February and passed at 85. I mainly studied from Saunders 3rd edition and Kaplans test strategies. Nclex was not like any other test that I had taken in Nursing school. There was a lot of infection control like when to put on gown or to wear gloves. How did you fare in pharm? I think I had maybe 4-5 meds and only knew one. I studied for about a month but did not feel it really helped. You know the theory just apply your knowledge to the test. You will come out after the test feeling horrible (everyone does) so dont worry. Good luck!!

I felt the same way as you did. I took the NCLEX- Pn In February and passed at 85 questions. Which CD's are you usuing? I concentrated on Saunders and Kaplans stategies on how to answer questions. Whatever you do, DO NOT RESCHEDULE!!! YOU know the material. Good Luck!!!

Passed NCLEX-PN! It has been an agonizing 48hrs. waiting for my results to appear. I walked out of the test feeling completely ill and ignorant. I was praying that the computer would shut off at 85 so I could just leave, thank God it did. My advice to future test takers is to study from Saunders and Kaplan and to answer as many questions possible and to go over the rationales and most importantly BELEIVE IN YOURSELF!!!!!!!!! Thanks for all your support. Im so proud that I now am a LPN!!!!

Im also took NCLEX PN yesturday and stopped at 85. I left feeling completely ill. My test was a lot of priority, infection control, Med surg, peds afew ob and psyche. No calculations and no hot spot and drop and drag. The waiting is nerve wrecking. I know how you feel but we have to remain positive!

I purchased these so called "flashcards" in preparation to take the nclex-pn. U R given a stack of papers that are perforated to be flashcards. Very disappointing to say the least and will be sending them back! I would suggest sticking with saunders or evolve. Good luck!

i know exactly how you feel. i was also robbed of going to graduation due to severe weather except that they did not cancel. a third of the class was unable to make it but i hear from the grapevine that there was an opportunity to have it cancelled the night before with us getting our money back.(it was at a restaurant and i paid $150.00 for myself and 5 people) what hurt the most was that i was class salutitorian and worked on a great speech for a week. i am left feeling angry and bitter knowing that i will never get that chance again. i wish you the best of luck on your nursing career. thanks for letting me vent.

I feel for you. Med surg was the bulk of my curriculum. It is impossible to memorize everything. Review things like S/S and basic nursing interventions always keeping the nursing process in mind. Youll get through it most of my classmates struggled. Keep positive!:nuke:
