Schools that require you to find a preceptor (rant)
OP, I see where you are coming from about schools needing to give students more assistance in finding preceptors. Schools may be taking advantage of students in that way. However, the rest of the post comes off as looking down on people. I'm sure that was not your intention. But I don't think you can have it both ways. On the one hand, some don't like schools that cater to adult learners and offer a non traditional or alternative route to an education. On the other hand, those same people want nurses to wait about 10 years to go back to school. Well after 10 years, a women is probably going to have kids, a husband, a mortgage and a job. So that means she is not a traditional student who can sit in a classroom all day or wait on a program with a once a year start date and application deadline 10 months in advance, lol. She needs something a little different but that doesn't make a person lazy or stupid. Most medical students I know did not wait 10 years to go to medical school. So they are a different type of student. They went when they were single, childless and carefree. Which means they can put all their efforts into traditional schooling. Yet young nurses are often discouraged from going back to school. If a nurse comes on here and says she's a 21 year old, single, new grad with parents willing to pay tuition to any school she wants. Many posters will tell her to wait 10 years. Well in 10 years she'll be going to University of Phoenix, lol. Again you can't have it both ways. It seems like the online programs which some dislike so much are the way of the future. We are moving towards a technology society and people have to get used to it. These programs are ahead of the curve. Also, I see many students comparing themselves to M.D students and their standards. Talking about physicians do this and physicians do that. So I wonder, if you're really about that life, why not got to medical school? Is one of the reasons because medical school is longer, harder, costlier or more rigid. If it is one of those reasons, then the same things you are looking down on others for are the same reasons you want to go the NP route yourself. And that's ok, there is nothing wrong with looking for something more convenient to your life style in trying to reach your goals.:)

Are credits from WGU transferable?
No I don't go to WGU. I think their approach sounds good though. It's different.

Are credits from WGU transferable?
Wait, how did my post turn into a thread? I don't remember doing that, lol. Thanks. I figured it would be up to each school but I wanted know of anyone had any experience trying. So your story is helpful.
-
Are credits from WGU transferable?
Are credits from WGU able to be transferred to another school? I am not talking about transferring a degree, I mean transferring classes from WGU to another school, if for example you find that you don't like WGU.

Prevalence of Christians in the field of nursing
See, I look at it the opposite way. To me nursing is not a pure science like being a rocket scientist or something. Nursing is partly about science. Nursing is also about helping the sick, comforting people, caring for those who can't care for themselves, etc. Those things are very compatible with Christianity and other religions. A lot of religiously affiliated hospitals have nursing programs. I would think there are more nurses of faith then not.

So who do nurses marry or have as civil partners???
he's a professional football player? cool.
-
Is your Hospital requiring a copy of your diploma or transcripts?
No, my hospital just asked for a copy of my license. I think that is enough.

Prevalence of Christians in the field of nursing
Oh ok, I misunderstood what you were trying to say. My fault. Sorry Mclennan.

Prevalence of Christians in the field of nursing
I think you will find a lot of Christians in nursing. As other have mentioned Nursing and many hospitals in this country have roots in faith, Adventist Hospitals, Catholic Hospitals, ect. So you won't have a problem finding Christians. I do wonder if the percentage of Christian nurses is higher than the general population or other jobs such as banking. That would be a interesting survey to do. Off topic, but I think Florence Nightingale believed she was called by God to help others. Then she got her training at a religious school. So she was inspired by faith, at least in her young adult years. I had never read that she turned Buddhist.

Nursing Diagnosis...the sacred cow that needs to go.
I heard that schools are moving away from teaching nursing diagnosis. I for one agree with those who think it is useless.

Volunteer organization requires me to sign a statement of faith
Agreed. If OP doesn't agree with what this organization stands for that she should not sign that paper. That's wrong and dishonest, IMHO. Also asking them for an alternative statement borders on disrespectful and can be taken the wrong way. OP should continue looking for another organization to volunteer for.

If you think you need to call the MD, CALL THE MD!!!!
Say What! This is exaclty the reason some nurses don't like to call doctors. To be honest I would not mind working on a unit where the charge nurse advises you on calling doctors like the one the OP mentioned. I guess this is one of those things that will get easier with experience.:)

There Are Easy Nursing Jobs......
how do you get jobs like these? how many years experience do you need? this sounds very good.

Opinions ? RN who reads at grade 5 level ?
I agree. I think this story is inspirational because it shows that you can overcome your obstacles no matter what they are. Good for her! I wish her luck with her future.

"I didn't want to go into nursing because I didn't want to be labled gay"
I see where the OP's family memeber was coming from cause where I live the stereotype is kinda true. There is a bigger proportion of gay males than in other careers that I know of. About half of the male nurses I know are gay. That's alot. I don't find half the policemen I know to be gay or anything like that. Maybe it is because people encourage their staight sons to be doctor, I don't know. Anyway, I think the more staight male nurse the get into the field the more the stigma will go away. Things are changing. I don't think it is as bad now as it was when the OP's family member was think about getting into nursing. So that's good.

Do you do venipunctures as a nurse?
I never learned this in school. I'm suprised at how many people in this thread did learn venipuncture because most recent grads I know did not learn this skill either. Maybe it's just the area where I live? Anyway, I don't know why the lab teacher was acting so "scared". Judging by this thread half of us did not learn venipuncture so I'm sure you not the first she's ever met, lol. Don't feel bad.

Anti-Intellectualism/Autonomy in nursing
In general I think nurses should stay within thier scope and folllow the rules. These rules are in place for a reason and that is to protect everyone involve, inlcuding the patients. Someone posted that she has seen nurses give patients oxygen when they did not need it or something like that. I'm not suprised becuase these nurses were acting outside what they should be doing in the first place. Let the doctors do what they do. That's what they get the big bucks for. I'm comfortable with the amount of autonomy nurses have. The more autonomy you have the more responsibility you have when things go wrong. No? That is why I would never want to be an M.D.

Friends cheating.. what to do?
Ah, so she did not realize it was really cheating. Ok makes sense. It is a good thing that you let Jesus take the wheel. Asking God for guidance is always the best way to go. Your did the right thing. I am glad things worked out where you did not have to tell on her. God bless.

Friends cheating.. what to do?
Cool! I did not want to seem like I was being argumentative. The OP has many good recommendations to consider and maybe she will get a few more. Hope she lets us know the outcome.
