University of South Alabama Fall 2012 DNP

Yes, it is completely online except for clinical hours. Those are done in the area you live. I believe there is one time when students need to travel to campus for about three days during the second year for clinical orientation. USA does not require references or GRE. Good luck if you decide to apply! :)

University of South Alabama Fall 2012 DNP

My overall GPA was 3.7. USA only looks at your cumulative GPA. My essay was only one page long. I believe there was a word limit on it. I honestly did not spend much time on the essay. I stated my reason for wanting to continue my education and that was that. When I applied, I had two years of psychiatric nursing experience in both an inpatient and outpatient setting under my belt. Everyone is nervous when applying, so telling you not to be is pointless lol. Just know that you have as good a chance as anyone else. If your GPA isn't as strong, maybe your work experience is. Or maybe your essay will be better than most. Good luck!
  4. I will be taking classes part-time. I plan on working full-time...plus I have a 6-month old at home too...what am I getting myself into? lol :) How about you, nf0772?

    Grad school group projects

Ugh...I have always hated group work. I think it is a personality thing though. Even at home and work, I would much rather just do things myself so I can get them done without waiting on anyone else to. That way, I can do things to my own satisfaction as well. I'd say we're a bit Type-A lol.
  6. I received my acceptance letter yesterday! I'll be in the Family Psychiatric NP BSN-DNP. I am also excited that we do not need to travel to campus for the orientation. From what I read, I believe it will be held online for Fall 2012. I would love to speak to any classmates! :)

I received my acceptance letter yesterday! I will be in the Family Psychiatric NP BSN-DNP program. It looks like we don't have to travel to campus for orientation either, which is GREAT! Hope I'm interpreting that right from what I read lol. I would love to speak to anyone else that will be starting this program in the fall! Congrats to everyone! Looks like we will all be going to USA this fall so far. :)
  8. Congrats nf0772!! I'm still waiting on my letter. I live quite a ways from AL though so it might not get here today . I applied for the same track as you.

I haven't heard yet. My mail doesn't get to me until after 4:30pm...ugh lol. I work at a mental health outpatient clinic so I am hoping that one of the CNS's here will be willing to be my preceptor. I'm not going to worry about that until I know whether I am in or not lol. If I were you, I would just do some research and maybe make a list of Psych NP's and CNS's near you just to get the ball rolling and see who you may like to consider as a preceptor. Also, I believe I read somewhere that a psychiatrist can precept students for a certain amount of hours...so that may be helpful if I'm correct about that.

Congrats linzybinzy! I also have heard some negatives but a lot of positives as well. I think that like with any program, some people will not fit in with the style of teaching, work load, etc etc. I read a lot of comments about students not having support throughout the program as well. During my undergraduate years, I realized that quite a few people want to be spoon fed by teachers throughout classes. USA is quite up front about the fact that students have to go through the process of finding and setting up clinical sites. I think that one can assume that online classes demand a lot of self-motivation and flexibility in learning. I would like to hear more about how these students felt they did not receive support by the school.

You are right, it will be nice to know either way lol. I'm quite a ways from Alabama, so my letter probably won't get to me until Wed or Thurs . I have heard of a lot of people who got accepted and did not receive phone calls...so I wouldn't worry about that. I didn't feel too positive after my call so it might not be a good thing lol. Good luck to you all!

    MSN NP programs becoming obsolete?

Ahh...like I said, I wasn't 100% sure...for some reason 2015 somehow got stuck in my head lol. I believe the person from my state's BON was simply giving her opinion that going straight for the DNP would be beneficial...not necessarily advocating for it. There are still many schools that offer MSN NP programs which, like the above poster said, would have their graduates grandfathered in if/when MSN programs do become obsolete.

    MSN NP programs becoming obsolete?

I believe by 2015, all NP programs will be DNP. I am not 100% sure of that though. I know a lot of schools are transitioning their NP MSN programs to DNP. When I contacted my state's BON to inquire about the DNP, I was highly encouraged to apply for programs that offer BSN-DNP and not even consider the MSN programs. I believe that with the change to DNP, employers will prefer NPs with DNPs. I also think there has been a huge increase in applicants to MSN programs who are trying to beat that DNP date d/t the MSN route not taking as long/costing as much.

    HESI Every SINGLE Semester?

At my school, we had to take a HESI exam for each class at the end of each semester. If we did not meet our school's passing score, we had to do some remedial work...which was never anything too daunting. I probably passed two of them out of all the classes. I wouldn't put a lot of weight on them...I graduated at the top of my class and passed the NCLEX on my first try. I found HESI to have incredibly random questions...and I definitely studied for the NCLEX a lot more. Unless your school counts your HESI score as part of your grade...I wouldn't spend too much time worrying about it.
  15. Congrats tiff! One more week of waiting for letters (I hope that's all...lol). I only applied to USA and only the BSN-DNP. Now I'm wishing I would have applied to the MSN track as well to better my chances. I received a student ID number from the financial aid office yesterday. I'm getting my hopes up from every little thing lol.
