No, paychecks are not right, have to watch every shift is actually clocked in on clock. Was shorted 24 hours, they wanted me to wait for pay until next pay period, I told them I had bills, I had done the work, and I wanted the pay in an hour. I no longer work there, the problems are still overwhelming, this DON has lost some good staff. But, LTC has a history of being a mess.

We had a terrible winter, several times the roads were closed, staff stuck. Not one time did the DON say "thanks for the effort", or come in when she could get there and help out. Work short of staff every shift, too many things to etell. Just hate it.

Sorry to have caused flak about the "gossip" remark, but we see ads for Pa, DC, and Md in a few of our state newspapers, so when they say "new grads welcome", I think they mean it.

Most DON's/ADON's I have had contact with are a waste of time when it comes to support for staff. They paste a fake smile on their face, listen to half truths, and then do what ever is easy for them, not the facility, not the resident, nor the staff. Lord, LTC is the pits.

Jobless, You have my best wishes and prayers for a job soon. I have teachers in the family who are jobless because they do not have 3 years experience, but you just have to keep looking. Have you considered relocating? Texas has jobs, or so they say. DC, MD, PA too from the gossip. Good luck.

Had a friend who worked for the Navy in NC for about three years. She did it to get on her feet after a nasty, totally devastating divorce. She was not in love with the job, it was her extra one, but she was able to get on her feet, bills paid, and move to another area in 3 years vs 10 years. He really left her with bills, bills, bills plus 3 kids. He ran to Mexico with an older, wealthy woman who fleeced her husband out of a million dollars. Nice guy.

LTC is no picnic. You have to have a strong back and strong resolve to remain in LTC for an extended period of time. Good luck.

The hard work will pay off in the end. Do all you can do to go to school and become a nurse. Jobs may be tighter right now but they are still there and the money makes it worth it most days. Good luck to all who want to be a nurse.

Good Morning Neighbors, I have several cousins living and working in the Southern Ohio area presently, we speak on the phone about twice a month, and they are telling me the job situation is awful there right now. Both of them are working, but they say they have been called off within the past month twice. Low census. That surprised me, the bad weather would have been reason to need extra staff in many places. So my question is, how is the job situation in your area of Ohio? What area are you in, SEO, SWO, NO, NEO, NWO. CO? Just curious. Thanks for the time you take to anwer this.

I will be the first to tell anyone I know nothing about depo. My daughter called this week and was telling me her friend had a reaction to a depo shot. Is this possible? Any explanation would be appreciated. Thanks.

Let me apologize by saying:yes, I know I am supposed to give the exact site when I say I saw something in the paper or on the net and I would if I knew how to do it but I don't so I do the best I can in being precise in telling where and when I read something. Have said that, I was digging around on the msn.com site last evening, looking under law and health issues, and saw a listing of the top 50+ worst nursing homes in the nation. Naturally I clicked on to the list, expecting to see a home from WV listed. Imagine my surprise and delight, when after reading the whole list and then reading it again, not one home from WV was on the list. Finally, a worst list WV did not make! I am still in shock.

Well it is official. The Charleston Gazette printed a big story on this fact in todays paper. WV has the lowest rate for passage of the NCLEX test of all 50 states. The Gazette stated that every school in the state but two had decreased passage rates despite taking the best and brightest students they could get. Every school is attempting to increase their passage rates and re-evaluate their programs. Of course, every school is saying the need for instructors is critical. So, anybody have any thoughts on this subject? It has been forever since I went to school. My cousin is in nursing school now, she has called me several times, seeking assistance. When I tell her what I see as a problem, she freaks out. When we discuss skills, she freaks out. This girl will graduate in May, and to me, she has no idea what to do or how to do it. She is a honor student, has gone to all clinicals, and is very bright. I am at a loss on what to tell her. I just know I do not want her as a nurse for me or my family. Too many times when I have attempted to show her an area she is missing in a care plan, or I have attempted to give her advice, tips on assessments or skills, she says "we do not do that now." So, what do younger nurses do now? Have basic nursing practice's changed so much? About a year ago, when care plans really became an issue with her group, several older nurses were asked to assist these students, we met, were broke up into groups, started working on different patients and their care plans. I was amazed, no one had a idea of how to formulate a nursing diagnosis, set realistic nursing interventions, set time defined improvments or set realistic evaluation periods. Lets just say patient teaching, developing tips for coping skills for patients and the family, and long range patient goals were not even covered. Am I nuts? This is how I nurse, sure I fall short at times, but how in the world do these girls expect to come out of school and take care of patients if they have no plan, no interventions, no evaluations, no goals, or no patients teaching? How do you not know some basic problems patients face with a disease? Sorry this is so long guys, but I am truly baffled. I am scared too. I just do not know what nursing is these days, at least, around here.

Here in WV, we have doctors giving out narcotics to anybody, getting DUI's, but they practice, even a racketeering conviction was overlooked, but if a nurse falls into a grey area, she is put through the mill. I really have not had a problem, but friend was accused by "ex" of forgery and went through a real bad time. Nurses are human, if lawyers, doctors, and policemen get off , why can a nurse never get a break? Moral turpitude is a wide subject to many no matter what the modern defination says. :angryfire

The whole situation surrounding this patient and her refusal of care is SAD. I hope the staff members involved in this case get some emotional support and stress counseling. I am sure each and every staff member attempted to do the best job they could do under extremely difficult circumstances.
