Seeing loved ones before death?
I have been witness to a few deaths on our ward...and the memory that sticks in my mind is how the face relaxes and seems so peaceful when people do pass from this earth. I have also had an elderly lady ask me in the middle of a night shift how she should slip away in the night as she had made peace with her family...I sat at her bedside holding her hand and asked her to tell me some favourite stories from her life...about 2 minutes into the story of how she met her husband she took a deep breath and passed away...very peaceful.

Hostile staff
Thanks to all the suggestions Yes I took it to my manager immediately and the nurse in question was spoken to. We also had a staff meeting regarding the behaviour and how swearing at others is eligible for instant dismissal. Some people are so unprofesional

Patient to Nurse Ratio
I work on a very busy acute surgical ward, we usually have 4-5 patients and up to 9 on a night shift.

when to give and hold PRN morphine
PRN meds are written for just that reason...as required. If the pt says they have pain and there is an order written...give it.

Hanging IV bags
I would continue to use the same line and be sure the lines are changed every 72 hours or as per your hospital protocol..

Sharing Personal Information at Work
We have a similar nurse on our ward and once she answered such questions as kids and marriage and reasons for not wanting either people were pleasantly satisfied with her honesty and friendliness...

New RN hating night shift
How crazy! Why do you have to work permanent nights for that long? I find that insane....We only have to do 4 night shifts a month...

Hostile staff
Any ideas on how to deal with a hostile staff member who is disgruntled by others gaining promotions?

quit nursing after med errors?
Have a few weeks of being supervised with your medication rounds, explain what each med is and what it is for, link the med back to the patient condition. This strategy worked well on our ward with a post grad.

Shift to shift dynamics, gotta love 'em!
What is the big deal with taking a break that you are entitled to take. If we don't get a break on our night shifts we get paid overtime :)

I work with a DUMB nurse!
It is so frustrating when people are overconfident, make mistakes and do not have the sense to admit when they have made a mistake. People's lives are at risk with such nurses
