How does the Doc order the rate in IVF administration?
In paediatrics. you would go by this rule the "4,2,1" rule 4ml/hr * the first 10kg 2ml/hr * the second 10kg and 1ml/hr for every subsequent kg. So a 40 kg child most likely will get 80ml/hr full maintenance. But i think island40 hit the nail on the head for your scenario. I just thought id put it out there..

Curious female here! :)
why did i pick nursing!? well.. i finished school on 02' did one year of civil engineering in 03' then decided to transfer to nursing because i was always going to work in somehting that helps people. in engineering i wanted to make like a charity foundation in africa or something that puts in to place engineering interventions to make infrastructure, drains and plumbing, safe. anyway turns out that would be a round about way to help people, so i decided to help people when they are sick. then i decided when i finished my general degree to help kids because i enjoy working with them better than old people. sometimes they say the nicest things, they also let you know when they dont like you! but more often then not.. the kids and parents make it worthwhile!

facial hair?
i went to work today with a mo. we have this thing in australia call movember.. blokes grow a mo in support of mens helth issues like depression and prostate cancer.. why should the pink ribbon get all the attention! so i rock up today not with a handlebar mo like the guy off american chopper, but more of a 70's mo.. everyone hated it! i didnt get in trouble, they just said i was a bit of Media star. where i work anthing pretty much goes as long as you act professional i think.

Dilantin/Phenytoin Question
never ever a push. you can cause cardiovascular collapse. so you'd put it in a minumum of 50ml NaCl (dilute to 1 - 6mg/ml), preferbally infuse into a large vein. look out for hypotension. give over 30 minutes (unless its a loading dose) cheers.

RN + Engineering degree
my house mates doing biomed engineering at uni. he loves it. i don't understand why you want to persue nursing if down the track you know you'll do engineering. i doubt youll get any credit or any thing advantageous doing nursing first. i started out at uni studying civil engineering. i quit after the first year because i wanted to work with people not things.. or structures. but hey. do what pleases you :)

Post Graduate Studies
I probabaly sounded like a bit of a lazy aussie in that post, but i do enjoy studying and learning.. and i want to learn as much as i can. however i do this everyday. i dont need a bit of paper at the end of the year to say that ive been learning things. its the formal education thats going to get me somewhere and so yeh.. i guess i am doing it to look good. the material presented to me would be easy enough to grasp from a badly written text book, however i can't put that on my CV - that i read alot. So i need the qualifications. It costs $12200 at melbourne uni. my work place will pay a third, apparently. and there is a $2000 scholarship on offer from an auxilliary of the hosptial. so if things go well.. it could cost $6200. I'm pretty sure i will submit my application in the comming weeks. Ive done the math. Even if it doesnt get me no where and im just a nurse forever.. it will end up being useful in my worklife, make things easier.. and finacially it will pay itself off in 4 years and 3 months (on the current allowance for having a post grad diploma) or if i got theat scholarship.. 2 years. bethem, what are you doing post grad qualifications in??

Nurses with tattoos...
dont regret your tatts steve, they're obviously a big part of you. and you cant be a bikie without tatts as much as you cant be a nurse without a watch of sorts! i have a tattoo that you can see when i stretch my arms out. its on my inner bicep. havent been spoken to about it. so its all good. i dont know i think they're are worse things in nursing than tattoo's. like some nurses' not being able to speak english for one.

Addressing physicians
all doctors are Dr. except surgeons who are Mr. or Ms. anethesists are doctors too. ive never called a doctor "dr so and so" always first name. ive never spoken much to consultants, but those that i have ive called them bu their first name. although.. i have noticed that the residents and registrars call their constultant.. or surgeon "Mr. last name" and they were good buddies.. so i gather they perfered that.

Div 2 to Div 1.Worth it? Really??
if its what you want to do, do it. the course is fine. the most challenging part was trying to work for cash and do clinicals at the same time. i was exhausted during those periods. but study wise.. the content of whats presented is not overlly challenging, just read lots. too easy. do i think its worth it? well maybe more scope of practice and increased room to climb the professional ladder.. and i have no idea about pay...but other than that... div 1 or div 2. doens't really matter in the end? your doing the same type of stuff.. especicially if your medication endorsed. hope your happy with your decision but div 1 is certainly not unobtainable. you can do it :)

Future grad
haha donuts. no one replied! well ill reply. for what its worth. you probabaly have already made up your mind about st. vee's. i applied there. it was my second prefrence. i didnt get it in the end. but the interview was a group interview. i did a clinical placement there, twas really nice. i liked hte idea of the 24hr gym mainly. that was why i wanted ot go there.. and i like fitzroy alot too.. hmm... and about paramedics. maybe 2 year post grad? the course is three.. and you ussually get a year or two off if you enter as a graduate.. and you might get some exemptions in A&P and stuff.. so myabe even 1. lots of people do that.. i dont think its as essy to get a job though if you go down that path! peace

Post Graduate Studies
Im seriously thinking about doing a post grad diploma in paediatric nursing practice next year! appictions open in a coulpe of days. Would anyone recommend further education? Pretty much.. it "might" look good for one day in the next 5 - 10 years when i go for a management job in a paediatric ward at a costal hospital and live my life surfing and drinking beer. But thats about it.. i might become a clinical nurse specialist quicker or a charge nurse. but you can do these things without dishing out 12grand that you don't have.. so im just wondering. anyone else's thoughts?

mobile phones and hospitals

Rich nurses?
oh my goodness!! im a nurse (an RN to the forum member that asked) why would i say that we are overpaid? i was simply saying that alot of people have the conception (misconception in my books) that nurses are well off. in another thread someone said the pay is decent. i thought this must be a US thing. 68 grand a year for an aussie nurse? must be a manager and/or experienced nurse, clearly non victorian nurse with salary packaging and maybe a gross income estimate also. and definatly not a base income. must factor in shift allowances and weekend penalty rates. i really hope i havent offeneded any of you, just found it strange. and clearly im not jelous of anyones pay.. like ive said in previous posts.. no one (including me) i know enters nursing "for the money" its ridiculous to think we're well paid. HOWEVER, i made this thread thinking that in the USA nurses must be well paid becuse so many forum members have mentioned that its not a bad living and some have put their incomes on the net which seemed at the time to be quite well off. prior to considering the cost of living in each state differing and so forth and so on. i hope ive made myself clear and dont further offend anyone. cheers!

Starting Div 2 scared....
hey crazy nat! dont be scared about doing your div 2, are you doing it in sunbury? i wish you all the best. i havent done the course myself, but i know if you do the work on time and ask lots of questions in your clinicals.. you'll be sweet :) james

Rich nurses?
haha it seems i did get slammed. maybe it was late at night.. but i made the thread from other peoples thoughts in other threads. Things like "im choosing nursing, because its what i want and its well paid" thats not entirely quote on quote but the jist. And from that i think that people in other countries other than australia must get paid well. i hope i didnt offend you by saying you were "overpaid" i understand that nurses could never be overpaid, im just speaking in terms of the wages of other countries. You will never here that nursing is well paid in australia. and if you do they are a fool. im not poor.. but if i wanted to be payed well, i would have been a tradesman, or stuck with engineering when i finished high school. nursing... simply isn't well paid. i get paid $19 an hour. the exhange rate is like 80 cents to aus$1 and the cost of living in melbourne... well. lets just say i could never buy a house on my income alone. but i am comfortable.

Is nursing like...
hey, after watching scrubs and house.. i wanted to know.. do nurses exist in the US? Or do the doctors take obs and give meds.. like they do in house? if so.. what do nurses do? haha.. im not being sarcastic.. i know you guys do the same as aussie nurses.. but where the hell do these sterotypes come from? its just a disgrace.. doctors dont hang out on the wards with the odd nurse walking past every 10 mins.. at least not at my hosptial!
-
Rich nurses?
you guys are mostly from the USA? I just glanced over a thread and it seems you guys are ridculously overpaid? In Australia.. nursing is by far not a well paid job. Its maybe just average. My step dad who was a traffic controller - held a sign that said "slow" and "stop" on the flipside got paid $10 an hour more than me.. i kid you not.

IV Administration of drugs...KVO vs numerous saline flushes??
5ml/hr (2ml/hr for neonates) of 0.9%naCl to keep the vein open is pretty standard in my workpplace. i guess it doesnt really matter in the end, just alot easier for us and the patient in the end.

A lonely journey?
Hey murses, Anyone else feel it can get a bit lonely being a male nurse? I dont like to use that term at all.. but am refering to males in nursing, so i guess it fits? All day long i hang out with really nice women, who totally don't understand me. I have mates who are all doing uni degrees like enginerring, law, archirtecture. And here i am.. doing something that i don't even like to admit to. its all feeling a little lonely to be honest. dont get me wrong. nursing is great. male nurses are great. if your considering it, you should totally do it. i just think its me, id probably be like this if i stuck with engineering when i finished high school. i think im just torn between feeling inadequte cos of my job and not having a real good support network other than the misses. hmmmm...
