What about working in a clinic or a doctor's office? The hours would be good and you would work little or no weekends and no holidays. Also the patient's wouldn't be as acute. just my 2 cents.

My co-worker had a patient once and she had to put a FOley catheter in her. When she went to put it in the women said "It's been awhile since anyone's been down there and I'm not gonna lie, it feels pretty good." :uhoh21: My co-worker said she had to bite her tongue really hard to stop herself from laughing.

I leave my work shoes at work. My dog was sick once and ended up having pancreatitis. When I read the lab reports it said C. diff was in her poop!:uhoh21: That's when I decided that my work shoes will never come home with me. I can't believe I gave my dog c. diff! Has anyone ever heard of that?

I was in the same position you are before I graduated. I couldn't sleep or eat, I was up for days straight because I was so stressed out. My preceptor in Role Transition told me I would never make it and I graduated second in my class. I was scared to get a job and considered being a pharmacy tech for the rest of my life but here I am 2 years later, a sucessful nurse! it took a little while but with time you'll be fine. Always ask questions and take your time. You came this far, don't give up without trying and know you are not the only one that's been there.

I had a coworker once go to put a catheter in a patient one night when we were working and she got everything set up and went to advance the catheter. I think I would of peed myself.:p

I would do it in a heartbeat. I already volunteer my time for a local charity and would do it for free for those that need it on the side. Of course I need my money so I would have to keep a job that pays. Once I am married though, I probably wouldn't need my paycheck since my bf makes more as a union electrician than I do.

I think you did the right thing and I don't even have kids. A fever that high can bring on a seizure which yes is a medical emergency. Someone else mentioned meningitis which can cause death in hours like they said. I would have left two because I am sorry but my family comes first. I would of followed protocol and made sure my patients were taken care of before I left. I think you also mentioned that you were working under an Rn? Then why couldn't she take over the rest of your duties while you tended to your emergencies?

I'm just curious if the feeding bag was labeled with the patient name, date, time, started, etc. Where I work we label the bag and the tubing and the same goes for IV fluids and piggybacks. This might of helped the situation some. As for the day nurse running to the supervisor and snitching, I personally feel she handeled it wrong knowing that her coworker is a new nurse.

I unfortunately experienced this garbage when I was student during my role transition class. It was horrible and my heart goes out to anyone that experiences it. I would be standing in the hall getting meds. ready or priming IV tubing and I would look up and most of the nurses and techs would be standing in a group laughing at me. My preceptor asked what realm I wanted to go into and every response I gave her, she told me I would never make it. She made me feel like poop and I really didn't think I would follow through with my dream. I even graduated second in my class and I still didn't want to pursue it. It was terrible. Thanks to really supportive family and friends I did follow it and It has been a year and a half and I have never been happier. I work with really great people and I do not see this crap at my hospital anywhere. My advice is to go somewhere else and know that one day the bullies will get what they deserve.

I admire JW for having such a strong faith base and sticking to their beliefs. I would hope I would be like that if it came down to it. I do pity the children that lost their mother, but unfortunately it wa the mother's choice. Someone mentioned before if JW are mostly vegetarian because the rule says they can not eat animal blood. That is a very good point because their is blood in red meat so I wonder if they abstain. Does anyone know the answer to this question? I'm curious.

Always do this to everyone, even when standing in line at the store. My boyfriend told me I have a sick mind because of it. I'm always pressing on his veins. Also my dad has huge cord veins and wouldn't even need a tourniquet and I sit there and think would it would be like to practice putting a 14 gauge into one of them. I'm obsessed with veins. Someone mentioned that they dream of an IV when they are hung over. I do that all the time! My dad (who is a fireman) and my boyfriend's friends who are paramedics said they do it all the time when they come into work hung over. They bolus themselves really quick and then feel all better.

I know I would possibly want to be in the room with my loved one but only with the staff's permission and as long as I'm not in anybody's way or to big of a distraction. I know I would be one of the first to get out of the way if anything goes wrong. I would hate to be the one that caused a negative outcome for my loved one because I did not get out of the way in time.

I would say definitely try a tech job while going through school. I really love my job and when I first graduated I didn't think I was going to follow through with it. I was terrified. The job is really rewarding. I especially love the patients that everyone says are grumpy or grouchy. I always manage to get them to warm up to me. I had one man who was an old grouch and I had him three nights in a row. I turned to him when I was in his room and said "Yippee, I'm back tonight, isn't that exciting to you?" He was laughing so hard. Things like that really make me love my job. I was going to be a pharmacist but I am so happy I didn't because I was absolutely miserable as a pharmacy tech in the end. I is so rewarding to help people when they are most vulnerable. I also had a weak stomach but like my dad said (who is a firefighter and has seen a lot crazier things than I have), you realize these people need you and you put your fears aside to help them and make them more comfortable.

I'm a new grad (well I've been a nurse for a year) and I have no problem helping my CNA's and getting my hands dirty and neither do any of the other 50 people I graduated with. If anything I notice the older, more experienced nurses will let their patients sit in poop while they run wild looking for the techs to do all their dirty work. I see it all the time.

Hi guys, This is my first time posting a new thread and I really need advice. My dad had melanoma of the eye 25 years ago for which he had his eye removed and now has a prosthesis (sp?). They told him if the cancer ever came back it would come back in the liver most likely. Well now it's 25 years later and my dad has lost a lot of weight (about 30 to 40 lbs. over 5 years). Also his liver is enlarged and hard. I felt it myself and it feel s like a big muscle. He has no ascites, jaundice, weakness, fatigue, or fever. I am just scared that it may of come back. He has pain sometimes. His appetite is good. I made him go to the doctor yesterday and they drew blood and he is going to have a CT monday. I'm sorry but I can't wait that long. He went to a doctor at the hospital I work at and they drew blood and when I got to work naturally I looked up his lab results (screw hippa when it comes to my father's health and he also asked me to do it). All of his lab results are normal except his alkaline phosphatase which was 202, his RBC which was 4.17, HGB 11.7, HCT 34. The doctor said he thought my dad had anemia because the conjuntiva of his eye was really pale. So I looked up alkaline phosphatase online and the nih.gov website said that lab value would be elevated in anemia also. I got really excited and called my mom and dad and told them I think he was fine and didn't have cancer because of his blood work. I have been doing extensive online research all night between caring for my patients because I am so nervous. I also think he may have gallstones because I seen that that lab could be elevated with those also and he does have pain sometimes. Sorry this is so long but what I really want to know is if his other blood tests (like ALT, AST, albumin, protein, and electrolytes) would be abnormal if he had a malignancy. They are all within normal limits and I would think that if my dad had liver cancer all of his blood work (especially his ALT, AST, and albumin) would be out of whack. He discovered this hardening 5 years ago and went to a doctor then who did blood tests and they were normal so she said not to worry about it. It's been bothering him so he decided to go to the doctor. Don't you think after 5 years if it was liver cancer, he would be jaundice or have ascites or have other symptoms? I am really sorry this is so long but I am really worried because I need and love my dad and do not want him to have liver cancer. I deal with a lot of liver cancer patients and they look worse than my dad because of the jaundice. I am going to try to talk to my hepatology attending in the morning if I see him. That is so sad that this poor woman can not get any type of assistance. These are citizens that have been paying taxes their whole working lives. Why is it so easy for those that haven't worked a day in their life to get govt. assistance? Those that won't lift a foot to try to make their lives better? And I'm not talking about the disabled or those that use it as stepping stone until they are independent, I am talking about the able-bodied people that expect all the freebies from the government. I wish there was more of an equal ground when it came to our citizens needing health care coverage.

Isn't it wierd how mother's just seem to know when you need them even if your not at the same place? I was walking home from a Cubs game one night with my friend and we found out the buses stopped running. So naturally I had been drinking and I tried encouraging my friend that we could walk all the way home. (About 8 or nine miles) My mo called 5 minutes later and said do you need a ride home and I was like, no we could walk. She wouldn't have it and picked us up. That night there was a few rapes so I guess I'm lucky my mom has such strong intuition.

I have another non nursing story and since everyone seems interested in all things involving ghosts and spooky occurences, I will go ahead and post it. I was babysitting one night when I was about 13 for one of my neighbor's friends. The little girl was 5 years old and had beenplaying outside earlier in the day. The family never used the front dooe and it was always kept locked. When the little girl came in for the night, I locked the back door and gave her a bath. I put her to bed and then went and sat at the kitchen table to do my nails. I had my headphones on very softly in case she called out for me. All of a sudden I heard a loud slamming sound so I took off my head phones and called for the little girl. She was alseep in bed so I looked out the back door thinknig maybe her mom came home early and I heard the garage. The way the house was set up they had a back porch area and the back door was on the side of the room (sorry it's kind of hard for me to explain how it's set up). When you looked out the kitchen window you could see the back door and when I looked out the window I could see the back door was open a crack. That freaked me out because I distinctly remember locking that door. I couldn;t see anything on the back porch because it was pitch black. I ran in the living room and the front door was wide open!!!:uhoh21: Mind you, they never use that door! At that point I really freaked out. I called a friend's mom because mine wasn't home (this was before cell phones) and she called a neighbor for me who came over and checked out the house. No one was there and the little girl was fine, she was fast asleep. To make matters worse, after the neighbor left I sat there watching tv and the girl's mom had the lights on a timer so they went off and stayed off after a certain time. That was the last time that I babysat ever.

I haven't personally experienced anything myslef while at work but 2 of my coworkers have. Last year a few people died in one of the rooms on the south side of our floor within a close time frame and one of my coworkers swears one night she seen a short, dark blob go running out of 62 bed two into the room across the hall from it. Another coworker told me that after a woman had died her and another one of our coworkers were cleaning her up and the nurse that had the deceased patient asked them to close the door and when my coworker went to close the door, she said she felt resistance and the nurse felt it from the other side also, like the door didn't wan to close. Of course it works fine now and always did before that. Some non-hosptial related stories I have mostly include deceased family and friends coming to let me know that they are okay after they have died. I had three seperate dreams of my grandpa that I remember vividly to this day. We were very close. The one I remember the most and that affected me the most was one where I was at his wake and I was sitting on the couch in front looking at his casket when a phone rang. My grandma told me it was for me so I turned my back to take the call. It was my grandpa on the phone telling me to turn around. I turned around and he was standing in front of me out of his coffin. He hugged me and told me that he was doing fine and missed us. I then said to him, "but grandpa, aren't you supposed to be dead?" And he said, "Yeah, I guess I am." He said it in a really sad voice and then turned around and got back in his coffin. Made me really sad. Another story I have is one of a friend of mine that died in a drunk driving accident in high school. I was best friends with her sister growing up before they moved away to the suburbs and switched schools. About two weeks after she died she came to me in a dream and told me she was doing alright but that her sister was not. She then asked me if i could please call her sister and have her come stay with me for the weekend to get her out of the house (they shared a room when her sisiter was alive). I felt kind of dumb calling her house but I was compelled to do it. My friend wasn't home but her mom answered and I told her all about it and her mom found such comfort in knowing that Tiffany was alright and was reaching out to her sister. Her sister came over the following weekend and we had a fun, relaxing weekend. One last thing that freaked me out and then I'm done (sorry this is so long). My boyfriend at the time's sister claimed she could speak in tongues. I didn't believe her and my ex said she should do it to me. They told me how she did it to her other brother's girlfriend and she was crying and really amazed. So I let her "speak in tongues" over me and she told me that my grandpa was in heaven and was doing good. She also told me that he was a police officer when he was alive (she didn't know that before) and how many brothers he had (didn't know that either) and other things she wouldn't of known. She told me that my uncle Solly (one of my grandpa's brothers) was a gruff man when he was alive (he was!) and he wasn't in heaven yet because not enough people prayed for him here on earth. You bet you butt I prayed for that man every night from that night on. I don't know if she was full of it but some of the things she knew, there was no way she would of known without me telling her.
