In triage the other day. Registration came running to me saying this pt was having a seizure. I run to the area this lady was sitting. The seizure pt greets with a, "hello..how are you." I then bring her into my triage booth per wheelchair. NURSE: Ma'am, what's bring you to the ED today. **I begin taking her VS** PT: I have been having seizures in my neck and my right arm for the past 2 days on and off. **Pt head immediately begins shaking back and forth violently...whilst looking at me** NURSE: OK, are you having a seizure right now? PT: "Yes", **Head still violently thrashing in my triage booth while talking to me** "but it is just my neck right now because you are taking my blood pressure" NURSE: "So you are not having a seizure in your arm because of the BP cuff." PT: "yes" NURSE: "Ma'am, if you can control when this happens..why don"t you just not have one at all?" I check in the computer what the MD orders on the pt, and I see a psych consult. LOL

-28y Male weighs 780lbs. MD order: "ambulate with assistance." -Resident admitting pt with abdominal pain, with no significant medical hx... Resident: "Can you give the pt 8mg Dilaudid IVP STAT" Nurse: "EIGHT mg dilaudid IVP?!?" Resident: "Yes, STAT." Nurse: "ummmm, NO, I don't know if that is compatible with life...how about 1 or 2?" Resident: **Walks away to speak with his attending** Resident: Ok, give 1 mg dilaudid IVP...and I meant 8mg PO before. Nurse: sure.

Chapped lips-md informed pt there is no medical strength lip balm and to pick up some chapstick at walgreens Male pt insists on seeing the MD because when he urinates "his urine makes bubbles in the toilet" pt dc'd home and informed it is normal. Laceration to member from dry humping bed while having a wet dream. small cut noted to member. given wound care dc instructions and dc'd home. mother brings 1 year old daughter with complaints of "hard clumps in nose" evaluation reveals boogers in child's nose. attempted to dc pt. mother throws fit. md informed mother that hospital staff will not pick her daughter's nose. instructed to apply warm moist rag to nose to loosen boogers. 21yo female to ED per EMS c/o no BM x 1 day. 16g IV inserted.. and labs drawn per md order. dc'd home with negative studies, informed people don't have bms everyday and to try something OTC if problem persists. I have more, but it is past my bedtime.

I have been a RN for 4 years now. I've Spent over a year in telemetry, and the rest of the time in the ED working as a full time staff nurse. I am getting burnt out with this job. Agency nursing has been an interest of mine for some time, I just don't know where to start. I am a 27 year old single guy with no kids, and people are tell me that working as a "FT staff nurse" at this time in my life is a waste. My schedule often sucks, and my pay checks are comical at best. I've recieved a total of 85 cents raise in the four years I have been employed at this hospital. ($22.52 increased to $23.37/hour) I live right outside of New Orleans, LA (approx 8 miles away). Any advise is much appreciated. -Where do I start? (Do I just google Louisiana agencies)? -Should I expect better schedules? (I am a Saint's season ticket holder and would like to attend some games this year) lol -Any idea what kind of hourly pay is to be expected with my experience? -Really any information you care to share with me is appreciated. I have one year experience on a telemetry unit. I am ACLS ceritfied. I applied for an open night shift ER position and recieved a call for an interview in a few days. I am going to start working on a resume for a good impression. Any advise for me? Anything is appreciated. Thanks to all.

i have 4, 5 tops during day shift. we are short staffed with CNA's, so we give total care alot of times, but no way would i work at your hopital lol. no way.

Hello everyone. I have been working as an RN for almost 9 months now. I am really becoming stressed out. The only experience I have is on the unit i am currently working on. It is a telemetry unit. My question at this time is about patient turnover. I don't know if it is just my unit or what, but i sometimes discharge and admit 2-3 people per shift. It really puts me behind. Completing all that charting is soo time consuming. If I have no distractions/complications i can complete a discharge in 45 minutes...new admit maybe an hour. It is not that I am slow, the process at my hospital just takes that long. So best case scenario, if I have 2 D/Cs and 2 admits, that is 3.5 hours of work dedicated to mostly paperwork. I sometimes feel like I am neglecting my other patients because of this. Now my questions is: Do most other units have turnover ratios that high? Is the process of DC/admitting that time consuming everywhere? thanks in advance.

i just had my first interview and it seemed to go pretty well. the nurse interviewing me told me should would contact me at the end of the week. a few minutes after i got home i recieved a call from her. she asked me if i could come in tomorrow to observe change of shift report, and observe the way things work on the unit. she assigned me to one nurse in particular and asked me to acompany her with her patients. now, does this happen often? she didnt tell me i had the job..... if this is common, what does it usually mean? also, she complimented me on some questions i asked her today. she told me to bring some more questions for tomorrow. anyone have any good questions i can ask the staff? i just want to make a good impression, so any input is appreciated. thanks everyone.

wow, those are some great stories. they are the complete opposite of the most of the research i have gathered. how have these experiences affected your profession?

i have been researching for weeks, this one small topic is the only thing holding me back. i graduate real soon...if i can complete this dang paper. someone please help me!!! i am getting so nervous. time is running out.

i have done much research on this topic, and i have discovered the advantages and disadvantages to the patient, the family, and the staff. i do have a question that i feel some of you more experienced members may be able to help me out with. what makes this topic important to nursing as a profession?? how has the nursing profession been effected?? and what is the impact of this subject as it relates to health care in the US?? ladies and gents...i have been searching this topic for weeks. there is no journal articles that discuss the impact of this topic on nursing as a profession. this is something that i know many of you have experienced in your profession as a nurse. i graduate in 2 months....and if i can get any opinion on this....i will be forever gratefull. thanks everyone.

Hello everyone. In just a few short weeks I am going to begin my last semester of my RN program. I am getting nervous, and motivated at the same time. I am here because I have a confession to make, and i need to fix some mistakes I have made. Since I started school, I have never really felt motivated. I am beginning my last semester, and I got here by procrastinating, last minute cramming, and good test taking strategy. I have made the grades, but I dont think that I have learned everything that should have learned. To add to the fact that I am a worthless, slacking, procrastinator of a student, I have been out of the med surg unit for some time now. With the program I am in, I have taken mental health, maternal health, and PEDS, since my last semester ot Adult nursing. My last semester is Adult2. I feel so out of practice with this. I am here to ask you all for some help. I dug myself in a hole, and I can use any assistance i can get. I figure the best thing i can do is start memorizing things i should already know. I am going into Adult 2. what thing should be common knowledge at this time. anything you all can throw out to me to prepare for my last semester is so greatly appreciated. i began making note cards of some basic lab values that i dont have memorized. please help me out, i want to do things right. thanks so much for any help.
