Staff RNs in LTC
I am moving to Ft. Myers area the end of the week and am an RN. I have always loved geristrics. May I ask where you work? I have always enjoyed the one on one with the residaents and wouldn't care for adm. I don't believe you lose all skills. You become very good at assesment of pt. You get to know these pts, and you will know if something is not right. Give yourself more credit. Elderly pts have so much to share and are so appreciative, keep up the good work. Don't listen to everyone else and do what you like best. Thay need you. K.Z.

Overdoses...
I can understand those that are upset by some of the posts. The attempt of suicide is something that should be taken seriously. It doesn't matter if it is because of a boyfriend or whatever, it is still a cry for help. It appears that many nurses feel this is attention seeking behavior, and your right. Usually these are young people who haven't matured enough to cope with problems in their lives. The statement " NARCAN IS FUN " even bothers me. Hopefully your children or grandchildren will never be in a situation such as this, for I would worry about the sincereity of the care they receive.

Anxiety and low self-esteem
I think nursing is just one of those professions where your always wondering "did I do the right thing." Its true that the learning is never ending, and that is one of the reasons I enjoy it. I also ask for other's opinions if I'm not sure. I just do the best I can, what more can I do? Wish you the best, and pat yourself on the back for caring the way you do.

Night shift vs. Day shift...

Do you have to be "super smart" to be a nurse?
I have always been interested in anything medical. I feel you should have a passion for what you are doing. No, I don't feel you have to be super smart. You do need to work hard in school. I put my studies first and everything else second. You have to really want it. PS. Your cat looks just like mine!

Are you ashamed of being a nurse?
Yes, I am proud to be a nurse, and I worked hard to get here. As the other posters pointed out, there are issues with adm. But there isn't anything I'd rather do at this time in my life. I just pray that in the future there is more support and appreciation for the hard work we do. I have never regretted my choice of nursing.

What Freaks You Out?
We had a lady with LE OA. well when the day nurse went to change her dressing the wound was full of magots. I used to hate doing that treatment because you had to check carefully to make sure they weren't back!

Terribly rude orientation
Thanks to all of you for your responses. This actually happened some years ago. There was this nurse and she was just a -----. When we went to dinner and sat at the table with other employees, she totally ignored me. I would say something and not even get a response. There were other incidents that happened, but I'll spare you. I think I am a stronger person at this time in my life, and I honestly don't think I would take this abuse again. Well, I have an interview tom. at a hosp. and I'm thinking again about how horrible that orientation went. I left that orientation and went back to LTC. Now I've decided to try hospital nursing once again. I pray I don't have to deal with personality flaws to that extreme. Fab4fan...I can understand your feelings also. I do not like orientating new nurses since I'm usually so busy, but I would never treat a peer in that manner.

Terribly rude orientation
Have any of you fellow nurses began a hospital nurs. position and found that alot of the staff were just plain rude and ignored you? Let me hear some of your personal horror stories, and I'll tell you mine. Talk about nurses eating their young!

Sick at work, AND disappointed!
Wendy, so sorry to hear of your awful experience in ER. I have had a few waits there in the past also, and it wasn't pleasant. Hope your feeling better soon. take care of #1.

too much stress in Med -Surg?
Hey, all you dedicated med-surg nurses. How do you like your jobs, and what is difficult about them? Are you treated with respect for the hard work you do or are you taken for granted which is so common these days. How difficult is it to work the 7/70 scedule? Given a choice where would you like to work, and what type of nursing would you most like to do?
