The IV pump is only going to control the rate of fluid that is actually going through the pump. If you connect another IV fluid to the IV after the pump, the pump does not control the rate of that fluid. Pumps will only control the rate when the IV tubing is in the pump and programmed.

It is ok for the nurse to give sodium bicarb. Sometimes it is given IV push, and other times it is hung as a drip...depends on what it is needed for. I have never heard of the nurse not being able to give it.

Why are you adding insulin to an iv bag?

It is ok to put a PIV in on an angle. Sometimes that is your only option. As long as the catheter is in the vein in the direction of blood flow back to the heart, you are good.

There are schools in Chicago that have school based NPs.

It will limit your options if you say you will only work ortho. How about expanding it to tauma/ortho or med/surg/ortho? By specifically limiting yourself to ortho units, you will not have many options for places to go. Ultimately though, you do have the decision to tell the travel company that you only want to work ortho units.

Seek the help you need. Don't worry about future jobs...it will not play a role in the hiring process. You would be very surprised by how many nurses actually take antidepressants.

After an ablation, you will be on a cardiac monitor until you are discharged. Plan for flat bedrest for 4-6 hours post procedure and frequent checks of your groin sites and pedal pulses. I worked as a travel nurse when I moved to a new city. I had no idea which hospital I wanted to work at, so I used the travel company to check out hospitals. I completed a contract at one hospital and knew I did not want to work there. Then I took another contract in the same city but different hospital. I worked at that hospital for 8 months as a traveler before I actually signed on as permanent staff. It worked out well for me, and the hospital did not have to pay extra to my agency.

I don't know for sure, but my guess it that is the accelerated program for students who already have a bachelors degree in a non-nursing area. Have you found that program on their website?

Where are you getting your information that many nurses do not use standard precautions?

Try not to worry about it. More nurses have depression/anxiety than you would ever guess. You are not alone.
