Things You'd Like To Tell Visitors . . . . and get away with it
If your daughter is hungry enough to demand waffles for breakfast, then she doesn't belong in here. BTW, the Waffle House is down the street......

Things You'd Like To Tell Visitors . . . . and get away with it
Don't berate me, as I am trying to complete central line care on your loved one, who is terminally ill. I am just trying to do my job. And, don't get an attitude, when I honestly tell you that I do not know the answer to every question you ask me about her condition. And, if you want to report me for telling you that I am not a doctor, when you demand to know "why don't I know?", be my guest. The phone's right over there. You want my supervisor's phone number? Better yet, why don't you just leave? You are not only visibly upsetting the person you "claim" to care so much about, but are also interfering with her care.

Railroaded at work
I agree with the others. Give your two-week notice and move on. Better to resign than be fired.

Will you work during a Pandemic?
With everything that is currently going on with my own family, I would have to respectfully decline. I wouldn't be here today if it weren't for them. Consequently, I will always be there for them...come hell, mud, flood or H1N1.

Abusers Win
That stinks. I thought companies were supposed to have non-retaliation policies in place. But, (like everything else), rules are put in place only to be broken by those who could be affected by a potentially negative outcome....

Need Advice on Management of Penrose Drain/Ostomy Bag
My BIL underwent radical cancer surgery two weeks ago, which included a urostomy. He also has a Penrose drain with an ostomy bag for management of drainage from one of the surgical sites. My sister is having no problems with the urostomy. However, the Penrose drain and ostomy bag is giving her fits. No matter how small she cuts the opening to accomodate the drain or how well she cleans and preps his skin or any amount of adhesive will stop it from leaking. His HH nurse even tried using a special type of adhesive tape to seal and window it. Nothing works. Within hours of changing the ostomy, it has leaked through his clothes and onto the bed. She is becoming frustrated and exhausted from constantly having to wash and change sheets, clothing, etc. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

"Fired for NO Reason"
Who knows? The woman who chewed me up and spit me out actually had the gall to tell me (among other things): "This way we won't have to worry about you not showing up for work again". Excuse me? Did I not request and get those days off approved in advance? She says this as the supervisor who approved my days off sits there like a piece of furniture. The HH nurse who is caring for my BIL told my sister they are looking for help. I'm calling them tomorrow. Middle finger extended as the door closes behind me.

"Fired for NO Reason"
Case in point: Many of you may be aware of the recent illnesses of my sister and BIL. My sister was hospitalized in early April with a life-threatening flesh-eating bacterial infection. I asked for (and received) permission to take off two days to be with her. While she was hospitalized, my BIL, who has been undergoing treatment for kidney and bladder cancer during the past year, was told by his Urologist that the tumors in his bladder had returned with a vengeance, invading the wall and he was going to require radical cancer surgery.....ASAP. Knowing this and how sick my sister was, I immediately went to my supervisor and told her I would need to take off two more days (May 1st and 4th), to be with her the day of his surgery and those first two critical days afterwards. This request was also approved by my supervisor....and without question. Fast forward to today. My BIL is home from the hospital and is having a slow and difficult recovery. My sister, who still has not completely recovered from her own illness is exhausted and overwhelmed with the demands of his care. I am at work, and get summoned to my supervisor's office. It is there that I am told by her boss that if I continue on FT status and have to be out one more day to take care of my family (or whatever the reason), "I (and I am quoting her verbatim): am going to lose my job". I could not believe what I was hearing. She then demanded that I guarantee that I would not miss one more day of work "to be out with my family" during the next six months. I told her that I could not. I knew I was being set up like a lamb for the slaughter, and that's when she told me I was going on PRN status effective next Monday. My son was incredulous, when I told him what had happened. "I don't understand that, Mom", he said, upset. "That was like making you promise that a meteor is not going to hit the earth tomorrow". My BIL (God bless him...and I am crying, now), said: "Sis, you got your hours cut on account of me". My sister was equally devastated: "This is all my fault". Loyalty? HA! (ugly laugh). That is Corporate America's war cry for total and unquestioned obedience. They want to control and own you....in return for a measly paycheck. Looks like I am going to be job hunting....again. Good riddance to bad rubbish!

the "dream" has come to an end
I commend you on your decision to pursue an alternate career path. Had I known 28 years ago what I now know, I would have done the same thing. Less than two months into my new job as a nursing supervisor, I was told yesterday that due to "budget constraints", one of my nurses is being let go, and the other is going to have to "take ownership" of the Clients who live near her. If she refuses, then I am going to wind up being responsible for every Client that we currently serve...in addition to all the new referrals as well as my responsibilities as a manager. I should have known something was up earlier, when the woman who made this decision told me, smiling: "You're going to need to learn some 'time management skills'". What she really meant was: "You're salaried, therefore we can do anything we want with you, so suck it up". I was told about all this within minutes after she made a hasty retreat back to her Ivory Tower in her luxury SUV. Hell, I wish I had a car! I just looked at my Manager and remarked sarcastically: "Happy Nurses' Week, eh?" I didn't care. This was the final straw in my career as a nurse. Period. I told my sister last night that one way or the other, I am going to find a way to retire and get out of this business....once and for all. You have your whole life ahead of you, and I wish you every happiness...away from nursing.
