Considering this now. PICU, Peds, School Nursing and Peds Urgent Care. I've always been drawn to psych, but how do you get a position if you don't have any specific psych experience?

Hi, I've worked in Pediatric Urgent Care for 7 years. I also think it depends on the part of the country. I live in the northeast and we have RNs and LPNs and MAs. However, the more southern states have Medics. I'm not sure what the difference is, but I can see how when a nurse is out sick, a few MAs can do their job, just without giving meds.

Hi beachynurse, So, I spoke to them today and they offered me more than $20,000 less than my current salary. Needless to say that is impossible for me to take. I wish it would have worked out, but if something else is meant to be, I suppose it will come along.

I've been an RN (ADN) for 14 years and haven't had even 1 minute to do my BSN. I registered finally and was about to start last month. Once I received the syllabus and noticed it was going to be all group work, I had to drop out. WHAT RN has time to do group work!? I have no time to contact four other people every day and go over things and worry about their grade and worry about them messing up my grade. No way. I was going to squeeze school work in at 1am when I get home from work, if I had some downtime at work, maybe before I go to work in the morning. Forget it. If I'm going to advance my knowledge, I'm going to take Certificate Courses, I'm getting my CPN, tons of CE and learn useful things. I watched my daughter get her BSN. According to her and her friends, the "B" in BSN stands for you know what.......LOL. BTW, I'm 47, not time for nonsense. ?

Can you give an idea on how it was? What, if any topics were heavily focused on? All I know as I'm studying is that I have forgotten so much, I'm petrified of taking it! beachynurse.....that's a big cut, something I would have to consider if I was to accept a position that may be offered to me soon. I love my job in Urgent Care, but I keep feeling like something is missing. What did you do before?

Hi, It all depends on your state and your experience I suppose. You can't compare NYC pay to anywhere else in the country I would assume (except maybe big cities in California I hear). In NYC, I believe the difference between Hospital and Urgent Care nursing is probably $15/hr difference. So, like $45/hr and $60/hr. My best guess? I answered this question about a year ago and I still love Urgent Care, but getting tired of Covid Testing and now we are worrying about Monkey Pox (like what?!), ugh. I am considering school nursing which unfortunately is another pay cut, but we will see. I'm getting older and the years are going quickly, so I want to make as much of a difference in the lives of little people as I can.

Hi, It's been a while, hope all is well if you are working. I worked in the PICU for about 5 years, then did some Home Care and I've been in Peds Urgent Care about 3 years. I'll tell you one thing, the acuity level is not even close. Yes, you'll get anaphalaxsis, asthma attacks, bad lacerations, etc., but guess what? You do what you can do and then send them to the hospital. Mostly you triage, give basic meds, assist the Dr., (You DO still assess and educate and discharge). In some places they do bloods and IVs. Most places do Covid Testing, Strep Tests, Urine Testing, etc. Some, depending on the company will do Flu shots, school physicals (mine doesn't). If you have an MA, they can do EKG's. It's a world of difference. My office is open 12-12 every day, I work 4 10 hour days. Usually the pay isn't close to the hospital as well.

Hi everyone, I have a question for the Pediatric Mental Health Nurses out there. I work in a Pediatric Urgent Care that may, in the future incorporate Behavioral Health into our company somehow and I am so excited. It's been a dream of mine to work in the field and the fact that they are thinking of making it a part of the place I work is a dream. My question is how can I prepare? I'm trying to see if there are Certification Courses I can take, but I see it's really only for FNPs, etc., I'm an RN. Please give me some ideas. My experience is in the PICU, special needs home care and Urgent Care. Thanks!

If you're speaking about the blunt fill needles that you use to draw up meds, then attach the actual needle you're going to inject the patient with, no. Those specifically say they are for filling the syringes only. They are red.

YAY! I'm back to work.....not full hours yet, but almost. We are doing COVID antibody testing. TONS of it. Every day, all day. So, pretty much, I'm a nurse turned phlebotomist. LOL.

Hey, I started straight out of school into the PICU myself 12 years ago and it was NOT easy. I wish I had 6 months of orientation. Don't beat yourself up, BUT definitely ask your co-workers about anything you're not sure of or anything you even think for a second might be wrong. At least for now. PICU is a scary place and the last thing you need to have is a bad infiltrate on a kid or make a wrong decision especially if you thought of it and didn't ask. There has to be a more senior nurse who can help ya out a bit. I was lucky to have great girls to help me. I worked nights (which you should consider), and I haven't worked there in years, but we are still great friends. On my off days, I'd study a bit more on PICU specifically as opposed to general Peds since they require more special care. You'll be fine. Any nursing job takes a long while to get the hang of. PICU is an amazing place to be. Keep going, ask if they have extra learning course if you want. Maybe if some of the nurses don't mind, follow them around and learn everything you can from every patient. Good Luck! ?❤️

Is anyone a Pediatric Psych Nurse on here?

Hi everyone. I have a question to all my Pediatric Nurse friends. I am currently furloughed from my job in Pediatric Urgent Care due to how COVID is thankfully not affecting our little patients. Now, my company is having a rough time right now and I'm not sure when they will recover. Thankfully, I am receiving unemployment. IF they don't recover and take me back full time at full pay before my unemployment ends, I was wondering if anyone has some suggestions on another area of Pediatrics that may be good for me in the interim? I'm not the best at IVs or Urinary Catheters. I have a background in the PICU which I found a little too stressful. Urgent Care is great, but I don't see any Urgent Care recovering quickly after the Pandemic is over. I've always loved Psych, but I feel they won't hire you if you don't have experience, but how do you get that? Anyone work in a "lower stress" area of Peds that might be a nice transition for me for now, or maybe one I might fall in love with? Thanks, hope everyone is safe.

Are any other Pediatric Nurses furloughed during this Pandemic?

I don't know what the SPN course is. All I know is that I'm still sitting here trying to decide what to buy, lol. The books are so expensive. $80 plus $18.00 shipping. Study cards are $50 plus shipping, it's crazy. I've done all the free questions online a few times already. Can you give me information on SPN?

It's not an easy task. I hope it's been figured out by now since it's 2019. I wish I had the time to do that fantastic technique, but I work in Urgent Care and the kids come in one after another and I'm the only RN there. I try to show the parents, but they "feel bad" for their kids, which I understand but I try to explain how dangerous it is if they don't get all the medication. Every time they cry, they breathe in more medication, so we look at it that way.

I'm so glad I saw this. I am literally sitting here on eBay trying to avoid buying expensive study guides. I've been looking for weeks now. I mean I'd imagine it's all the same material, but I'm always afraid I'm not going to know something new that may be on the exam. I will look into this app. Thanks!

Well, here I am! Been back to Nursing full time since last year when I wrote. Had a little bump in the road in May where I thought I made the wrong decision, but I got through it. Urgent Care was a good choice for me because it's not too intense, but boy do you get sick a lot! Lots of Strep Throat, Flu and just plain old colds. I'm back here on allnurses hopefully every day to keep up with what's going on in the Nursing World. My daughter became an RN this summer and started a full time job, so that's exciting too! Thanks for the encouragement!
