  1. Congratulations! This is a very exciting time for you. Do not let any one discourage you with their "horror" stories! Nursing school is what you make of it. Good luck!
  2. I can not say thank you enough! You have provided some very good information for me to consider. Again, thanks and good luck with the rest of your program.
  3. Thank you so much for the information. Just a few more questions that I thought of. Do you feel that the instructors are there to support you, rather than beat you down? Were you taught the skills you needed for clinical or were you left to muddle through them alone? Where were your clinical sites...nursing home, hospital? What are the typical hours you were/are in class? Also, someone else had mentioned there is an abbreviation test and math test first semester that they do not review you on...is that true? We did not have that at Hinds so I'm curious.
  4. I was at NAHC. I just decided to not complete 2nd semester now due to my son being sick all the time in day care. I am not going to try to go back until next August, so I am planning on starting over to refresh my memory since I will be out for a year.
  5. I am looking for some recent experiences with the Holmes CC ADN, Ridgeland program. I attended Hinds recently for a semester and finished with an A, but did not return 2nd semester due to a my child's illness. But when he is older, I am planning on starting over fresh. I don't know if Hinds or Holmes would be a better choice. I honestly thought first semester at Hinds was easy. The instructors were OK and clinical was OK as well. What do current students or recent grads have to say about Holmes? How are the instructors? What are your average grades? What do you think about the clinical experiences? How many instructors teach the program? What were the typical class times?
  6. Take it from me, don't quit! I felt the same exact way and I did quit. I regret my decision, but what's done is done, there's no going back. I have friends that felt the same way and they are now in second semester and feel much more confident with their decision to be a nurse. Good luck!
  7. Yeah, I'm in second semester at NAHC. I know it's easier said than done, but don't worry too much about it. I am sure you will be accepted!
  8. When I got in for Spring 2007, I received my letter on November 17th. I think your chances are pretty good. I made a 20 on the ACT, had A's in A&P I and II and Sociology and didn't have any problems getting in. Good luck, it's going to be rough, but you can do it!
  9. Hi! I am a first semester ADN student at the Allied Health Center. When I applied for entrance into the program for the Spring, the deadline was September 30 and I got my acceptance letter during November. So, roughly it took a month and a half. I would think you would know something by the first of May. The schedule is not too bad. For first and second semesters, lecture is Monday and Tuesday, usually from 8-12. On Wednesday and Thursday, learning lab is from 8-3 most of the time. Friday's change, sometimes 8-12 or 8-3...just depends on what's going on. Clinicals will be on Wednesday and Thursday from about 6:45 - 1:15. Third and fourth semester, is typically the same, except the schedule swaps days. Hinds is not as bad as most people say. As long as you study the outlines, read the chapters and do your assignments, you should not have any problems. Some instructors are more helpful than others, but for the most part they are pretty nice. Good luck!
  10. Count me in! I did go to college after high school, but my parents always told me I didn't want to be a nurse, so I majored in business. Now at 27 with a husband and a 10 month old I am in my first semester of nursing school because I know there is nothing else that I want to do!
  11. Chemistry is not required for most ADN courses in Mississippi. It is generally only required for a BSN. I only had to have A & P I and II and Microbiology.
  12. I know exactly how you feel. I am entering Nursing School in a week and a half, and with all of the negative things that are said regarding nursing, I was really wondering if I made a good decision. I wish more people would focus on their positive experiences as a nurse. Should would help the image of nursing! Good luck with your decision.
  13. Just a suggestion, but rather than throw away all of the hard work you went through becoming a nurse, why not look for a nursing position in a Doctor's Office of some sort. You might not make as much money as you would make in a hospital setting, at least you could still make use of your degree. You didn't make it through nursing school for nothing! Whatever you choose to do, Good luck!
  14. I'm not sure if I can be of much assistance but, I'll try. First, are you planning on becoming an RN eventually by working through the bridge program of LPN to RN? If so, have you thought about looking into Holmes CC's (Ridgeland Campus) night RN program. It takes 2 years to complete, but it's only done 1 or 2 nights during the week and on the weekends. Just a suggestion and you could still teach while going to school. I know this may not be the answer you were looking for, but just thought I would try to offer some insight! Good luck!
  15. I will see my sister-in-law when we go to Philadelphia this weekend so I'll get back to you as soon as possible. Thanks for the advice on how to handle nursing school!
  16. I am so glad I found this thread. I felt like I was the only one who felt this way. I was wondering how every one else was dealing. This makes me feel a whole lot better. Good luck everyone.
  17. Hi! I can't give you first hand experience, but can tell you that my sister-in-law who has been a nurse for about 6 years has worked at all three of the hospitals you have listed. She is currently working at Jeff Anderson and from what I understand she LOVES her job. She works PRN, (but 36 hrs) in the Emergency Room. I will see what I can find out from her and maybe give you a little more insight! I am entering the RN program at Hinds CC in Jackson, MS in about 2 weeks....do you have any suggestions on how to survive and adjust? Thanks!
  18. THANKS! I will get that book ASAP! Good luck with your new job at UMC.
  19. Thanks and congrats to you, Chris85...but, I've been scared since the day I got my acception letter! I have heard about how hard Hinds was, but they just want you to be competent upon graduation and you have confirmed that. Do you have any suggestions or tips that could help prepare for first semester? Thanks a million.
  20. I totally agree with your definition of bed side nursing. What I disagree with is when some one else implied that we should all start out on the med/surg floor doing bed side nursing and then work our way up. The point I was trying to make is that I am not interested in spending much time doing bed side nursing in MED/SURG. It's impossible to believe or think that every one should or will start out with the same interest. It is an individuals right to explore what interests them.
  21. Just from personal experience..I am entering the ADN program in January, there is no other way around the math score. I was told that the only way was to take the ACT once again. I though I might have to take the ACT again, but found out I made the minimum 18. On getting in for Fall 2007, there is no waiting list. Selection is academically determined regardless of how soon your paperwork makes it to them. The selection is based on ACT, GPA, previous degrees, etc. The highest scores get in. Yes, they will add your pre-reqs to your file as you complete them. Hope this helps! Good luck.
  22. I am entering nursing school in January and already know that I do not want to work bedside in Med/Surg for the long term. My heart belongs to babies and children. I know that I want to work in the Well Baby Nursery or in our local Children's Hospital. So, if I am wrong for that, so be it. I agree that if I have a nurse working on/with me, I sure want them to love what they do. Every area is not for every person.
  23. Congratulations deafcricket and 601Wondering! I'm nervous about starting school at Hinds, but I just keep praying that every thing will work out. I am just looking forward to this semester being over so that we can "get this show on the road". I have several friends that have graduated from Hinds, so I know it's possible! All is takes it hard work and lots of determination. I'm looking forward to the orientation/registration on the 15th of November! Good luck!:balloons:
  24. After recently talking with St. Dominic here in Jackson, the pay rate for an RN is now starting at $18.50. So, I can only guess that the pay for an LPN would be about $10-$11 an hour to start.
  25. Thanks for your support! Every little bit helps. This is the first time that I applied to Hinds and I had an overall score of 21 on the ACT...I had an 18 in Math, 21 in Reading and 23 in Science and and 20 in English. I have a previous degree in business so, I have taken most of the other required courses in the program with the exception of English Comp II and Human Growth and Development. I am not aware of any of the ACT workshops, but am sure that you can contact any of the area schools. Good luck! :wink2:
