HindsCC A.D.N. Program spring 09
Hey hun! Im in 3rd Semester ADN Program at the Hinds AHC... There's time where you feel what the teachers are doing are unfair, but its all in good reason.... Just stay on top of studying and reading and you'll be fine. I've made it through without repeating so far..... If you need any help with anything just let me know!

Hinds CC spring09
Just wanted to chime in..... I am currently awaiting my 3rd semester in the RN program at Hinds AHC. There is so much negativity said in regards to Hinds, but I disagree with all of it. Hinds is a very hard program and the instructors do expect alot out of the students. You will spend many nights staying up till 2am and then waking up at 4:30am to get to clinicals... you will study hours on end for a test that you end up failing.... You will have skills evaluations and then unit tests 2 days apart and feel like you are going to pull ALL your hair out... This is the true part, but if you put your mind to it you will pass. You are going to be a nurse. You need to possess the skills to manage your time effectively, to own your mistakes and realize that YOU are doing something wrong if you study hours on end and still fail a test, you dig for the underlying reason as to what you are doing wrong (just like you do with your patients.... you always have to find the underlying reasons... there always is one). All of the hardships Hinds puts you through are for a reason.... when you pass their program i promise you will feel much more confident than the nurses comming out of the "easy" programs. Ok.... here are a few tips to pass Hinds... - NEVER fall behind on your reading assignments - Don't skip class.... lots of tests questions come from lectures - Utilize study groups.... discussion helps you full gain understanding of the information - Do NCLEX questions.... this is the way they test.... the books are expensive, so get a group to meet at the book store and have a study session there - Listen to what they tell you.... and recognize that they know more than you - Accept your weaknesses and find methods to improve them.... use all types of resources - TAKE A BREAK!! Set aside one day where you dont even think about nursing school (trust me) I still have a 3.5 average by following these things and I've never repeated a semester. Good Luck to everyone!!!! P.S. sorry for the rant=) Oh, and to an earlier poster.... Hinds has almost a 100% pass rate on the state boards... the article reflected the HESI which is an exit exam from Hinds RN program...... Just like the facts to be correct

Need some opinions
O.k., I need to vent alittle here... We had our IV check offs today. As far as I know 6 out of the 9 people in my clinical group have failed it so far (not sure of the other 3 since I left before they went). Anyway, the evaluation went like this.... you get your MAR and check it against the physicians orders... then you look up you med for safe dosage, action, contingencies, calculation (dilution and safe admin. rate), and equipment needed. Then you have to draw up your medications and flushes.... Ok, after doing all that you simulate going into the patients room... checking the arm band... allergies.... performing any contingencies...washing hands... putting on gloves... then administering the medication and flushes. The total time to do the procedure is 20min. So far all the people in my group have failed due to time (going over). The reason is because some of the meds giving have to be pushed no less then 5min. then followed by a 5min flush. That in itself takes 10min. The initial flush of 3-5mL must be pushed 0.4mL per 15 sec. soooooo that takes a few minutes... this leaves you with less than 8min to do all the other actions prior to admin. Via the reason we have all ran out of time... After talking with the other clinical groups we found out that the other instructors are only requiring their students to do all the above except they don't have to actually admin their med for the full time. The instuctors just want to see that they push the med say for example 1mL every min. and then they tell them that's good and to go ahead with the next step... So that saves them a ton of extra time to get the produre finished. Anyhow, we all really think it's unfair that we are not giving the same advantage as the other students. We have 2 more trys to get it right before were're booted from the program. The good thing is that we have to do the skill with another instructor next time. That will make it alittle easier, but our grade still drops to a B since we have to go on to round 2. My question is, would you let this slide or would you talk to a higher power about the unfairness of the situation?

Fall Adn-i Need Advice From Newly Accepted Students Or Current Adn Students!
Im at Hinds Allied Health Center. I got in with a 22 ACT and 4.0 grade point average. We're on a point system and you can score up to 20 pts. They base it of the following ACT Composite: Reading Sub Score: Math Sub Score: GPA: Prior degree: In each section you could make up to a total of 4 pts. Like, in math if you made an 18 you got 1 point, 19= 2 points 20-21= 3points, and anything 22 or over got 4 points. Total all the sections up and that's where you were on the list..... They sent out the first acceptance letters for anyone over 10. Then once they Knew who was attending they went down the list. Hope that helped some!! Good luck to you!!!

Anyone else ever wonder if they are making the right decision?
I'm in 1rst semester NS, and there is a varitey of students in my class. Some are going for their 1rst profession and others are on their 3rd. Also, the age gap ranges from 19yrs. old. to 62=) All I can say is, if this is something you really want to do then you should def. do it! Graduating at 42 is young, and 20yrs. is a REALLY long time!!! I know too many people who in there elder years talk about what they could have done and wish they had done....don't be one of them.... Good luck!

I need "Nursing Process" practice questions
Is there anything particular that your having trouble understanding? We just had our Process, Hygiene, Mobility, and Sleep Rest Patterns test last week. Most of the questions would give a situation and you would pick the most appropriate Nursing Diagnosis. Some would have you choose Rationale for situations or Assessment questions. Things like that. It was that easiest of all the tests IMO. Made an A...yipee!!!!

No She/he Did Not!!!
No she didn't.... Met with her completely alert and orientated patient at the nursing home in the a.m. to do vitals, just to turn around in the afternoon to check vitals again and comming running out to the charge nurse to let her know her alert patient was now disoirentated and laying in bed unable to speak. The charge nurse went into the room with the girl and started to laugh. Guess she didn't realize that her "patient" had a roommate. The nurse tried to make her feel better and say that they do look alike...lol, maybe she'll check the wristband in the future!! I make's it that much better b/c this is the one in the group that feels she knows everything, claims she is already a nurse, and always corrects the teacher.....this is only our 5th week in the program....lol....classic!

Ok...I need to get this off my chest...
I respect anyone going to school with children. I know that has to be sooo hard and terrifying. The thing is that your doing it for your family which in my eyes makes you a FABULOUS mother!!! I guess I have to take my own adivice and realize that this butterfly feeling is a good thing. I mean if you never had butterflies than you've never really done anything new, great, and exciting.... However, I am glad that there are more people who feel this way too. Kinda makes you realize that it's normal... Good luck to everyone!!!!!!!!!!!

pay at the state psych hospital?
Most hospitals around here pay new grads $18.50 per hour (not including diff.). I think the state hospital pays alittle more maybe $19.25? However, you should be making much more since you are already working in the field. I know some people who work there and really love their job. Oh, the weather here is CRAZY!!!!! This past week varied with highs from 55-79 degress. the lows are usually 20's-40's. Crazy, crazy, weather. I'm soooo sick right now b/c of the constant change from hot to cold. errrr....
