Hi, I don't get to the computer as often as I would like... You know...a good place to start is with the NY State Board of Nursing...you can find out the number on-line... Umm...NYC will pay you alot more...but that is because the cost of living is alot more...at least tax wise, I guess. Contact the board...I have had to get my license in several states but I do not know how it works between countrys... I have heard alittle about it from other foreign nurses but it may only be a matter of taking the NCLEX...but I am not sure. Good luck...and let us know what you find out... Kate
  2. Hi, I have heard alot about this lately... I am in a RN bridge program...which is ASN... I plan to get my BSN but I also think that with the shortage of nurses these days... the whole thing is unrealistic...they have been saying this on and off for years...threatening to drop a ASN to LPN....but this to me can't realistically "fly"
  3. Hi, I have to say...as one who is going thru. a bridge RN program... The RN is much more technical and as far as pay differences go,,,it seems to be about a $10/hr. difference around here...
  4. On those same lines...I am not a Christian but a Buddhist... I use prayers all the time for others...I do it quietly, tho....I do not feel that it is appropriate to ask a patient if I can pray for them... However, ...I do wear a necklace with a Buddha on it that often invokes questions... Those who want to know about it will ask... I work alot of Correctional and I get questions frequently... I have never asked a patient if I could pray for them...in my practice I "pray" every morning and evening for the "benefit of all beings"...this is very therapeutic...and not intrusive.
  5. As a Buddhist I meditate several different ways...some that take alot of practice for a hyper active person such as myself :) However, one way I recommend for anyone no matter what religion they practice is to purchase one of those nature CDs with the music and animals, esp. birds... Lovely way to relax during the day...for others it may help with sleep at night. I, of course, use malas (beads) with my practice and they also help me to focus during meditation.
  6. Hi, as a Buddhist I meditate on a daily basis...and there are so many ways to meditate...some for better than others...depending on the person... I use my practice before I get out of the car, as well as when I wake up and prior to going to sleep. :)
  7. Hi, I have the same questions... I have been thinking of..perhaps an intergrative approach...and am also interested in specific jobs... The last response was very nice but kind of "vague" Anyone have any advice :)... Thanks:nurse:
  8. Yes, I have to agree with everyone's advice... You can still care but must be firm...they will "peg" the "weaknesses"... The best advice I saw above was "you are your best protector"...know your exits...not trying to make you nervous but keep these things in the back of your head...

  10. I go to Broome because I have heard that Delhi....trys to "wash people out"...alot of other nurses have told me that it is a good school academically...but emotionally tough... Maybe you will have a good story to tell..perhaps it was certain staff members.. I went to a LPN school that was like that...but my RN program at BCC is good...another girl in my class left Delhi and came to BCC for that reason. Our coordinator is very nice...Claire Leikigis...very supportive person! If it wasn't for her encouragement...I may never have actually started on my RN.

Yes! I agree...I am there now... I have heard this of alot of 2yr. programs VS. 4 yr. Nrsg 4 yr programs...tend to focus on theory VS. 2 yr...need to get to the "meat" sooner...alot of info. in a shorter timespan... The best way everyone says is to start with the 2 yr....get the ASN and the better experience...then go for the BSN later...the best of both worlds. I have heard from all the RNs I've talked to ...that there no difference between in job or pay between the two...until you get to the MSN...even then...not always.
  12. Central NY is beautiful but one of the poorest in the state. My neighbor drives an hour everyday (for years)to Cooperstown for somewhere around $12/hr. to work as a mechanic. If he went the other direction...6 miles across the river into Chenango Cnty...we are talking about $8/hr for the same job...the tax rate is still 8.25 or something and the cost of gas can be higher...everything takes longer to drive to...this is rural living...not the good side of it. Great place to live in the Summer...if you save up your money...:penguin:

Hi, it depends on where you live... NYC...pays very well...some areas of Upstate pay very poorly... It depends on the poverty level of the area... Taxes are high no matter where you go...esp. in "the city" (meaning NYC)... Housing/rent...again depends on area... Which part of NYS are you thinking about? Kate
  14. Hi... Eustis is not too far from Gainesville, really...let's say...too far to work, I guess, but a day trip....about 1 1/2 to 2 hours...maybe...depending on traffic. I went to Fruitland Park a few years back to a retreat...which isn't too far from Eutis...not a bad area...
  15. Re: Forensic being like Correctional: There is sometimes a need but for the most part it is not the same... ej. rape does happen there, of course...genetic testing etc. Alot of it is nurse and MD visits, emergencies, chronic care, meds, treatments. We have multiple MDs, pysch.people, HIV counselors, NPs/PAs etc. , as well as religious folks that come in. It depends on the facility.
  16. I was wondering, as well. I am a LPN who is currently bridging to RN... I am in an ASN program right now but am planning on getting my BSN in the near future. Right now I just want to get the RN ... How does the pay scale compare to other types of nursing... I always gravitate to the atypical...Psych, Correctional etc.... Thank you :)
  17. I am in total agreement there!
  18. Ok...you guys are scaring me now...:) We DO have inspections...just not like LTC...nothing is regulated more than LTC...it's up there with the Nuclear Power Industry.. We get Federal, State and Corporate at our place...it's the law...
  19. Palmo replied to Purplish's topic in Correctional
Actually I have to say that the lack of compassion varies...facility to facility...and staff... Another note to add to that....if those who DO show compassion get disgusted and all leave then no one will be left who does. Another note to add: in regard to CO "backbone" there has to be a "happy medium"...working in the Florida State Correctional system is like Texas...that is good in some ways...but I found alot of the staff very nasty and lacking in any compassion....that goes for the way that they treat each other...not all...VS...the jail near Phila. I am at right now....there is more professionalism but the security at this particular place needs alot of work...why can't I get both? :)
  20. Well... I worked there in '98 as a LPN... I'm now working on my RN in Binghamton... Back then I think the RN were making something like $13/hr...well under 20 by a bit, I think. The other problem is that they have a cap...or they did...so even if you have worked there many years..you will only make so much...it's a cute little hospital, tho. I like it better than Fox in Oneonta but those folks make better money than Bassett. The area in general pays very poorly...so poorly that I travel back to PA in the Summer where I make more as a LPN than the RNs make up in Cooperstown....shoot, some CNAs make more down in PA than a RN in that area of NY. I love Cooperstown, tho. and I enjoy spending the afternoon there...esp. when the tourists leave :) I live on the other side of the county from Cooperstown...the housing is cheap but the taxes aren't. I got my land for $15,ooo and built a cabin onto it. I have an electric cooperative so my electricity is a joke...my biggest bill has been $75...on a bad month...I like that part. You can contact me via my e-mail if you would like to: [email protected] Kate (Palmo)
  21. Contact the PA State Board of Nursing... you will find the number on the Internet...
  22. Well, I am in my later forties...I have been going to school part time...and it does seem like it is taking forever...BUT...I have no regrets because it was better to go part time than "no time"... However, if you are young...and are able to do it financially...I say go for broke and get it over with sooner... Good luck...
  23. If you are going to go for nursing...go for at least the associates...diploma nursing is limited unless you already have some experience behind you. I am currently a LPN but am in a RN bridge program right now. I have alot of friends who are RNs...they all say...at least get a degree...these days you really need at least an associates...and someday that may be "passe"...
  24. Yuck...I make that as a LPN in the area... I am currently getting my RN...do they take into account all your years in nursing as a LPN or do they still consider you as a brand new nurse.. Does anyone know?
  25. Is this the On-Line program? I am looking into this already. I am a LPN who is currently in a RN ASN program. When I finish this I am going to continue with my BSN. Drexel offers these on-line and is a respected university. Does anyone have experience with this or any other thoughts?:mortarboard:
