  1. Jason, you may send me and e-mail outside of allnurses. I will PM you. I completed my education at GU in July 2015. Send me an e-mail and we can keep in touch. Dotti
  2. I went to Graceland
  3. I did a post master's FNP and I got federal student loans with no problem
  4. I have a Masters in Nursing Education from Oklahoma University (an online program) and just graduated with a post masters certificate from Graceland University as an FNP. I do not have experience with for-profit schools and acceptance into other programs but I got in the first time I applied at Graceland. Both programs were online and I had a wonderful experience with both. Best of luck!

In the OKlahoma area my experience has been around $30 / hr too for full time with benefits. I know two PAs who get job offers all the time for $150k now that they have some experience. That works out to about $75 an hour full time with benefits and being paid for malpractice, etc. The potential for a six figure salary is much higher with advanced practice. The other thing to consider is job satisfaction.
  6. MK90 have you ever taken the ACT? You do not have to take the pre-reqs at RSU but make sure the courses are equivalent before you enroll. For example, Comp 1 will be the same at each college. However, you can take a chemistry with a lab and without a lab. You probably need the one with the lab. Those are the types of things you have to make sure of. TCC may have a list of equivalent courses (they used to). It is very important to make good grades especially in your science classes in order to get into any nursing school. Get in touch with TCC if that is where you want to get your pre-reqs. They may need an ACT too.

New grads are getting $85 to $90k to start in Oklahoma. $40 to $45 an hour for PRN part time non urgent care. Urgent care $65.
  8. How is it going?
  9. Just checking in with everybody. I am in my adult practicum and only have family practicum left. How is everyone doing?
  10. I found this post a few weeks ago which is well written and very thorough. I am reviewing the Barkley's audio CDs and book over my semester break. See https://allnurses.com/nurse-practitioners-np/passed-ancc-fnp-949017.html
  11. Congratulations! I remember reading these boards and wanting to have that honor of posting I got into NP school. I go to Graceland in KC.
  12. Graceland fits my learning style. I think it is a very good program. Where are your going to go?
  13. My number 1 advice to any potential nursing student is to stay away from the "for profit" colleges like Platt, Breckenridge, etc. They are very bad news. As far as TCC, OU, Rogers state, etc my opinion is that you will get out of nursing school what you put into it. TCC may be the cheapest option I think. You can PM me for more information if you like. I am a nursing instructor. On scholarships, google it or check with a counselor at TCC. They should be able to help you. Or look around allnurses. Good luck! I am proud of you for going to school as a single mom.
  14. I am going to look into the 2 in 1 by HP. I will receive my iPhone 6 Plus within 2 weeks and I found a review of it as a work tool to consider. See http://www.zdnet.com/iphone-6-plus-half-of-a-very-portable-work-system-7000035265/
  15. I go to Graceland University in KC. I use my desktop with the big monitor at home. At one of my clinicals, I get to use their EMR and they even let me have my own desk to chart on so I use that there. At another clinical site they won't let me use their EMR so I take my iPad 2 which is pretty old but it is great for using uptodate and epocrates. I pay for both of those services and it is important for me to get the latest, EBP info. ePocrates (the subscription version) provides differential diagnoses which is important to show your preceptor what your differentials quickly. Subscribing to these two services also shows my preceptors I am serious about learning and using the latest information.
  16. Thank you for all of the information. I am going to copy and paste it into a word document for easy reference.
  17. How is everyone doing? I haven't been on allnurses much lately. PM me if you want to talk about preceptors in Oklahoma. I am working on my peds clinicals now. I think Graceland is a very good school.
  18. I started Graceland in Summer of 2013. I am now in my Pediatric clinicals. I have adult and family left. Did you all get in? GU is a very good program. You take 1 or 2 classes a semester. It is very hard (as most NP schools are) but you get to go to campus in KC twice and you get hands on experience when you are in advanced assessment.
  19. How are things going LJZP?
  20. Congratulations MDavidsoninc and mwhittaker. You have made a good selection in Graceland. I like the program very much. Keep in touch with me privately as well because I want to keep up with how things are going for you. The program is hard as are all other NP programs. There is a great deal to learn. The instructors are actively involved, responsive and fair. You are correct, post masters students do not go to campus but once. You do not go to orientation. The focus session for Adv Health Assessment allowed me to meet the instructors and I was impressed. Each one were practicing NPs and strong intelligent women. Let me know if you have other questions.
  21. In my area (Tulsa, OK) a masters is preferred even for teaching clinicals as an adjunct (part time no more than 28 hours a week). I believe a masters in nursing (not an MBA or in another field) is required to become a full time instructor at the colleges, universities and tech schools here.
  22. I have been a hospice nurse for 3 years and it is my calling. I enjoy the down time between patients driving sometimes 50 miles between patients (but most usually less than 5 miles). The way I look at dying is that it is a sacred event just as important as being born (and in my spiritual belief a birth in itself to a different world). I prefer admissions work which is good because a lot of people don't like that. I go to a family's home, a nursing home and rarely a hospital to evaluate or admit a patient to hospice. We treat the whole family not just the patient because it is obviously a difficult time for the families as well. I educate on what hospice will provide and the care the patient and family will receive. I tell people about our social workers who can help them navigate many things they didn't know they might have to do. I let them know about our chaplains and the care they provide. I tell them about the nurses, medical directors and aides that will be coming to see the patients 4 times a week. Before I do that I get the opportunity to listen to the patient's story about how they came to this point medically. I assess the patient's need for equipment (oxygen, bed, nebulizer, etc) and facilitate getting the equipment delivered. I assess the patient's medications and suggest medications to fill holes (for example, a COPD patient who has breathing medications but no anxiety meds may need to add an anxiety medication) and I get the medications that need to be added or refilled (with physician approval of course). Hospice is there to assess, comfort, teach and manage symptoms. I love being able to spend a great deal of quality time assessing the patient, their family and their needs. I love the autonomy of getting what they need to be more comfortable. I do not feel that this job is depressing. I have learned so much about disease process and how a disease process evolves. I have autonomy and the people I work with are amazing. If you can, try to shadow an RN case manager to see what they do. Pick someone with a positive attitude.
  23. The owl site is great. I agree that using APA more and more helps it not seem scary. What I have found even with the sites that let you create citations the formatting is often wrong.
  24. Post masters students do not go to the first (orientation) focus session as it is to go over things already covered in the prior masters program. Teachnursing, I am happy for you! Congratulations!
  25. ccbryant, in what field are you working?
