  1. I started school at 45 and regret it completely. Go work as a nurses aide to get a good idea of what the job entails before you make a decision. Just because you can do something doesn't always mean you should. I want the last 6 years back! I want a do-over!
  2. I would strongly recommend you listen to your gut feelings, OP. I so wish I had. There are many different healthcare positions. What about OT, PT, radiology tech, etc... Excellent post, DNS.
  3. Wow...you actually get to talk to your patients and listen to their stories. You certainly are lucky!
  4. Its a no-brainer. Take the job at the VA!
  5. Four years from now would you rather be a nurse with a masters degree or the floor nurse that you are now without the masters?
  6. So feeling so desperate and hopeless that you want to kill yourself is not a 'legit' reason? You must know there is something inherently wrong with this attitude, or you wouldn't have predicted a response to your post. Not all illness is physical, as I'm sure you learned in your psych rotations. I really hope you reconsider this attitude. Don't serve as proof to your suicidal patients how harsh the world can be.
  7. My clinical skills are definitely lacking, but I can give one h*** of a PowerPoint presentation! My nursing education was definitely NOT what I was expecting when I forked out that $30,000.
  8. lmao...So that's what you call it!
  9. I can only imagine what the new grads call you...
  10. I'm female and have had a Foley inserted....it wasn't painful at all. What kind of video was this? Seems like this would be low on the list of painful procedures unless there are extenuating circumstances with anatomy or something.
  11. Ditto. Remove the third party profiteers. I want a single-payer system.
  12. Thank you ChristineN and NurseKitten!
  13. Can I ask a question (I'm not a nurse yet)? What would happen if you let it all drain out? I would feel nervous about clamping it off....like maybe it would burst her bladder!
  14. Cute!...and very memorable
  15. Sunny, where I live, if you have a positive TB test, you can go to the health department to get a chest x-ray or the blood test (they gave me my choice). It's likely the Health Department in your state is the same, instead of depending on a physician to order it for you (how annoying!) I got the blood test and I think it cost about $40.
  16. Would your family not understand your absence since you have been offered a job that you describe as one you really want? Or do they, unlike you, put themselves first?
  17. In my accelerated program a 93 is an A and an 84 is a B. My grades did go down to a B average (started with a 3.86). It was the same for many of my classmates. Very intense. I would go the traditional route if I had it to do it over. Make sure and check the grade scale for you school.
  18. I think once you reconstitute it is should be 600 mg/50 ml. Then work out the problem. (Although I'm not sure about that 4 cc; would it then be 600 mg/54 ml? - I've not had it presented that way before)

Me too, Bx! And let me add...I'll have a witness sign too. I agree, Bradley.

Why is it that surgeons can refuse to perform surgery they feel will result in catastrophic results, but nurses are left with ambiguity regarding their patients and, more pertinent to this thread, their license? Does the surgeon get written up for refusing to perform an unsafe surgery????? As a soon-to-be new grad, this thread has been very enlightening. I see the writing on the wall. I will not be long in this business.

Wow. This seems like very bad advice. Once you accept an assignment, you are responsible for care, which would guarantee that you could be charged with abandonment if you try to leave in the middle of a shift. ETA: Which brings up another question. What would she be reported for? Clocking in to a little box on the wall and then clocking out?

I have a question. How are you supposed to know that whatever assignment you are about to take is unsafe unless you actually take report?
  23. I think of it like this... Implications: What I need to be aware of concerning this disease/drug. Interventions: What I'm going to do about it.
  24. That's so funny...I was just saying that word last night and thinking how I like to say it. I don't think you should play dumb. But don't let your idea (or their ideas) that they think you can handle everything keep you from asking questions when you need to. And if you suspect you can't handle something, let them know. Good job!
  25. Me too, Mom35! I can't imagine getting rid of them. You only end up with a fraction of the price you paid if you bought them new. It's not worth it.
