  1. Wow, I started that thread a looong time ago, it's been a couple of years, ha. I finally managed to get a CNA job offer but it didn't pay well since I didn't have much expereience so I declined the offer. I moved on and ended up getting another position in a hospital and so I stopped looking. Hope you get something soon though!:)
  2. I have a few ideas: 1) Getting an RN from a community college is the best way to go since the tuition is low and an RN degree is always an RN degree anywhere in the country. So if you can't afford your first choice for RN school, then go CC. I do and love it!! 2) I can't afford to stay 4-6 years in school trying to get a BSN without working since I too am doing the loan thing this year. So I am going to school for my 2yr RN, at a local CC and will start working after I graduate and pay off some of the loans. 3) After graduating, many hospitals/unions in my area (New York City) will offer some sort of tuition reimbursement/loan assitance and/or incentives for me to get my 4yr RN which I will run to take advantage of. "Fsaav" and "RNWannabe724" have posted before me and have similar plans to take advantage of tuition reimbursment offered to RN's in many hospitals and medical facilities countrywide. Wish you the best!!
  3. I saw the same show you did last night and they actually had a scene with my school (BMCC, NY) in the background so that was cool. Also remember the scene with the twins? That was sweet, he's their uncle! Anyway, it's a very high functioning disorder and you may not notice it right away in some persons. I read the wiki piece on Asperger's online and it's very interesting.
  4. Thank you for your kind response but as you will see if you follow the thread, I found out already that I'm in, YAY!!
  5. Thanks so much FutureRN19! Are you in the day or evening program? I am in the day program, we just have the lottery to find out which of the 2 sections we got into. Wish you the best!!
  6. OMG!!!!!!!!! I AM SOOOOO INNNNN!!!!!!!!!! Yay!! FutureRN19 where are you? I got in too. One of the secretary's called me and I rushed to school to go pick up the package. They called me on 1/4/08 on my birthday!!! Congrats FutureRN19 and hope we can get through it successfully!!
  7. I agree, do not go into work!! DO NOT go into work!! Forget the guilt, think about how guilty you will feel when patients with already compromised immune systems become increasingly ill because of you. Most improtant, remember that someone will always be there to take care of the patients but who is taking care of YOU? You can only help others after helping yourself! Be safe and hope you feel better.
  8. Thanks for the well wishes. Hope you get into BMCC for Spring '08. If you get in look me up!
  9. Mr. S forgot to mention the notification system to me and I forgot to ask during the little application interview. Thanks! Hope to see you there!
  10. You also going to BMCC NYdreamer? No, I think you are going somewhere else right? LIU? Anyways, I got the answer everybody. I called BMCC for the millionth time and finally got someone Ms. L*. She transferred me right away to Mr. S* who told me that applicants are notified the first week of January and those not selected a week thereafter. So I just have to wait...oh boy!
  11. Yes, it is very doable to work while doing pre-clins. But once you get into the nursing program it's extremely hard to work and do well on clins because of the time commitment needed for clins. One thing I must remind everyone is that school or gov't loans are disbursed upto 30 days AFTER the beginning of the semester. So you must have some contingency plan, savings or something that will get you $ for necessities and rent until you get your first disbursment. Again, after Nur1, then you can re-evaluate working and school at the same time. Some people can and choose to do it. I cannot.
  12. Thanks NYdreamer! How are things with you?
  13. Does anybody know when BMCC finalizes (and notifies) the accepted applicants for nursing clinicals? Also when do they do the lottery for the 2 day sections? I keep calling and getting the run around:uhoh3:. I will just go in person to the office next week when I have more time but I was hoping someone here knew since the anticipation is killing me:uhoh3:. Thanks all!
  14. Aaarrrggggggggg!! My eyes!! Use enter button please! Just a little sillyness on my part ignore, was just trying to read your post I have worked in several hospitals and I do not like observing the cna's, tech's or any other so called professional medical staff member behaving in such a manner; using bad attitude, etc. It's childish and silly coming from older folks (or really anyone in a professional setting actually). Like mom4josh said, it may be part of a power struggle or it may be envy. Those envying you could really make your life miserable especially if they felt they had the power to do so. Remember being taunted in school for doing the right thing? The "Bad" students were just envious of the "Good" students and so in the spirit of misery-loves-company, they would try to dissuade others from doing the right thing by taunting them and making them feel like they were the ones doing the wrong thing. Don't let them get to you, continue doing the right thing:up:, do your job and hang in there! Hold your head up high, be proud of all you achievements and just know that somewhere, you are being applauded ?
  15. I am going to BMCC and I have quit my job already!! I want to be jobless (sounds funny) when I do Nur1 because it cannot be repeated and I worked soo hard just to get into the program. It's 8 credits just for that one class and I will be taking others as well so I can't afford to work (sounds funny-can't afford to work, lol). I just won't have the time. There is no "forgiveness policy" for Nur1. So I am going to do the loan thing. I am looking to cover my expenses, including rent, tuition, books, travel and food so I will have to take both unsubsidised and subsidised gov't loans. After first semester I'll re-assess and reconsider getting a job but it's unlikely I will work full-time again until after I graduate nursing school. For the most part I just want to focus on my school work. I am tired of rushing from school to work or vice-versa exhausted and mentally drained. I did it for pre-clinicals and that was bad enough. Some people do it and some people just cannot. I am of the latter! I took some time to go to the financial aid office. Sometimes you have specific questions that aren't answered online. I have read and read until I know the in's and out's and I now feel I am ready for a loan so here goes.
  16. I too hope to get into the Spring '08 clinical at BMCC. I did well in pre-clins so I hope nothing goes wrong. Any books I can buy now to get a head start?? Thanks!!
  17. Don't forget this website where the job listings are updated regularly!!!!! http://employment.nychhc.org/ LOOOVVVE this site for NYC hospital jobs!! Each posting lists the title and requirements for each job. Makes it so easy and again updated at least once a week!!
  18. I was offered $8/hour with no experience by an agency (in NYC) or $10-$15 depending on the experience I had. At local hospitals they offer $11-$13 but they seem much more competitive. That's not too bad.
  19. I currently work at a hospital in Brooklyn, NY and I know some CNA's who have gone on to make quite a good salary with benefits for their families. Although they are professional and you would never know, some are educated and some are not educated beyond an 8th grade level. They work for so long at the hospital though that their tenure affords them a decent salary with great benefits. Many, due to family obligations (elderly parents and young children) are not able to return back to school and others choose not to. They make that decision and just go with it. After some years the hospitals may sponsor them for added EKG or Phlebotomy cert's which elevates their skill level and pay scale. The work can be very physical but for some, this is their choosen career and I really applaud them. When I become a nurse (current student) I hope people don't wonder why I did not choose to be a MD, lol.
  20. "Whatever the difference is between the total amount of $ that you need for the semester/year and the amount the goverment is willing to give/loan you, you'll have to fund through private loans. Chase has the Education One Student Loan program which are private loans that you can apply for. Once you apply and qualify for their loans, they will fund up to $30,000/year and/or up to $100,000 total for your education and/or living expenses. You can apply for whatever amount you want to (within the alloted limits I just described) and they will send the check directly to you. http://www.chasestudentloans.com/" Thank you so much for the info. The post was very informative. I get confused between private and federal gov't loans but you cleared this up for me. The disadvantage of gov't loans like Stafford is they offer very little for those who need a substantially higher loan amount. But it is good to start with them and then go on to private loaners. Thanks soooo much again!!
  21. Hey Sail81, It's Babbz. How's the CNA job going? I am still waiting to get a CNA or PCT job. CNA's they usually hire w/out experience but with PCT ("Techs" or Patient Care Technicians) they usually want some experience so I will most likely try and get a CNA job and then after 1 year move onto a Tech position. I have the EKG and Phlebotomy skills needed for PCT position, I just have no experience. Hope you are doing well and hope to hear from you babe!!
  22. Thanks guys!!! After considering the responses I think that I will need plenty of time to do homework for the clinicals; ie:research papers (like somebody mentioned above) etc. I will try to take some classes during summer1 & summer 2 (Eng2, PSY2, Speech etc) and finish other pre-clins before the clinicals. When I start the clinicals, I will need all the extra time I need to digest it all. Like I said, I do work full-time so I guess I can't probably take any pre-clins with the clinicals. If I lived with my parents and didn't have to work, I probably would've taken another science class with a clinical class considering I would have a lot more time on my hands. Thanks everyone for helping me figure things out. I probably could never do work full-time+clinical classes+another course class and do well. I really can't believe I actually considered it (what was I thinking?) I learn well but I also do well without overwhelming situations. I'm sure many can relate, lol.
  23. You have to really decide. Just from experience it's hard to get a PCT job without at least 1 year of CNA experience so you might wanna take PCT later. But if you have both the time and money now then you might wanna do it now before you start getting too busy with work and college courses. Some places hire those with CNA certs but who haven't taken the state boards yet but if they hire you, you must take the state boards within like 3-4 months. Most places want you to have both your certificate and state board license although after finishing the CNA course you might have to wait a month or more to take the state boards depending on what city/state you are in and how busy they are with students.
  24. I go to school evenings, with classes after 6:30pm everyday so I MUST get a job that allows me to continue with my nursing school. That is a priority. CNA is just a stepping stone and I would sooner get a 9-5 clerical job to continue w/ nursing school than quit nursing school to get a CNA job, lol, ha, ha. The offers that I had were 7am-7pm schedules and these would NOT allow me to continue w/ college so I am looking for a 7am-3pm/8am-4pm schedule so that I can do it. I really want to be a CNA and continue direct care work w/ patients. The experience in a hospital or nursing home will help me as I do my nursing clinicals.
  25. I think I replied to someone a few minutes ago with the same question. My ID is babbz if you look up my last posts it will come up. Please everyone look for instance at nytimes.com key work:nurses aide and you will get jobs. Also nyp.org and look up my last few posts. Also if you have a year experience you should be getting $12 minimum in NYC (upstate it's a bit different, like Rhinebeck and Kingston areas). My problem is finding a job that fits my school schedule!!
