After going through nursing school and doing every single rotation available, I haven't changed my mind - ER ER ER ER! That being said, at least 90% of my peers changed their minds from day 1 to a week or so before graduation. My advice is to be open minded, learn, find your niche. There is a place for each and every one of us going into nursing. Take time to learn, absorb and find your comfort zone. One thing is almost sure, if you like kids you'll end up gravitating towards peds, nicu, picu, et al. I am an adrenaline junkie and think better when their is chaos, codes, etc. Oh dear, my days with the airlines have turned me into this!:)

Hello! I am a new grad taking my boards fairly soon and will be working @ Broward General Hospital ED. Can someone be kind enough to share their experience in general with this hospital/unit? I have heard great things, but other opinions will definetely be welcomed. Thank you!

I'm in my LAST semester of the Accelerated BSN and I agree with Fleur-de-lis, it's very challenging and you have to sacrifice everything. Your life is put on hold for the length of the program. I never gave though of walking this spring, but after so much blood, sweat and tears, you better believe I'll be there walking with my fellow classmates!

The webpage for the one in Broward county is WorkForce One. The contact name in Broward is Michelle Hardy (WIA program). You may want to google to find the closest Work Force One in your area. **This is a FREE program provided by the government to subsidize your studies in nursing. A grant from the Dept of Education is accessible to nursing students in the state of Florida. I have attended an informational session and I do qualify for such aid. The program pays for tuition, books, 2 uniforms, 1 pair of shoes, a stethoscope, NCLEX fees, KAPLAN NCLEX review, $25 gas card monthly, child care, etc. A personal friend of mine just finished nursing school and it was all paid for. There are a few criterias (make less than a certain amount of $ per year, US Citizenship or permanent residency, grades, acceptance letter, et al) There is NO committment to stay in the state or work for any entity whatsover. We found out by March 10 or thereabouts. There have been a few minor changes in the administration and could possibly trigger different timelines. I'm doing the accelerated program @ FAU. The program is intense and fast paced. It truly is what you make out of it - if you want to learn, you learn....My advice is to have your finances lined up, inquire about hospitals offering scholarships (there are tons and tons! just read the "fine" print) and be prepared to give up many things for a year. I signed a contract with UNC Chapel Hill for next year. I'm in an accelerated BSN program and the money was too good to pass on. If there is anyone out there that knows about UNC Chapel Hill, the area, etc, I'd appreciate your input.

I am currently in the Accelerated program (semester 2 of 3) and I can tell u that my school is quite competitive. I have an undergrad with a 3.9 and MBA with 3.8 4.0 in pre-reqs and I scored a 96% on the HESI exam and did not make the first cut (stopped wondering what happened!). I was called about 3 weeks before the start of school. I can share with you that the program is quite intense and you have to remain focused and committed. The exams are very different from anything I've taken in the past. Clinicals are LONG (2 12hrs day) plus 7 hours of community hours on top of our regular classes. It's a plateful but manageable. I agree, you best learn to master how to sleep while in nursing school. It's not harder or easier, it's just different. I am taking 4 classes with clinicals, plus community service on my FREE time, projects, etc (I'm in the accelerated track). It's a challenge but not impossible.

If I'm not mistaken the first class of RN's have or are getting ready to graduate. I have heard from an instructor friend of mine that it seemed to be going just fine (of course the tell tale sign will be the results of the NCLEX). Personally, I don't have the $ to go to Keiser nor do I want student loans. If you have no other options then Keiser may be your answer.

Congrats! I was VERY lucky with my MCB LAB instructor. It was challenging and ended putting in more hours than expected - for one lousy credit! We had a practical and writen part for the final. I didn't do so hot on the final but still managed to pull an "A". Above all I learned SO MUCH!

Galore, ironically enough, the day I made that post I received an email from FAU extending me an invitation (I guess someone declined and I was placed as an alternate). I applied to Barry University and Jacksonville University and got accepted and albeit late FAU. I'm going for JU - it has a good program, nice people and I received a partial scholarship.

Szelda and Galore: I am not sure about PBCC but do know that FAU/MDC/BCC are eligible for the grant. I applied to FAU and despite having a 3.8 in undergrad, 3.8 in grad, 4.0 in pre-reqs and a 95% on the HESI I didn't get in. Call Workforce One (www.wf1broward.com) @ 954-967-1010 ext 162 (Mr. Maloney) Tell him that you are interested in the grant for school. Your best bet would be to call and ask the operator if he's in and go there IN PERSON. I know personally of 2 friends that have received aid. Good luck and let me know.

nlion87: I don't know about the part time program but will tell you that a close friend of mine started the accelerated in January and wishes she could have gone for the traditional. She's passing albeit with C's (which is a GREAT grade) The applications for accelerated and generic is due on 5/1 and decisions by mid June and they start in August. If you get in, let me know. There is a program for Miami/Broward county schools that pay for your school/uniform/gas/books and stipend. My friend is on it!

Don't give up! Consider schools in nearby cities (to avoid out of state fees). Another option would be the LPN-RN-BSN track. If you can dream about it, you can make it happen!!!!!!!

I start the accelerated BSN in May and don't have much of an idea of what to get. I have a stethoscope, scrubs and that is about it. I have read about PDAs, etc, etc. Can anyone please share your opinions? I am quitting my job so COBRA here I come:( Anyone know of an affordable insurance? Any little hint/idea/opinion will be greatly appreciated.

I agree, Oprah is a forifice! She seems so nice and approachable but that is faaaaaaaaaaar from the truth! Back in the early 90s before she had her private jet she was on one of my flights and the flight attendants in first class wanted to throw themselves over the granade. She wanted to know why there were no black flight attendants in FC and freaked out when we arrived at a gate that was distant from baggage claim. Her latest tantrum over in Paris with Hermes just shows how fake she is. I don't think she would do a show about nurses (except if it had a negative connotation)

I start school on 5/15 therefore I have no plans for the summer except to study, study, study! It's actually not as bad as I think because it will keep my mind occupied in lieu of worrying about the awful hurricanes we get here in Florida.

Hello folks! This is my first time posting on allnurses.com. I am starting the accelerated BSN program @ Jacksonville University. Anyone out there accepted or knows about the program? If so, please let me know. The process was smooth and JU has been extremely helpful throughout the entire ordeal. It's amazing how organized they seem and make you feel welcomed. I applied to 3 schools (JU, Barry University and Florida Atlantic University). I was accepted @ JU and Barry U. but denied over @ Florida Atlantic despite having a 3.89 GPA in my undergrad, 3.7something in grad school and a 4.0 on my prerequisites. Go figure! Good luck to all of you who are staring this year!!!!
