CNA to LVN in 5 months
I don't think you necessarily need to take that program if you are a CNA who wants to challenge the LVN boards. I actually have a couple of acquaintances that has done this. I just heard that you have to have a certain amount of years as a CNA, and experience in Med-Surge, and take a pharmacology class. Your best bet is to look it up under the Board of Vocational Nursing website.

sick of ADN vs BSN! like most of us have a choice anyway!
Whatever with it... ADN vs BSN as a clinical/floor nurse, you get paid equally. I still want to get my BSN one day, but I am in no rush....

Is this average?
Dear Ethnic Beauty, With your sensitivity in Commuter's simple response to your simple question, how do you think you're going to survive working as a Nurse. You will be the eyes and ears of the DR.'s and will be communicating with them for the most part, trust when I say you will be attacked by their superiority and super ego because they're education level is higher than you. What will you do then? How will you react to that? If you're pissing your pants about The Commuter's subtle answer, then I'm afraid you'll be crying your heart out when a Physician or future colleagues come off offending you. GOOD LUCKKKKKKKKKKKKK with that! However you may take this post of mine, I don't care...... ~kathy

LPN'S are NURSES TOO
Oh how I hate it when ppl say or think LVN/LPN's aren't Nurses. Those people use their ignorance in their two cents. The very first person to put me in this position of questioning my Nursing title was my MOTHER IN LAW. Could you believe it? The nerve!!! After graduating the VN program, she asked about someone we both knew, about that person's job. I told her this person she was asking about is an LVN and a DSD, and my MONSTER IN LAW said, "Oh I thought she was a nurse." Oh myy goshhh, she knew I was an LVN too. *****!!!! That hurt my feelings. I replied, "SHE IS A NURSE." Then when I passed my boards, my husband calls his mother (my MONSTER IN LAW) to tell her the great news. I didn't care for her to be informed. You know what this monstrous woman told me on the phone? "Oh congratulations, so are you an RN now?" Knowing for a FACT, that it was LVN that I recently finished... I replied, "Mom, no LVN remember?", and the monster said, "Oh." When my husband and I were first dating, I remember Monster in law thinking about going back to school in becoming a nurse but felt too old. Mind you, she is in her mid 50's. Then she was pushing her daughter (my sister in law) to do Nursing, but she didn't want to at the time because she claims it's a dirty job and can't deal with blood, crap, and smelly stuff. Yes, they were both describing the Nursing job as a "dirty job" in front of me. Now, the hypocrites that they are, my sister in law is majoring in Nursing too. HAHAHAHAHA.... I think my Mother in law is too old fashioned (from the philippines, where they think RN's are the only qualified nurses, no wait BSN). Little does she know that I am going to be an RN one day, and I opted in becoming an LVN first because it's a requirement for the local RN program at the community college. Nd' I LOVE NURSING, I always wanted to be a nurse. I am not in it because I don't know what to do with my life so I just decided to be a nurse. Or I am not in it becasue I seen in the ad that nurses make 45 dollars an hour. Hence, my sister in law's reasons for becoming a nurse. SO TO MY FELLOW LVN/LPN's... More power to you all. We are all nurses. We know it, and our patients know, that is all that matters. Whether becoming an RN is in our plans and goals or not, LVN/LPN's are stillll and will always be nurses.

30 Unit RN Program
In California, there are some schools that offer a 30 Unit RN program. Can anyone explain this to me? I am an LVN, and graduated from a Vocational college, therefore I have no prerequisites done in order for me to get into a Associates Degree Nursing Program just yet. But I've been hearing about this 30 Unit RN program lately, and am highly curious and may be interested. Can someone enlighten me with some pro's and con's. Here are the things I do know: You don't graduate with a degree You don't graduate with a diploma You just finish some parts of the program or whatever and is able to take the NCLEX-RN and can only work in the state of California. In my case, I was thinking that I can do this, get my 30 Unit RN program done, take the boards. And once I'm get my RN, go back to get my degree. HELPPPPPPPPPPPPPP w/ more info.

No longer an Orientee / LOSING MY HEAD!
Beginning yesterday, I was no longer an orientee. I am employed at an LTC. The nursing to resident ratio is 1:36, but the facility has begun to split that so sometimes it is 1:18. If a nurse calls in sick in that wing, the other nurse is to take over the whole 36 residents. Guess what? On my first day off of orientation, the other nurse called in sick. I had 36 patients, 8 fingersticks (usually out of whack, so sliding scale is always put to use), 2 on ATB, 3 Falls (neurochecks), 2 G-tube, 1 trying to cut something out of her eye w/ scissors that she won't give up without being combative, seems like millions of prn's given upon requests, etc. etc. etc. AHHHHHHHHHHHHH! I'm going to scream.... To make matters worse, I called my work today to see if the other nurse is still ill, and SHE IS. So, again, I'm on my own w/ 36 residents on the west wing. Don't you think they should call someone to fill in her spot for the night? This is so unfair. I'm a new grad nurse too, and this is my first job. I love nursing, but if I continue nursing this route, I'll go crazy. This is tooo much. Unsafe and low quality of care *screams*.

LPN Starting Salary
I'm a new LVN. I got hired @ $20.55/hr at an LTC. Love it! Also heard of another LTC in town hiring @ $25/hr. Good luck!

first med pass, successful but slow
I feel like we're wearing the same shoes lol. I'm on my 5th day of orientation at an LTC.. I've passed meds on my own already as well and has been oriented on both wings already... i've noticed that the other nurses finish quicker and make it look so easy because most of them do it by memory since they're used to the patients and facility.... we have a horrible ratio on the west wing, which is 1 nurse to 38 residents... imagine the workload?!

OHHH I feel silly asking this!
At the facility where I work, all Licensed Nurses has to wear ONLY plain colored scrubs. To differ from the aides and other non-licensed personnel. I love the "dickies" and "urbane" scrubs. They're my fav. They have many cute plain colored dickies scrubs in different fun styles. My fav. are the pin-striped scrubs. Very nursey nursey pimperish hahahaha.

Help with NCLEX-PN

To those who failed the Nclex the first time..
UGHHH!! Why do in-laws (or in your case, your BF's family) have to be so damned RUDE when it comes to our nursing careers? I know how you feel. My mother in-law makes it seem like I'm not a real nurse because I'm an LVN. I plan on doing my RN one day, that's always been my initial goal. But where I come from, you have you have your LVN done before getting in the RN program. It makes me angry how she tries to make me feel low... I've failed my NCLEX before. Don't worry. You're not alone. You obviously have what it takes to be a nurse, you passed the program. The NCLEX is silly to me. Alas, it's something that we have to take in order for us to be licensed. You will pass. I did. You will too. Congrats and Good luck. eFFF the haters! Tell them to suck your middle finger until they choke. JK.

Mean to Orientees
That's horrible. I'm going to be a new orientee sometime within the next week or so. I got hired on the spot after my interview and went to tour the facility with the D.O.N. and I could already feel the intimidation rush through my blood streams. Maybe the staff were too busy to smile or anything, but they did look mean and intimidating. Ahhhhh how scary. I don't want someone to tell me I'm stupid or forget that I'm there for them to orient as a new nurse. OMG how scary.

I just PASSED and GOT HIRED.
My situation: I graduated in 2003. I failed my boards before. Retook the test last month. I passed! I had a job interview yesterday and was offered a job at an LTC. Starting pay is $20.55. I'm nervous because I haven't been in the nursing field since 2003. I'm so rusty. Any advice? Should I take a refresher course? Even if you tell me I should, I don't know of any close by. I know I'll have orientation until I feel comfortable to be on my own, but I AM SO NERVOUS. I'm afraid I'm going to look like a fool. I start on the 31st of August. Ahhhhh!! ADVICE?

Lvn Pay Raises????????
there's your answer - SHE LIVES IN THE BAY AREA. It's higher cost of living up there, so of course their nurses make a little more.
