I'm looking into two different job prospects. One hospital is offering a "rotating position" where you would learn/experience their cardiac/neuro/respiratory ICUs. The other is offering only a speciality of cardiac ICU. Has anyone had the experience with a rotating ICU to help me understand if this would be a wise decision or not? I love learning about many things, so on the surface this sounds amazing. I am stuck on deciding because the CVICU is what I originally wanted and it is with a large university/academic hospital. The rotating one is in a large hospital system. I can see benefits to both, but have experience in neither situations. Is "rotating" just code for overworking you, or do I limit myself by only doing CVICU. I am keeping DNAP/CRNA in my sight too, so is one better than another if I am wanting to get into an anesthesia program?

I would love to hear from anyone who has joined the Vanderbilt nurse residency. I was offered a position with Ascension St. Thomas in an area that I want, but Vanderbilt is also potentially going to offer it to me. I'm trying to compare the two and decide. Please help if you have any input.

I love your attitude and hope to get as many advanced certs to work with higher acuity. I will be going into the ICU new and I am wondering what is your recommendation for obtaining the advanced certifications? For the CCRN, what is the practical time on getting 1,750 hours required for it? Did you work a lot of overtime to do it quickly?

Are you going into their nurse residency program or just as a new hire? How did the interiew go? Do you mind sharing the type of questions they asked?

I am curious what track you are in. I am trying to get into their ICU's.

Did you take the Physiology course with MTSA prior to your interview? Also, can you tell me about your clinicals? I live south of Nashville and I'm wondering how doable the clinicals are throughout the program. How many days of the week/hours/etc. What's the farthest you travel for them?

Thanks for the input. I'm not putting any cart before horses. Maybe my question wasn't written in the best way. I'm looking for information on BOTH types of career paths so I can understand them better to assess which one is a better path for me right now. The residency that I am looking at has you come in and select the learning track. One track is OR focused and one is ICU focused. I would like to hear more about both professions before deciding the track. I'd like to know why people like being RNFA's or CRNA's and what they like/dislike about their careers.

I'm 45. You're not old AT ALL. People are living longer. The way I see it? You are not even half way living yet. If you want to try the hospital, you do it!

Agree with all above. Your grammatical and misspelling errors would reflect that you still don't have time for them. So PLEASE make sure you get someone to review what you've written and advise you on that. I think that stating you are still going to work as a PRN is a mild red flag. Your reasons for leaving are because life around you was falling apart. As a nurse, you are going to face incredible challenges and they are going to have to see that you can meet those challenges. In my opinion, I think your larger mistake here was not recognizing that you needed to take off from the school and you tried to be "superwoman" despite the death of your father and other life changing events. Part of learning to be a nurse (or an advocate in any position) is knowing when you need help and knowing when you need to take a step back. Self care is part of being an excellent nurse. Perhaps that's the lesson you have just learned? If I were sitting and looking at your letter to ask for reinstatement, I want to know what you did wrong, what you did right and how you will fix it in the future. I do not want to hear that you will not make mistakes again becuase that is simply not true. I would focus on being more self aware and knowing when to ask for help and when to step back in the future. I would also want to see that you are 100% committed to the end result and seeing yourself throught the program. I would quesiton that when I see that you're still going to work PRN. I think you are better off keeping that out of the conversation. I do think that it is valuable for you to state that you currently work in a hospital, want to support your current colleagues and work extra (while you're not in school) to help with the nursing shortage. That shows commitment.

I have a Bachelor's, a Master's and more than enough collegiate credits to qualify as a Doctorate. I have taught Anatomy and Physiology, Zoology, Biology and all sorts of science courses on top of all that. I am a second career nurse. NURSING school for my ADN has been the most challenging courses and tests I have ever had out of the hundreds of college credits I have ever had. It's not easy and I often wonder why the heck any RN at any level doesn't have a higher level of credits. It is hard but not impossible. Live, Eat, Sleep Nursing and you will make it. You got this!

@londonflo There are some times in life where you have to put your health and self preservation ahead of your goals. I think you're in one of these times. Why would you want to be trained by people with this type of approach to nursing and life in general? YOU DESERVE BETTER. There is no price you can put on an environment that harnesses your genius, guides you and builds you beyond what you even know to be your potential. It sounds like where you are is poison. My advice? Get out of this abusive environment and grow elsewhere. YOU ARE WORTH that sacrifice.

@ThatRedheadNurse Congrats on the acceptance! Thank you so much for sharing the start rates they are offering! I am about 6 months behind you and I'm excited! I saw my first surgery yesterday and about died in heaven. I think I found my track!

@Leader25Why would I want to know the rate of turnover? I feel like that's looking at the world's greatest roller coaster and then looking at all the potential things that could happen to me, decide it could kill me and then never step a foot on the ride and miss an experience of a lifetime. I'd prefer to explore within my own experience and adjust as I go. I am very self aware. If I personally start to feel burn out, then that is when I will make a decision about. I'm here to live and serve. You can't truly live if you're always looking for reasons to never try anything.

@PMFB-RNThis isn't the right post to vent your frustration within. Start a whole new one for that or go on one that already exits. Why come in here and promote a negative opinion to people who have nothing to do with your emotions/experience? It's OK to be appalled, but there is a time/place for that and it's not here where people are excited and hoping to find others that are too. Step back a second and think about how you are acting towards us. Your post sends a message that portrays that you are horrified by us. How in the world does that help the nursing profession or anyone? It doesn't. Please take your grievance elsewhere, this is not the place.
