New job. Got injured. Fired for unexcused absences during new hire probation period... what did I do wrong?
I have strong feelings that this has to do with you going to the ER during your shifts. I personally would never volunteer to go to the ER during my shift; the only way I'm going is if someone takes my unconscious body there. You probably should have waited until after your shift. There is this attitude in hospitals that nurses and other employees should put the job ahead of themselves, "for the patients." It sucks, but it's reality. I mean, look at what has happened with Covid. Hospitals are willing to let us die to take care of patients. They do not care if your back hurts. You became a liability when they wanted a reliable employee. It's not your fault, but this is why they fired you. It doesn't matter how good of a hire you are if you aren't actually there working and are instead costing the hospital money. Edited to add: I know this upper neck pain you speak of. It is terrible and debilitating. I do not doubt that you needed medical attention nor do I think you are wrong in looking after your own health.

Group chats and cheating?
unfortunately, it doesn't necessarily matter what your moral beliefs are when reporting cheating- she likely signed a handbook that makes it one of her responsibilities. Depending on the nursing program, I would not risk my academic future over concerns to not be a snitch. It's simply not worth it. There are ten people in line behind her waiting to take her spot. This is exactly why there are handbooks and policies- it takes the guess work out of it. Every academic policy I've ever seen states that if you know about cheating, you are obligated to report it. If someone else reports the cheating, she could be in hot water b/c she participated in the group so therefore at the very least knew it was happening

How bad will it get in the fall/Winter time?
Got the injection today after a two-hour appointment (it's paid, so ndb). I think I got antigen and not saline. The EMT all but told me it was the vaccine. Will normal saline sting if injected? I imagine it would so I don't know if I can go by that alone. I so far have no tenderness or injection site reaction- its as if I did not get a vaccine at all.

Quoting you both b/c I don't know how to "tag" people on here ha. So tomorrow I'm getting the first of two injections for P's trial followed by four blood tests (over time of course and possibly one in b/t injections). The person I spoke to told me it was possible a trial rep for Moderna called me from the same facility, however that trial has not yet started. I asked the person about known S/E & rxns to the vaccine and was told they are minor and comparable to a flu shot. I've had so many vaccines for school and (so far) very low S/E to each, so I feel comfortable moving forward in this trial. Just wanted to update.

- How bad will it get in the fall/Winter time?
see my above post- this is Moderna's and I was called for Pfizer's (in my original post I thought I was being called for Moderna's). It's possible they said "seven visits" and I interpreted that as seven injections but I honestly thought they said seven injections. I will admit when they called I was very skeptical that it was even a legit call- I wasn't paying very close attention to what she was saying b/c I was concerned it was a phishing scam. Turns out, it wasn't. I will get some clarification when I call and will report back after the first injection. I def don't want to be spreading false information! I just googled "Pfizer" and the first article that popped up is Motley Fool article (for investors, which I am) "Why Pfizer Could Be a Bigger Coronavirus Winner Than Moderna" I don't invest in any of these biotechs, or any other "Covid plays" and I take investment articles w/a grain of salt b/c authors often have short or long positions on the stocks they're hawking.- How bad will it get in the fall/Winter time?
I'm confused b/c when they first called me I could have sworn they said Moderna but they called me Monday to schedule the first injection this week and said it was Pfizer... I feel like Moderna's vaccine might be a flop? Pfizer was recently awarded a ton of money from the government. Just a haunch. I couldn't get the first injection this week b/c I have symptoms and was awaiting my Covid test results. I tested negative so I can go next week for the first injection. It is double blind so I won't know if I'm getting saline or vaccine.- How bad will it get in the fall/Winter time?
I was told I would be getting SEVEN injections... but that's not what's been printed in the media and disclosed in press releases. It's possible the vaccine is going to be a flop. I think it's interesting that recently two other companies were awarded large sums of money for their vaccine candidates.- How bad will it get in the fall/Winter time?
There probably won't be a vaccine for one to two more years. I am in the process of joining Moderna's phase 3 trial and they have told me that it will last over the next two years. So, I wouldn't hold your breath for a vaccine. They are just now starting phase 3, which sounds promising b/c they've already done phases 1 & 2, but phase 3 is the meat and potatoes and lasts the longest. If trial results are positive, they will submit the NDA (new drug application) and will likely request a PRV (priority review voucher) and will likely get it b/c the Trump train is backing this company and also b/c a priority review is completely applicable to this situation. The FDA review for NDA takes a long time even with a PRV. As much as some of us might want a vaccine quickly, it's just not possible to start injecting people with something that has promising results when we don't know the side effects/actual efficacy of the drug.- Dr. Pimple Popper Thinks Nurses Have No Place Educating Patients
The point is that this is a WebMD article that an RN is qualified to write. There's no need to attack it. Did she point out anything that's incorrect? No. If Dr. PP wants to complain about who is writing the article and imply that the author isn't good enough, then.... why doesn't she... write one.... herself.... Literally nobody is stopping her from doing that. I actually think its very telling that an RN wrote a patient education article instead of an MD. Maybe Dr. PP is too busy doing her work to care about dedicating extra time to educate people. It wouldn't be the first time this has happened.- Radonda Vaught Fatal Error Case Timeline
Terrifying that someone with this little common sense can work as a nurse. "I thought it was odd that it was a powder." What?? I mean... insane. "I thought it was strange that I was firing a loaded gun into the patient instead of injecting the prescribed medication." This is what that sounds like.- Where to go as a nurse if you dont want to work with patients at ALL?
You definitely need to be a circulating OR nurse. You have to deal with them pre-op, but not for very long. If you want to be a scrub nurse instead, even less patient interaction....- Difficult doc
"There is no written protocol" ought to shut him up real quick, along with a firm "also, I don't appreciate being spoken to this way." Does he pay you or make decisions on your employment status? No? Then he can go kick rocks. I've had to work for plenty of arrogant jerks, and the best way to handle these people is to give it right back to them. If you're not doing something stupid, then make them feel stupid for getting upset. It also makes them feel like they are psychos, which they are. "Why would a phone call upset you so much?" "Why are you getting so upset? You're literally shaking." I've said this to a guy who just exploded on me in a highly inappropriate way. Not being able to control yourself is a weakness; these types of personalities are weak. Remember that. They compensate by being assholes.- Openly criticizing a fellow nurse.
Control your emotions at work. It will save you a whole lot of trouble if you learn to do this ASAP. Everyone feels things and wants to vent, but its best to just not. Unless it's an HR matter, best to keep your opinions to yourself until asked specifically for those opinions. There's a time and place to express concerns and frustrations, and in front of a bunch of other staff ain't it.- Question about prescriptions
sure it's "alright," as long as the primary is okay being responsible for the prescription & any negative consequences of prescribing. how would you, I mean the patient, know ahead of time if they aren't going to experience those side effects? ? - How bad will it get in the fall/Winter time?
