Low GPA, High Pre Requisites
CSUSM looks only at your GPA in your last 60 units & prerequisites (along w/ TEAS score). Could be a great option for you! They have a 2nd campus in temecula too if thats closer to where you live

Advice needed about changing majors... I feel like I've made a mistake
I hesitate to say that it will be "easier" but I am currently taking organic chemistry for the second time (I got Cs in both classes the first time I took them 8-9 yrs ago). The first time I took it was at a large university where I got my BS, my lectures were in huge lecture halls w/ 300+ people. Now I'm retaking at community college and the class is small, probably less than 30 people and it is so much more personal and easy to ask for help! Of course I'm older, a better student, and more motivated this time around so that makes a difference as well, but I think the class environment plays a role. I'm on track to get an A :)

No immunity after Hep B immunization?
I had a similar thing happen to me and was told that its actually quite common. Just get the titers done relatively soon after you finish the series and you will be good to go! Apparently many people do not retain Hep B immunity...

Is 2-3 weeks enough time to study and take the TEAS exam?
I only studied 3 weeks, but if I'm being honest I'm a good standardized test taker and I also had A&P very fresh in my mind at the time. Take the ATI practice tests on their website and let those scores guide your decision, I found those to be very true to the actual test.

Tablet for school??
I've been resistant to ebooks for years because I hate reading on the computer too and felt like I learned better reading a physical book, but I recently recently bought an etextbook for the first time and have been reading it on my ipad and WOW I am never going back! I read it in an app called Notability that allows you to highlight, take notes, and flag pages to return to. I highly recommend.

Can I Be a Nurse?
I would encourage you to reach out to your local community college and meet with an academic counselor who can guide you on this path. Not having basic math skills definitely will be a hurdle to overcome, but I am inclined to think that you have been through some very tough circumstances in your life that have led you to this point. There are resources out there and many people willing to help you on your journey. You may need extra tutoring and it may take longer for you than other students, but if you are proactive and reach out for help when you need it, you can absolutely get to where you want to be.

ABSN Cal State San Marcos (CSUSM) Spring 2020
In the table that shows that your application is complete it show which term you applied for. So, mine has two rows, one for Fall 2019 and one for Spring 2020. Fall 2019 says "student withdrew application" (I declined their admission offer for fall) and Spring 2020 says "completed application." Hope that helps.

Hep B vaccine requirement.
I recently had hep B titers done and they came back negative despite having had the series about 15 years ago. I asked one of the techs if this was common and he told me yes, the vaccine unfortunately doesn't confer long-lasting immunity for many people and its common to have to repeat the series. He told me he had the series done twice and still had negative titers... I assume this is why!

Least impacted community college RN programs
Humboldt State in Arcata and College of the Redwoods in Eureka both have nursing programs. No idea if they are impacted (grew up in the area but no longer live there) but I would guess not.
-
Why is there a 7 year limit on prerequisites for nursing?
You find it unethical that the school wants you to be well prepared for their program? And I fail to see how its "money hungry" considering nearly all students returning to school take their prereqs at a CC, so the nursing school is certainly not profiting off of these requirements.

Student externship in ICU requires prior experience?
@gere7404 Thank you! I figured it must be something along those lines, but since we do not get to have input in our rotation placements I guess it will just be luck of the draw
-
Student externship in ICU requires prior experience?
@Rose_Queen Yeah, by the time I'll be eligible I will have taken classes that cover some aspects of critical care, but my program doesn't offer a course that focuses solely on critical care so I'm not sure if that will be enough. Thanks for your input!

Student externship in ICU requires prior experience?
A student nurse externship I plan on applying to lists the requirement that to be considered for the ICU, applicants "must have prior ICU coursework and experience." I really want to be eligible to apply to extern in the ICU, but I'm a little confused as to what prior experience in the ICU they might be looking for aside from maybe working as a CNA/PCT in the ICU. I still have a few semesters before I can participate in the externship, so if there is anything I can do now to help make me a competitive candidate, I would love to be able to do so. I have reached out to the main point of contact for the externship with these questions but have not heard back, so I wanted to see if anyone on here has any feedback or advice. Thanks so much!

Should I take Biology and Microbiology in the same semester?
Shouldn't bio be a prereq for taking micro? If you have never taken a biology class before, you may struggle in micro since you don't have any background knowledge of the basics.

Do most ABSN programs require extracurriculars and letters of recommendation?
None that I applied to required letters either, but every school is different. The school I chose to attend based their decisions purely off of GPA and TEAS scores, but another that I was accepted to required an essay and gave extra points for verified volunteer work or work in healthcare. I suggest doing your own research to find out what the individual requirements are for all the programs you're interested in. Personally, when I first started working to complete all my prereqs I made a spreadsheet of all the requirements for each school to help me keep track of it all because unfortunately they will not all be the same.

Can I take Pre-Reqs for ABSN programs anywhere? at a community college?
This is not true in my experience. I also graduated 6 years ago and had plenty of public/state school options. Maybe it varies by region but I found very few schools here in CA that had recency requirements.
-
Does it matter where you get your ABSN degree from? What about online vs in-person programs?
@verene this is perfectly said!

How many schools should I apply for the ABSN program? Should I apply out of state?
Do the schools you're interested in publish average stats for accepted students? If so, how do your stats stack up? 3.8 is a good GPA, so if the school you're applying to has an average of say 3.5 for admitted students that tells you that you have a good chance. No point in applying to a ton of schools if you know you can get into the one you really want. Of course GPA is not the only factor, but you get what I'm saying. The questions you're asking depend one the state you live in and how competitive the schools are. The program I'll be attending in CA is 44k for a 2 yr ABSN. Not sure how that stacks up against other programs but I imagine its pretty par for the course on the west coast.
