My current DON and ADON are in school to be NPs. Their school schedule is getting too hectic for the demands of the position. Our building is a doing very well and she will be their to help me transition. Thanks for your reply.

Hello all, I have been an RN for 7 years. I will be graduating next month with my BSN. I've been in LTC for the last 2 1/2 years. I currently am the Staff Development Coordinator/Infection Control Nurse. I have been approached by my administrator about stepping up and taking the position of DON when our current DON leaves this summer. Our building has over 130 beds and involved in many programs. I will have full support of the administrators, corporate office and nurse managers. It is a great opportunity but I think I am nervous about the new level of responsibility. Any advice????

I am a recently separated mom of with 2 kids. I currently work at an adult foster care/rehab facility M-F from Midnight to 8 am. I left the hospital because I had to leave my 16 year old and 7 year old at home alone, beginning at 6pm in the evening until 8-9 am in the morning. Transportation to school has been an issue. so my estranged husband (who works afternoons) comes to my house to sleep after work so he can get the kids off to school on time in the morning. I hate this arrangement because I dont trust hime in my home when I am not there. At my current job, I don't pass meds, assessments are only once a month or as needed and my boss treats me like an idiot. I have no defined duties. I am just there if an urgent situation occurs. the rehab assistants do all of the care and meds. I feel as if I am wasting away. I am a RN with about 2 years experience and this job is sucking me dry. On the other hand it pays well. I was offered a position today with a hospital based home health care affiliated with one of the best hospitals in Michigan. The hours are flexible, I can take my kids to school and pick them up. I will also be at home at night, no need for my ex to be there. The downside is that there is a $3.25 pay cut. But the benefits are almost a $100 cheaper bi-weekly and $0.51/mile reimbursement. The orientation and on-going training with the new position is awesome. Would you take the cut in Pay?

I just finished my NCLEX exam. 75 questions, some difficult, others extremely hard. Over 8 SATA (stopped counting) and 2 med calculation. I honestly don't know how I did. I am aware that 75 could means I did well or horribly bad. I need a Xanax!:confused::confused::confused::confused:

Thanks, all schools have there issues but know that I received an excellent education. Especially, after being in orientation this week and seeing that I am doing quite well and holding my own with my peers from or CC or univesities. I've been working in health care for over 15 years and throughout my career whenever I have worked with a WCCCD grad, they have been some of the most thorough and safe nurses to work with. I never listened to the negative things people said about our school because the semester that I was accepted into the program, WCCCD had television commericials boasting our 100% NCLEX pass rate. And I don't know the exact number now but it is still pretty high. Also I find that the bashing either comes from people who have been kicked out of the program, people that could not get accepted to the program or those that have a problem with anything affiliated with Detroit in any shape, form or fashion . Congrats to all of you and by the way, I am still waiting on my ATT (didn't mean to hijack the thread, lol).

I agree! The talent pool is pretty thick in this area! Congrats and best wishes to you. I just completed my 1st week as a graduate nurse and I am still excited!! (WCCCD grad here!)

I got the impression that her student's really liked her but say that "she's God" (I'm sure it's a figure of speech), shows that she is one of your favorites and I was not trying to offend anyone. She may indeed be very intelligent but if you do not agree with answer, it would be nice to provide a rationale. No one really questioned her (a few ppl did) and I get the sense that many of her students hold her in such high regard that they don't question her. I always ask why (even to the most lettered instructors). Fast talkers in general are a pet peeve of mine. It's not because I can't keep up with but they seem frazzled to me. She was not horrible and nothing personal against her but she hit on some of my pet peeves that I have about teachers.

Good grief! I thought it was because she had a lot of information to cover, lol. I bet her lips and jaws are exhausted at the end of the day!

The lady on the second and third day spoke entirely too fast and disagreed with a lot of the right answers. So yes, that was a tad annoying.

At WCCCD, we do not get our "release papers" from the schoool until we complete these reviews. We sign in and out each day. They are really for our benefit and after jumping through hoops for 2 years, it's not a big deal.

I am a student at WCCCD and it is not optional for us. We have representatives from our school to sign us in and out. It is a lot of information to review, I wish it was more about strategy for taking NCLEX instead of reviewing content. And on top to that, we have another 3 day review next week, that's mandatory.:yawn:

Haha!! No, I didn't see that I was in the parking lot shouting, lol! I celebrated with my family at home, more celebrations to come. Yay! Graduation, I can't wait. Let me know if there are any specific questions you need me to ask before Saturday. And if you go to the rehearsal please fill me in because more than likely I will not be there.

I took my last final today and PASSED!!! I am now a graduate nurse and saying so long to WCCCD! (Except for the next 2 weeks of NCLEX reviews) I can't believe I did it!!!!!!!!!! The best and worst experience of my life.

To all of those people in my last clinical group: 1. "I got up at 4 am this morning to get to this clinical by 6 am, after being on the floor for 7 to 8 hours-I am ready to go home. In post-conference I do not care that the patient's mother's cousin's sister's aughter had a history of hypertension when the kid is in the hospital for r/o sepsis." 2. "I don't care if you cat had seizures and you take 15 minutes in post conference telling us about it." 3. "Why are you spending so much time reading the patient's chart and nursing textbooks during clinicals, so much time that you are not completing your patient care and assessments on time, making all of us stay late on the unit?" 4. "If you haven't spoken to me in the last two years, not even returning a good morning (and we are in the same clinicals), why should I take time out and help you with your careplan?" But to the wonderful people that became my friends, I would have to tell them thank you for the support. I appreciate you all encouraging me when I doubted myself or my abilities, thank you for cheering me on when I accomplished my goals and I know that we will be friends for life.

You can go into the nursing office and ask for the syllabus in advance so you can get started on your reading. Word of caution or advice: Don't call and ask for it, you would be much more successful if you go in.

Congrats to all of the graduates!!!! I am done on May 11, our pinning is May 15, I begin my new job June 1 and our graduation is on June 6!! I am super excited and ready to start working!

Congrats to all of you that got the "happy letter"!!! I wish you all the best and much success at WCCCD. I will be completing the program on May 11, 2009 and it seems like it was only yesterday that I was waiting for my letter to come!! It goes by so fast, fasten your seatbelts!!

I am graduating with an Associates Degree in Nursing, no problem finding work. But I don't know how it is going for others.
