Fall 2017 Chat
Just started my first day of nursing school! Honestly, the fundamentals professor I have has really bad ratings on RMP. But she doesn't seem too bad...yet. I'm taking fundamentals, pharm, physical assessment, stats, and intro to theater. Still in the summer vacation mode though. Need to snap out of it soon.

Why are nursing students getting older
For most if not all of the older students in my class were pursuing nursing as a 2nd career. There's like only three other girls besides me that are under 21. Everyone else is in their late twenties to late thirties.

Bergen Community College Nursing Program 2017
I didn't take the math placement test but I assume that you just need to know your basic algebra. You can go to Accuplacer Study Guides | Bergen Community College for more info. It took me one year to finish all my pre-reqs. Good luck!

Was anyone bad at math/ science before prerequisites?
Science was not my strong point in high school. I didn't understand anything and failed tests. However, when I went to college and figured that I wanted to pursue nursing, I really buckled down and started studying for about two hours a day. Got all A's and found that I actually learned to LIKE science. Also, for math, just make sure that you just know your basic algebra since it's needed in chem. It all comes down to how determined you are to reach your goal.

How old were you when you started nursing school?
I will be 20. I feel a little bit behind from everyone I know. People from high-school will be in their third year of college, while I'll be in my first year of my ADN program. By the time I get my ADN and move on to get a BSN, they'll be out of college. I also feel like I wasted my whole freshman year at a state university. I wanted to be a English or History teacher and took a whole bunch of useless liberal arts courses. Towards the end of my freshman year, I decided to become a nurse because of it's stability. Unfortunately, my GPA was quite low (3.3) and I had no chance of getting into the university's BSN program. I then transferred to a local cc, got all my pre-reqs finished, and I'm starting the ADN program this fall. On the bright side, I saved tons of money by going the ADN route.

I must ace TEAS test first time
First off, take a breather. It's ok if you don't pass the first time. Depending on the school, you can retake it 30 days later. For the TEAS, you'll want to get some sort of study guide. I used the Mometrix study guide and the reading, math, and grammar prepared me pretty well for the actual test. The math is a little harder in the practice exams than on the actual test. For the science, do as many practice questions as you can. Quizlet is your friend. Don't understand a certain concept? Google and youtube are your friends. There's also free TEAS practice exams such as Free Test Prep for the TEAS & TEAS Practice Test | Free ATI TEAS Practice Questions.

Advice for Microbiology!?
I'm taking micro right now and it's not that bad. If you're good at memorization, then you should have no problem in getting an A. I study about a week in advance (from an exam) for about two hours each day and I currently have an A average. Also, take good notes! There's a lot of note-taking involved (at least for my class) and it gives me a hand-ache. Go! You can do it! :)

Teas test
I also used the Mometrix study guide and used quizlet for the science section. There's also a couple of free TEAS practice tests online such as Union Test Prep (Free Test Prep for the TEAS) & Teas Practice Test (TEAS Practice Test | Free ATI TEAS Practice Questions). I'm sure there are other free practice tests available online. Good luck!

How many semesters did you apply to nursing school before being accepted?
I only applied to my local community college's program (ADN) and got in with a 4.0 GPA & 80 on the TEAS. *EDIT: As to how many semesters, it took me two semesters to finish my pre-reqs.

How old is everyone?

Bergen Community College Nursing Program 2017
Look to see if there's a "lecture/lab" next to the professor's name. That's going to be your "main" teacher for the 183 class.

Bergen Community College Nursing Program 2017
I'm in section 002, and I heard that the prof is very tough.

Does anyone know if we can switch sections? I have a feeling that we have to stick with the section that we're in.

ATI TEAS 6 Advice and Recommendations!
I took the TEAS VI in March, and there were no short essays. All questions are multiple choice.
-
TEAS PRACTICE EXAMS
Try quizlet, google certain concepts/topics that you're unsure about and do practice worksheets, and review your ATI study guide again. You should be fine. Good luck!

Trouble with sciences...
When I was in high school, science was my WORST subject. I got a C in chem and I failed a lot of my bio exams but now science is one of my stronger subjects. You have to force yourself to study and you'll gradually get used to it. I'm taking all of those classes you mentioned: A&P II, microbio, and chem. It's not that bad. It's just memorization for A&P and microbio. With chem, you just need to understand concepts and how to solve math problems. Good luck!

Anxiously waiting for the acceptance bus
I felt that way at first. What if I don't get in? Then what? But then I started thinking, 'I have to get in, ' which eventually turned into, 'I WILL get in.' I guess I was just hoping for the best and I later found out that I was accepted into my local cc's program. *To anyone reading this: You'll be fine. Just relax.

Spring 2017 Chat
I'm currently taking Intro to Chem, A&P II, and Microbio. I just got accepted into my local cc's program for the fall. I'm saving up for a collectible item I wanted for YEARS. I made a promise to myself that if I got into a nursing program, then I'll buy myself that item. This kept me motivated and now I'm looking forward to my treat! *_*

Math skills needed for an intro to chem course?
Yes, just go over your basic algebra skills. Also, it may be different for some profs, but my prof explains how to do each problem step by step and explains why the problem is set up that way. Up to algebra 2, you should be fine. This depends on you. When you did take any math class, like algebra, in the past, did you struggle with the concepts? If so, then you'll probably need to take an algebra class. If not, then you're good. I'm actually in intro to chem right now and about a good half of it is math-related. But it's pretty simple algebra (setting up conversion factors, plugging values into a formula, etc).
