I was reading the nursing theory book and works of Peplau on nursing theory. Then I read Has Anybody Seen My Old Friend Peplau? The Absence of Interpersonal Curricula in Programs of Nursing (Jones, 2012). It made me burst into laughter and upset at the same time. Surely all these are great ideas on how nurses are supposed to "fix and rehab patients in a 2 day visit"

Who are all these people sitting in their high thrones and telling what needs to be done. It seems as if all of them are on drugs and have a complete disconnect with reality.

Let's face it patients are lazy. They do not care. They are on disability, benefits-whatever. Who are these delirious nursing theorists and educators that want us to completely shake a person's world and change them? I mean common now the society does not care about what will happen to patients, while the hospital is just greedy waiting for a fat medicare reimbursement. The patients have no incentive to get out and do the right things. Cuz work is dog, organic whole foods is for trump and the society has no genuine interest in anyone's well being and future.

yes, if a patient wants my advice on how to control blood sugar I will give it to him. But i highly doubt that he/she is interested

So who cares anyways

Ditto. I don't get the poll.

Watch the stereotyping. Patients on disability/Medicaid etc. are NOT all lazy, and they will sense your contempt for them. As for "who cares", as a future nurse you *should* care. I don't mean you have to coddle people, but you should at least have some compassion. If you can't manage that, then perhaps nursing is not the right field for you.

Oh. ok sure. I have been a nurse for 10 years and have seen plenty. May indeed be a generalization but describes the bulk of interactions and patient clientelle. Patients are immature and incapable of making responsible decisions. Surely, an invalid AKA is more limited? than a regular person. but i have seen ones that work out in the gym? or one that participates in Olympics and then we go Ahhhh! when in reality he is doing so because he has got motivation?

If you can fix the unfixable may be you wish to share your expertise?

This post addresses the inappropriate use of nursing theory in most instances. because we as a society are supposed to provide a continuum of network and benefits for patients that have chronicity. It is my belief that these same patients should actively participate and pull the share of wanting to stay healthy on top of moral obligation to contributing to society in one way or another . Nurses are not respected because health care is a business and patients feel as entitled customers

speaking from a personal perspective m'am I have had enough compassion to provide uncompromising care to an insured that murdered his whole family and not going to list amount of toddlers( for HIPPA violation)

I thought to myself: ''Gee, how do I deal with this without going crazy .I felt that there are homeless people on the street, ill children of single mothers and the disabled that also deserve care but cannot afford it. finally had a self-reflection that this patient also is a child of God and God didn't intend him to be that way when he was born. Something sad must have happened to him in his life. And surely, there should be good things left in him - they just did not have time to come out??. That is how I dealt with it personally.

Changed my mind.

Changed my mind.

Same here, but cancelled before posting. Decided it wasn't worth it.

I don't understand??? Is the poll about adding another worthless theory class or nurses not liking their patients so much???

What I remember about old Hildegard is her theory of "therapeutic use of self". Those 4 words.

As a Psych NP, those words do pop into my mind from time to time while I am working.

Otherwise, know it for the test, but don't take it too seriously.

I think it's about the writer's contempt for basically everyone who isn't him.
