Nursing pins

Hi there. We are finally going to graduate and have been given information about our nursing pins. We have been told that we have to get a certain kind from herff jones, inc/jh recognition company. We were notified of this info today at class. The cheapest pin in around $55 and can go up to $200. We were told that we had to have the order in by Friday (sooooo much time to come up with the cash, but that's just another vent...).

I was curious as to how much others had to pay for their pins. It's not a problem for me. I actually think I will go with the Gold filled yellow for $75. (I also knew that I'd have to buy this from a previous student telling me.) Just curious b/c there is other students in my class upset at the cost.

Also, for my own info, we are offered pin guards. I was thinking of getting the RN guard. Anyone else get one of these??

I paid $75.00 for gold filled. It is identical to the gold. I do have it on my badge. It is kind of cool when other nurses see it and know where it is from. As far as a pin guard I have no idea what that is. I guess I don't have one. Congrats on graduating!

I did the 55$ Sterling silver - I'm not a gold kind of gal, and it's just beautiful.

Pin Guard: Little chain thing with an additional pin so that if your nursing pin were to come loose - less chance of losing it. And what you stated for costs is EXACTLY what ours was. We weren't forced to get one though - if we did not want one, the school had 'extras' that they used for the pinning ceremony, then the students had to return them.

I don't remember how much I paid but definitely get a pin guard. Ours is the Lamp.

Sader, a guard is a little pin on a chain attached to the main pin. The idea is that if the pin falls off, the guard keeps it attached. Go to this site. Scroll down till you see "A Momento for MSN Graduates". There is a pic of a pin with a guard there.

Definitely get a pin guard!!! I lost my pin one time and had to reorder (ouch) CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! :balloons:

Thanks everyone. From your posts, I've made up my mind on the pin guard - I'm getting it.

Tigger - I wish I was as crazy about the silver as you are - I am the opposite, I absolutely love gold. Of coorifice I cannot afford the $200 pin that is 10K so I'm settling for other one.

We're not "forced" to buy a pin, but we are "forced" as to which pin to buy and whom from if we buy one. We have been told we can borrow a pin from a past graduate if we would like to.

I can't believe I'm gonna graduate!!!!!! Yeeeehoooooo!!!

I might not have bought one but my mother would have killed me if I didn't.

I think it's unfortunate that the history of our profession is not taught. Your nursing pin identifies your school, and is a badge of honor. Our caps also used to identify our school, but that has fallen away. When I went back for my BSN, I was dismayed to find that we didn't wear whites for pinning, just street clothes. I wear my school pins, as well as pins for my certifications.

our silver one looked so much better than the gold one!!

I didn't get the pin guard that said RN BSN on it because it already said BSN on the pin... I dont wanna be so full of myself to have to mention it twice

Your post prompted me to get out my nursing pin just to look at it, and I got a little teary-eyed.

At the time it was just a pin to me, but looking at it now reminds me of all the hard work that went into accomplishing that goal.

PS: I think I paid $60 for mine, maybe? 10K GF.
