nurses from the Philippines: how are they in general?

There are a multitude of threads on this BB dealing with this issue.

It really comes down to the nurse....just as it does with American nurses, Indian nurses, British nurses, Christian nurses, Muslim nurses, etc.

Some nurses are good and some are not so good...it depends on the individual.

Having said that, many of the nurse from the Phillipines that came over in the 80s -90s are excellent (these are the ones with which I have most experience) However, increasingly the economy of that area is such that nurses are almost an "export" and many less than stellar programs have come up, as well as clinical and job opportunities are limited so that those coming over now may have limited experience.

The other issue is that with retrogression, very few are coming in. And due to limited opportunities for paid employment in their home country, and an extended wait before coming to the USA, one has to wonder how they keep up skills.

Due to the USA economy, it is doubtful if that will change any time soon.

I like to know if you guys do have a Filipino colleague in the nursing service.

There is a great percentage of BSN graduates from the Philippines who really target on working abroad particularly in US and UK.

I like to know how they are as co-workers and as nurses to their clients.

Any good/bad experience with them?

Do you like them? why and why not?

Your question is just like asking: How are US nurses in general or how are French nurses in general? It's hard to generalize any one group of people...in addition, it can be quite offensive to generalize any one group of people.

People are individuals. Like any group, you'll find ones who are excellent and hard-working and others who do just enough to get by.

I just couldn't help but raise a brow when a keynote speaker specifically mentioned that nurses from Philippines are MORE caring and compassionate compared to other nurses from other countries due to their culture, based from a collective client feedback from random hospitals in the US.

I like to think that every nurse has a unique way of showing compassion and care. Each nurse is different, but all is worthy of admiration and honor.

They are EXCELLENT. They are excellent at clinical skills, and have, as a collective group, great empathy for patients. They are very, very respectful.

However,

They need to learn assertiveness. They are respectful to the point where they are afraid to contact MDs and are way too deferrent. There are times when speaking up as an advocate for the patient means one will get the doctor upset. It is the nature of the beast.

From my experience they are excellent and have no attitudes, they're really great to work with!

From my experience, without trying to generalize, the men are a bit more sensitive, and the women more procedure oriented. My boss told me some of that comes from the cultural norms of the father's being softer and more the caretaker in the family and the women being more work and duty oriented. However I am not very familiar.

I recently got the pleasure of training one of my new colleagues a A BSN nurse from the Philippines who has been wonderful to work with. I have found her to be one of the most careful nurses on the floor and am really excited to get to work with her. She pays great attention to detail and is looking to improve upon what she already knows. I feel very blessed to have her.

I have to admit I was a little surprised when this new nurse showed incredible delegation and managing skills. She has experience from a previous profession but it is so nice to have a new nurse who is not afraid to be a little more assertive when it is needed.

This is what I have been observing so far: Filipino nurses from the float pool are not lazy as other nurses from the float pool. They actually answer the call light and even ask if YOU need help.
