We are one of the biggest voices in healthcare but yet we cannot all be together on one accord and this is a very sad situation. I have witness and been a victim in this sad charade throughout my 5yrs as an LPN. I have seen nurses leave this field simply because of the treatment they receive from their fellow nurses despite the drama of everyday life from physicians, family, patients, etc...I am once again in nursing school RN/BSN and I am praying that a change will be reached in our profession. Please feel free to share your experience....

There are scores of threads on this subject; I can point you to many.
Meantime, respect is a two-way street. The young eat the old, old eat the young, strong the weak.
Anyone feeling "eaten" would benefit from assertiveness training and books. I can point you to those, too, if you want. Meantime, remember, you are no one's doormat, and give respect, if you want it in kind.
No one eats me; my shell is too tough, skin too rough, like a rhino. Not any fun to pick on me for anyone. Assertion (not aggression), is my skin.

Not a nurse but I would have to say that this is the same situation in every career not just in nursing.
In the corporate world it is the same. Your tongue is your best defense. If you feel like you are being abused or treated inferior then speak up and have your voice heard.
" A person will only get as far as you allow them too".
Respectfully, if you feel this way then do something about the situation and move on. No one deserves this kind of treatment. There will always be others trying to "eat whomever they can".
Just don't let it be you and don't do the same. IMO, go in do your job, treat everyone how you wish to be treated, and go home and on with your life.
I have been through this many times outside of nursing and believe me, I am not afraid to speak my mind and put anyone who wishes to mistreat me to shame.
Best wishes to you. :)

You can not be eaten unless you allow yourself to be eaten. Either you get tired and show your own fangs, or become burned out because people run all over you. Experienced nurses also have a "knack" for reading new nurses and have a tendency to form biased opinions upon brief, informal meetings. Nursing is a profession where you must constantly prove yourself; the drive is fueled by competition. You must have patience and roll with the punches!:) Good luck to you

I hesitated to click on this thread, fearing what I might find. But I am pleasantly surprised to find that I agree with the responses above. That put a smile on my face.

Dropping the phrase "nurses eat their young" would be a HUGE step.

Stop eating your young!!!
Kind of a self perpetuating phrase isn't it? I rather like BE KIND to each other.
