Nurses that “only do it for the money”

What is your thought on nurses who only join the profession for financial gains?

I don't think that's a word.

I think she meant complacent as I’m satisfied enough to not be interested in doing anything about changing it.

I’m of that older generation, but I would still like to see some changes....

Now get off my lawn....

You think? Congratulations. You want an award for catching a typo? Do you want me to frame it on your wall?

I would do anything else for money if I have a choice. When I'm at work I just want to be left alone as long as I do a good job.

I just couldn't figure out what you were trying to say. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I was a bit rough, I apologize. It’s hard to read tone over text and the way I approached your comment, well I read it sarcastically without needing to be read such way.

Thanks, dork. ?

Like other commenters say, as long as they do a good job, more power to them. "Only in it for the money" makes a lot of people seem callous when it's usually more complicated than that. Even people for whom it's just a job can show some caring, and that is usually all that's needed.

I genuinely like my work and it fulfills me, but I really could make more money doing something else. If you are in it just for the money or just to martyr yourself to a cause, you won't make it. Gotta strike a balance, as with most things in life.

I agree with you on the first part . Many people assume that nurse make big money . I guess everyone has their defintion of big money, but to me I think we are under paid .

I think this might be a factor of geography as well. I've read enough threads on here to know there are places where RNs are only making $20/hr. I would consider that seriously underpaid.

I started at $35/hr as a brand new nurse still on orientation. That's $65K to start for a job that requires a two-year degree. I think that's pretty good. With seniority, shift differentials, some overtime, and high clinical ladder scores, there are bedside nurses making over $100K. It's not Bill Gates territory, but it's comfortable.

If you chose nursing for the money? Then I have to wonder how you got through school (and life) without any knowledge of business or technology or consulting...

I became a nurse for the career, never been in hospital, never worked in hospital didn't even know if I'd like it. Thankfully I did and I'm good at it, just because someone signs up for this reasons doesn't mean they aren't capable of the compassion to be a nurse, quite frankly you aren't going to make much money if you don't have much passion as a nurse.

Well, to be honest you can, they just normally shunt you off to management especially if your face fits...

Heh.

I'm not even a nurse yet and I hear comments similar to this one often.

"Oh??? An RN?? It takes a special person to be an RN I am so proud of you!!"

Me: (Thinking) Ummm...well, I'm tired of driving a box truck and lifting a bunch of heavy crap and jacking up my shoulders and elbows, and delivering to people and I want to make more money, and nursing sounds like a decent way to make a living and so many options too, and I've always been a science dork and find the human body fascinating, so...[/run on sentence]

Me: (Outloud) Oh, yeah. Totally.

I think regardless of the reason, becoming a nurse does take a special person. We work hard and have a ton of responsibility, and let me tell you, nursing has giving me a comfortable lifestyle but the pay is never enough for the responsibility one has. Just my personal opinion.
