New: Transcript requirement?

Published

Hi,

We were told at my facility in PA that a "new policy" required a copy of our college transcript. I spoke to someone HR, and she said all employees must submit new copies of them. I have been searching the internet, but can't find any new JCAHO/Dept of Health requirements of this type. Anyone have any clue on this one?

Your help is appreciated!

Google long enough and you will find an answer! It is from the College of American Pathology! So much for reducing paperwork!

Cannot speak of such a requirement applied retroactively but here in NYC area at least many facilities have long required transcripts as part of the application process. This might be limited to new grads or system wide for all applicants to medical, nursing and other positions.

Only reasons one can come up with asking current employees to submit *new* copies of college transcripts is either previous versions were lost/destroyed, or large enough numbers weren't "correct" (directly from the office of the Registar bearing a seal) if not out right forgeries.

Sometimes it is easier for various reasons to issue a blanket requirement rather than sit several people down.

Thanks for your response, in looking into the matter a little further, it seems that the while our transcripts are in our HR folders, it would take to much man power to physically move them. So, instead, we are asked just to forward them. It's all very odd.

Only once did I have to submit (well, have my school submit) my transcript to an employer...that was in 2009. Haven't had to do it since.

When my employers required my college transcripts they had to request it from the college(s) themselves and pay the fee.

Has your facility recently been purchased or merged with another system or any other such action?

Given today's penny pinching by employers of all sorts it can be less work and expense on that end for employees to resubmit information rather than shift it themselves. If there are large numbers of nurse, physicians and or others covered by the transcript requirement why pay some soul to move say >500 transcripts when they can as *you* to do it instead. *LOL*

Just curious, why does the College of American Pathology require a copy of your college transcripts?

Edited to add: Googled this myself and found the requirement for transcripts, however this requirement can be exempted for waived testing. What point of care testing are you doing, as most of them can be waived.

This all sounds kinda weird if it applies to a longstanding nurse. Haven't heard of any new legislation or reg that is on point.

Perhaps Nurse Karen of this board has an answer.

Can the OP clarify the circumstances of the request? Is the OP a new, or relatively new, grad?

Thanks!

The College of American Pathologists reuires proof of adequate education be on file for all persons performing laboratory analysis. Most testing performed by nurses (POC glucose, urine dipstick, etc.) is waived from many of these requirements.

Thanks, Chare.

Yeah, I didn't think most nurses were encroaching on the work of pathologists.

Let's see if someone gets to the bottom of this req.

There was a similar thread a couple months ago...I answered that the answer I got was for verifying hours, completion of coursework for all professionals, along with the licensure-I believe they are following the trend of what NY has been doing for years, as another poster has stated. I never heard of the reason being based on the Board of Pathologists.

As a new grad, I had to produce my transcripts to my employer, and the reason was to verify coursework and hours completed.
