Discussion

Negativity?

Whats going on people?

I've been coming to this board for a while. There have always been debates and even some heated discussions (which can be stimulating and even productive). Lately I see far too much flaming and just plain meanness (that are neither pleasant to read or serve any good).

first post I click into, someone complaining about spelling???? wtf?? why do you care how someone else spells?

next post, people flaming because they think the thread violates HIPAA, again why do you care? I mean if you are concerned by it don't post info you aren't comfortable with but don't flame others.

next post I read, people blasting the poster because they are upset about the bosses pet. all the responses I saw were nit picking little points and passing up the real reason the person was upset.

Come on people, this is supposed to be fun. If we wanted stress or to be nit picked, preached to or flamed we could all just go to work where we at least get paid for stress. Ease up on each other. The people that come here are all our peers and yes sometimes we are going to disagree or even argue but flaming just to flame isn't cool.

Please don't try to say you are trying to educate or right a wrong because your not helping anyone. The only thing flames or corrections do are to gain a small stroke to your own ego at the expense of others. Not to mention the fact that it's just plain tired and old.

Please remember that the people on this board are just like you and you wouldn't like others to flame or correct you would you?

Well that was better.

"i've been coming to this board for a while. there have always been debates and even some heated discussions (which can be stimulating and even productive)."

agreed.

" lately i see far too much flaming and just plain meanness (that are neither pleasant to read or serve any good)."

after a period of time, you get the "feel" of how other posters respond/react and you either respond to the "negative"/"positive" or you keep moving.

i do believe one should type without fear of getting "cut-down" by those who do not share similar views.

in general, being honest and opinionated is totally different from being rude and insensitive.

And the truth is, I've never really completely understood the definition of "Flaming".

Some people use that term in reaction to debate.

I guess being rude would be a better word.

Thanks Steph. I appreciate the affirmation. We all need to be encouraged from time to time. All my best to you and yours.

Disagreeing with the views posted by another person or discussing opinions are great. I have taken part in allot of the debates on this board and see nothing wrong with people sharing ideas, debating or stating positions on certain issues. In fact I find that discussions like that help me better understand the subject and in some cases change my opinion.

However, what I see lately is that many people choose not to engage in those discussions but instead. Focus on some detail not to there liking and proceed to high jack a thread with comments about spelling or some minor point that is really irrelevant.

I didn't single anyone out and made a new thread instead of responding to anyones post, because I didn't want to do this.

As for the comment that this board isn't supposed to be fun, I guess that depends on your definition of fun. Maybe fun isn't the right word. What I mean is that this board doesn't serve any purpose other then recreational communication. I guess for some that recreation includes lambasting others on small details instead of sharing ideas or conversing or adding anything of substance to the discussion.

Sure you have a right to nit pick and I'm sure you will continue to do so but I don't think I'm alone when I say "it is boring and of interest only to the poster".

Dayray, I'm not going to say I'm not bothered by the negativity. You are absolutely right it is here, and perhaps has increased lately. But why feed the negativity with thoughts like come on people what's wrong with you!

While for the most part for me, this board "doesn't serve any purpose other then recreational communication", it also is for me a source of information. Several times lately I've had serious questions I've had answered that has helped me in my practice and educating "my" staff.

Also it can be a place to vent serious issues and anger.

But for the most part I come here for fun, it helps me wake up before work, it helps me wind down after work. I don't take it all that seriously.

Good point. I believe that I am responsible for "me" and that my example/actions do have influence on others from time to time. I believe in leadership by example and the golden rule. And since it is the season to reaffirm I also believe in Faith, Hope and Love. I also believe that we have a responsibility to help others less fortunate than ourselves and to "Right Wrongs" when we can.

Can I change the negativity of others? Some yes, some no. Do I believe that I have a responsibility to "brighten the world" as best I can? Absolutely.

Happy New Year!

I concur,hb...your other post sounds like the Fish philosophy and I try to conduct myself accordingly and as a charge nurse in LTC I feel that it someone's negative attitude is effecting the resident's quality of life and their co-workers then I have to do something about it...That said-I am "sweetness and light" and Miss Congenialty and Tact all darn day but when I clock out the real me comes out...Here I am-feel free to put me on your special list and ignore me....We have specialty areas and we even have a "We are Christian Nurses thread" so as not to offend anyone.....Do we need a "pats on the back only" area and a "Tell us what you really think" thread-each with it's own faq?Maybe when we poiost we should put a symbol in the title-maybe a thumbs up or thumbs down so everyone else knows if they should respond honestly or with trite messages of love and support?:rolleyes: Let's get a grip,people......take what you like here and leave the rest....

This board is a whole lot less negative than another nursing site:chair: Thumbs up to the hard-working moderators.

Absolutely. I've been to unmoderated boards before and it's a flame profane free for all. Don't like it a bit.

Just a general comment, but human nature is negative.

All you have to do is turn on TV to see that. Overall, crime is actually rare. But it's all over the TV because that's what people watch.

People also love to complain, all day long. Not just nurses, but everyone. Complain, Complain, Complain. People come here to vent.

If somebody says everything is great and wonderful, well, let's face it, that's kinda boring.

Negative = Conflict

Conflict = Drama

Drama = Entertainment.

Entertainment is all about conflict and drama. Message boards are just another form of entertainment.

(And, the relentless need to complain about one's circumstances, no matter how lucky they are.)

;)

Life isn't all fun. Nursing isn't all fun. Doesn't mean we shouldn't have fun, but I don't think this board is supposed to be fun, or supposed to be anything.

AMEN, consider the &itching to be therapeutic. Maybe someone disagrees with a statement and they may fly into them. What harm is really done with a good spirited debate. Doing so via this site may allow someone to virtually "vent" and get things off their chest. This site is what you want it to be...if you dont agree with the thread dont reply or participate...
