Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

So this sunday night will be my last night working for the hospital i've been at for the last 20 years because they decided (unbelievably) to eliminate all the LPN's. They think they can run the hospital on an all RN staff, mind you, there are already 43 RN positions unfilled throughout the hospital at this time, and our last day is Sept 30. I'm not really understanding how they're thinking.. but i do know that my heart is breaking and i can't think straight. Having to say good-bye to my friends that everyone that I have come to know so well over the last 29 years is the most gut wrenching thing I think I've ever been through

Specializes in Nephrology, Cardiology, ER, ICU.

I am so sorry for you. The hospital I worked at also eliminated all LPN positions but they did it by attrition, not actually firing.

Have you considered going back to school for your RN? I was an LPN and it only took three semesters to complete my ADN. This might be an option.

Yes, that is definitely an option, and something i've been planning on doing, actually started a couple years ago, when i ruptured a disc in my neck and had to have surgery.. recovered, was getting ready to go back again..lol.. and ruptured L4 and 5.. more surgery, so hopefully this time I'll be able to actually get it going.. going to use the unemployment and help my mother take care of my dad for a few months before I start somewhere new, and I really think I need the time away from all of it, this really knocked the wind out of me

Think of it as there loss, they will have to pay them more than LPN's for the same job done.

That sucks no doubt about it. I'm so sorry. They are loosing some valuable experience and resources and I doubt it's going to work well for them.

Specializes in cardiac/critical care/ informatics.

I am so sorry that this happened to you. That doesn't say much for the hospital. the hospital that i work for is no longer hiring any LPN's. But no plans to fire any, they are strongly encouraging them to go back to school.

What's so sad is that your experience can and would blow away any of the new graduate RN's that they will hire. Definitely their loss. In the city I live in we have 3 pretty large hospitals and they do not hire LPN's either, but what amazes me is when I look on their websites for openings, they have a very large # of RN openings. It makes you wonder how they can even run the hospitals being that short of RN's. Oh well, so I've heard this happens every so many years. All I know is if and when the hospitals do start hiring LPN's again, I won't be there. If I wasn't good enough when I graduated, then I won't be good enough when they want us back. (being sarcastic) I'm good enough but they've already burned their bridges with me, even if I get my RN. A nurse is a nurse and I don't appreciate a organization discriminating against me on a whim and periodically depending on how the wind blows. I'm so sorry that this happened to you, but I always try to believe when bad things happen, that they happen for a reason. With your experience you should have no problem getting a new job when your ready. And you'll get one at a place that wants a LPN.

I'm also so sorry they are doing this and wish you the best. Jules

I'm so sorry that they're eliminating your job.

Specializes in ob/gyn med /surg.

i am sorry about your job loss. i think it's crummy that they would fire you for being a LPN .. alot of hospitals are like that.. my hospital is nolonger hiring LPN's but is keeping the few we have until they quit then filling the LPN jobs w/ RN's. my dept manager said she will hire no more LPN's, which is a shame because we work short or use angency RN's. i hope you find another job you feel comfertable with and they treat you right, my prayers are with you.
