NCLEX application: Which states don't require Social Security number?

only thing really is read the forum and see what threads pop up requiring SSN or you check various BON websites out. Off top of my head Vermont and California no longer accept application without SSN. Some states will ask you to sign a waiver and they will not issue a license until in the US and have a SSN

Some states may also require that we provide them with our PH local license now.

All 51 state requires SSN (Social Security Number). Federal Gov't runs the SSN, therefore, if you plan to work in the US you need SSN. You need SSN in any kind of job like nursing, engineering, accounting, medicine, dentistry, law, pharmacy, marketing, etc.

SSN is also a form of identification. System is connected to DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) w/c is another ID (ie.driver's license). It is also connected to DHS (Dep't of Homeland Security) w/c is immigration. If you are caught by police or questioned by employer about your SSN and you cannot provide it, they suspect you already as an illegal immigrant. In Arizona they can arrest illegals & deport back to Philippines w/o documentation.

I know of one nurse who got promoted but the employer found that she does not have valid SSN, therefore, they fired her because that is considered fraud. Good thing she was not reported.

SSN is like SSS in the philippines. When you get a job, some portion of what you earn goes to Social security, medicare, etc... And when you retire like 65+ years old, you get a pension on a monthly basis provided you worked 10 years or longer.

By the way kabayan. You don't have a license yet because they would not issue you a license #. You are just considered an NCLEX passer. Therefore, you cannot endorse to any state because there is nothing to endorse.

Actually there are several states that will let you take the NCLEX without having a social security.

Now if you don't have a social you will not be able to work but you CAN take the NCLEX.

Every state is different so check with the Board of Nursing. Texas is one of the states I know you can take it in.

I'm sure there are more states I just didn't look. :)

Look at the BON website I am sure the information will be somewhere there. Just be aware it is a federal requirements and we may see more BON's moving in this direction of US SSN required before a license will be issued. This would cut down on nurses working illegally

Those entitled to a SSN in the US

--born in the US (citizen by birth)

--legal permanent resident of US (aka green card)

--naturalized citizen

--valid work visa for the US

A SSN will not be issued for the sole purpose to apply for a professional license.

Vermont & Illinois. I'm from the Philippines as well & never been in the US. I took the NCLEX-Illinois in 2012. If you are confuse in the whole process of applying for NCLEX, you can ask for the assitance of NEAC. :)
