moving to DFW Texas.

Published

Hey Guys and girls

I am finishing up a LPN program at Concorde in Colorado right now. I graduate next week and then take the NCLEX PN soon. I am going to move to the DFW area and was wondering what the pay was like around there. And if anyone had any advice on where to buy a home for about 150 to 170.000.00 with at least five acres in a decent neighborhood. I am looking at the northeast side 20 miles outside of dallas. Or would fort worth be better home and job wise? any help is appreciated.

I think it will be hard to find 5 acres very close to Dallas these days. Fort Worth might be a better choice. It is still possible to buy a few acres north of Fort Worth that aren't too far from a good hospital.

Your best bet is Fort Worth. Nothing is really to far of a drive in DFW!

If you wanted to drive a bit, there are still plenty of 5 acre areas all around Dallas too! Duncanville, Lancaster, Rockwall, Argyle, Flower Mound, Denton....

etc

Hey.........congrats and welcome to Texas ! You are going to have to move further out to get that kind of acreage AND a home for 150K. We have very low housing costs, but not that low, LOL !

Your best bet is to rent an apartment while you learn the ropes in your new job and spend your days off driving to the various areas and figuring out where you want to live.

hey I lived in Dallas for 7 years. Not a nurse as an accountant. I am now trying to get into nursing school. Here is my take on it.Dallas - Bad traffic, rude people, very snobby, everything is very dressed up if you go out.Ft Worth - Traffic isnt as bad, more western (and I dont mean backwoods/redneck) more laid back and always seemed friendlier to me. People not from there combine them together but they are very different towns with very different feels. I would NEVER live in Dallas again. However I do still like Ft. Worth. That is just me. :) Good Luck!!! And Eat some Tex Mex for me.

Thanks guys for all your help! I am thinking of starting off in LTC for about a year. Paying off student loans of course. Then looking at going for the RN. I am still curious about the pay in that area? Colorado is at $19.00 to $22.00 for LPN's in LTC here. Thanks again for the advice, looking to take a look see here next month.:uhoh3:

Hmmm I live in Dallas and I just dont see it that way. I have lived in Fort Worth too - I like both places. I suppose it depends on your outlook on life in general :)

I don't agree on this at all. I just hope the OP doesn't get the wrong impression of Dallas. I love the area north of Dallas. In Grayson County you can get the acreage and the house for the price you were looking for. Welcome to Texas.

Everything is a matter of opinion, I guess. I was born and raised in Texas and love it here. Personally, I live BETWEEN Dallas and Fort Worth because sometimes I want to get all gussied up and go to a fancy dinner and show and sometimes I want to relax and stroll around Sundance Square. IMO, Dallas is faster-paced and people do tend to be more concerned with money and appearances. In Fort Worth, there is still a small-town friendly feel, but with big city amenities -- wonderful museums, great zoo, plenty of arts and leisure activities. I've worked in downtown Dallas and downtown Fort Worth. Traffic is much worse in Dallas, but Fort Worth has its share of problems. So, I guess it just really depends on what the OP likes best.

I was born and raised in California and completed a Los Angeles-area LVN program in October 2005 before moving to Fort Worth. I like living here and the LVN pay is decent. I'm a new nurse who earns $18.50 hourly at a nursing home. My friend is a new nurse who earns $20.00 hourly at a nursing home in the Mid-Cities area of Tarrant County. My brand new 1,800 square foot house in a desirable part of town cost $104,000.

I shall add that Texas property taxes are expensive. I was paying $1,800 yearly in California. Now I pay $3,700 yearly in Texas.
