moving abroad

everyone on the uk thread seems to be thinking of moving abroad! Must admit the thought has crossed my mind, and I wonder how easy it would be!are we so bad in the uk though, makes me a wee bit sad that everyone seems so discontent(including me at times!!):uhoh21: could we provide more support for each other in issues that affect us in the UK?:uhoh3:just my "two pence worth!"

Like you I am saddened by the apparent discontent amongst nurses in this country. I have worked in both France and Australia and am currently in the process of migrating to the USA. I have always returned back to the UK and probably always will as, in my opinion, although there are problems here, its overall number 1 for me.

I think nurses work abroad for lots of reasons, not just to get away from the UK, but having that experience behind you is always going to be of benefit. If only we could be "world" nurses and bring back the best from every other country to our own. There are pluses and minuses to every healthcare system, no one country has it right. We just have to learn from each other I guess.

I don't think it's just the nursing that's made us decide to up & move. it's a lot more to do with the cost of living versus the wage in my pocket, the stealth taxes, the proposed added things like pay per mile & wheelie bin chips & the congestion charge were the final straw for us!

Actually I really like my current job but I have the family to think of & we just want out! I want to get a decent wage for the decent job I do & to get that I have to go abroad.

I totally agree I love my job to and all my collegues, I love the work and the patients I nurse. BUT wow the cost of living, petrol, house prices are crazy I can affort a shoe box here in usa I can affort a massive house for the same price I pay here and earn more, and agenda for change on top of it all Im worse off per month!!!

I live in Inverness a CITY and am sick of the goverment going on about people leaving their cars at home and using public transport. If I try to get the bus to work it takes me 3 buses, leaving the house at 5.30 am for an early shift and not getting to work till 7.20 MY SHIFT STARTS AT 7. Yup our goverment wants me to take the bus but there is not a bus to get me to work on time great I even read a goverment issued notice that came round work saying Public Sector workers should be setting a good example and using public transport erm I would like to!!!!

Not to mention the taxes and as a nurse I know this the shocking even negligent service we get from our nhs!!!

We didnt move to the US because I was unhappy with nursing in the uk we moved here because we wanted to live here. Nursing was simply the tool to enable us to emigrate. To be truthful I miss my job back home in the Uk I was one of the lucky ones who had a great job and I loved it.

I have no intention of moving abroad, and like Madwife love my job. Having said that I think that the NHS in Wales may be in a slightly better condition than in England. There are many problems with the NHS but I do remember that when I qualified (in 1990) there were job freezes and no jobs for students, I was unemployed for 3 months after qualifying but it did improve. It seems to be cyclical in the NHS so lets hope things begin to improve again soon.

We didnt move to the US because I was unhappy with nursing in the uk we moved here because we wanted to live here. Nursing was simply the tool to enable us to emigrate. To be truthful I miss my job back home in the Uk I was one of the lucky ones who had a great job and I loved it.

My sister has been trying to convince me to transfer to Oz for 3 yrs now. She said I won't be able to buy a house here in England (we live in Haywards heath- and property prices are so high!). The only reason I don't want to move is my job! Love it! I get a decent pay too! The staff I work with are the best and management would often bend over backwards for me if I need an emergency day off, AL, CL, SL etc... I literally make my own off duty/ on call schedule.

Unfortunately, my husband is not as lucky. He works in A+E and they are planning to down grade his department w/c meant that he might get redundant and have to look for another nursing job... That would have been easy if there are jobs available!

We were looking for a house to buy for the past 3 mos and everything that we like, we simply can't afford. And now with my husband's job at risk, we don't want to commit to buy at all!

Hence the decision to finally listen to my dear sister's advise.

Hello Tanvi Tusti,

I wanted to ask you about your experience of having worked in France. I am a UK Adult RGN who is currently volunteering in the Dominincan Republic. My contract finishes this year and I plan to move to France with my french husband. I will commence a 4 month intensive french course and hope to work as a nurse afterwards. What is the current situation for UK nurses who wish to work in France? What are the steps to applying to hospitals? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

i am one of the nurses who made the move from scotland to the usa, we chose to do something different and wanted to come to the states as we had always liked it here when we came on holiday and we didnt have to learn a new language to come.

i would love to see more uk nurses post here to keep us up to date with whats going on back home, even non-nursing news, as its hard to come by over here.
